Description The set up helps in understanding conversion of mechanical motion to pressure signal. It consists of flapper - nozzle mechanism, Dial gauge indicator, pressure gauges and air filter regulator. A regulated supply of pressure, usually over 20 psig, provides a source of air through the restriction. The nozzle is open at the end where the gap exists between the nozzle and flapper, and air escapes in this region. Installation Commissioning Unpack the box and place the set up on support table. Puncture the rubber caps on the top of pressure gauges with pin or needle. Connect air supply line to the air regulator. Provide oil and moisture free instrument quality compressed air with minimum 2 bar pressure. Fit dial gauge indicator on flapper support. Before tightening the locking screw provided on the back side of flapper support ensure that the dial gauge is pushed down by about 20 µm. Unlock the air filter regulator by pulling up the red ring on the knob and open it by rotating the knob counter clockwise. Adjust the air supply pressure to 20 psig by closing the air regulator. Change the gap between flapper and nozzle by gap adjusting screw and observe variation in signal pressure. Set up is now ready for conducting experiments. Troubleshooting Note: For component specific problems refer components manual Problems Possible causes / remedies No signal pressure or Clogged restrictor hole. Clean it. low signal pressure Signal pressure is Clogged nozzle hole. Clean it. high and nonresponsive to nozzle gap Low signal pressure Bent or misaligned flapper with the nozzle. Experiments To study characteristics of flapper nozzle system. Adjust the air supply to 20 psig by air regulator. Increase the gap between flapper and nozzle to get 3 psi signal pressure and note the dial reading. Decrease the gap between flapper and nozzle by gap adjusting screw. Note the dial gauge reading for each psi change in signal pressure. Ensure that supply pressure is maintained at 20 psi. Repeat the set of observation by increasing the gap. Tabulate the readings in the observation table and plot the graph of signal pressure verses nozzle gap. Refer MS Excel program for graph plotting.
