Troubling Concerns In 2014, 24% of officers killed were not wearing body armor Down from 34% in 2013 In 2014, 38% of officers killed in auto crashes were not wearing seatbelts Down from 57% in 2013 In 2014, 53% of fatal auto crashes were single vehicle crashes Roughly the same as 2013 (54%) Number of officers shot and killed in ambush attacks in 2014 (15) was three times the number from 2013 (5) 14

Some Good News Since the 1970s, number of officer fatalities has steadily declined averaged about 230 officer deaths each year in 1970s, compared to about 146 over last 10 years (37% decline) Decline occurred as number of officers more than doubled The number of officer fatalities in 2013 (107) and 2014 (117) were the lowest in more than 50 years 15

Seat Belt Usage There were 86 fatal automotive traffic crashes involving law enforcement officers between 2012-2014 47% of the officers in those crashes were not wearing seat belts NOT Belted Belted 20

Motorcycle Officer Fatality Trends 21

2010-2015 Police Motorcycle Crash Data From 2010 through the first half of 2015, there were 32 fatal traffic crashes involving police motorcycle officers: 25 involved collisions with other vehicles 5 were single motorcycle crashes 2 were single ATV crashes 22

Key Finding in Analysis of Police Motorcycle Crashes 10 of the 32 fatal crashes occurred while the officers were engaged in escort activity, accounting for almost one third of all fatal police motorcycle crashes. 4 Funeral escort 3 Dignitary protection/vip escort 3 Parades or bicycle ride escort 23

Fatal Crashes Involving a Failure to Move Over and Slow Down 27

Move Over Crash Data From 2010 through the first half of 2015, there were 21 fatal traffic crashes involving drivers failing to Move Over and Slow Down : 9 of the collisions involved State Police or Highway Patrol officers 9 involved municipal agencies 3 involved Sheriff s Offices 28

Move Over Crash Data 10 of the 21 fatal crashes involved an impaired driver. 7 crashes occurred while officers were on the scene of an existing crash. 7 crashes occurred while officers were conducting traffic enforcement stops. 3 crashes occurred as officers were conducting a DUI investigation on another motorist The other crashes occurred as officers assisted disabled motorists or were directing traffic. 29
