Highlights include: Salt Lake City, Topaz, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Heart Mountain, Battle of Little Big Horn, Devil s Tower, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Day one - Monday, June 10, 2019 - fly to Salt Lake City, Utah - visit Topaz Relocation Center Our wonderful western adventure begins with a short flight to Salt Lake City where we will board our motor coach for a ride (about 2 hours) to the town of Delta where we will visit the Topaz Relocation Centre where over 11,000 Japanese Americans were interned during World War II. We will also visit the brand new museum dedicated to the story of the Japanese American internment which is lovingly maintained by volunteers from the town of Delta. Later today we ll return to the Salt Lake City area where we will overnight. (D) Day two - Tuesday, June 11 - Salt Lake City s Temple Square, travel to Afton, Wyoming A fascinating morning of sightseeing will include a visit to Temple Square and the Mormon Family Search Center where genealogy is studied today. This afternoon, after a bit of free time to explore Salt Lake City, we ll travel northward into Idaho where we will visit the National Oregon Trail Center. Our day will end in the town of Afton where we will overnight (B, L, D) Day three - Wednesday, June 12 - Grand Tetons & Yellowstone - overnight West Yellowstone, Montana A beautiful day of sightseeing begins as we travel northward into the incredibly scenic Grand Teton National Park. This 2,219,766 acre park contains almost 300 geysers and over 10,000 hot springs, fumaroles and mud pots. Look for moose, elk, bison, bears and wolves. You will visit a few of the Park s major attractions including Old Faithful Geyser which shoots thousands of gallons of steaming water into the air. Later today we ll arrive in the village of West Yellowstone, Montana where a nice dinner and a comfortable hotel await. (B, D) Day four - Thursday, June 13 - Yellowstone to Heart Mountain Relocation Center - Cody, Wyoming Rise and Shine! This morning we ll travel through Yellowstone National Park, our route will wind it s way back into Wyoming to the Heart Mountain Relocation Centre where 13,997 Japanese Americans were interned during World War II. We ll be hosted by the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation, a nonprofit organization which runs the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, a museum that includes photographs, artifacts, oral histories and interactive exhibits about the wartime relocation of Japanese Americans, anti-asian prejudice in America and the factors leading to their enforced relocation and confinement. Tonight we ll enjoy a nice dinner in the nearby town of Cody, where we will overnight. (B, D) Day five - Friday, June 14 - Battle of Little Big Horn - overnight Gillette Wyoming A busy day of travel brings us into Montana s Big Sky Country where we will stop at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in the Crow Nation. Here, in 1876, in the Valley of Little Big Horn, combined Sioux and Northern Cheyenne forces led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse overwhelmed General Custer and his cavalry. Later today we ll cross back into Wyoming arriving at the town of Gillette where dinner and a comfortable hotel await. (B, Picnic Lunch, D) Day six - Saturday, June 15 - Devil s Tower, Mount Rushmore & Crazy Horse - Rapid City, South Dakota A busy day of sightseeing begins this morning as we visit Devil s Tower National Monument where you will be able to admire one of the country s most amazing geological formations - a 1267 foot rock that towers above the Belle Fourche River in Crook County Wyoming. Afterwards our route will take us into South Dakota and the Black Hills to visit Mount Rushmore National Monument where you will see the iconic faces of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln sculpted into the mountainside.
Afterwards, we ll visit a second colossal work in progress nearby, Crazy Horse, a memorial to the Sioux Lakota leader and a reminder of the importance of Native Americans to our history and culture. Our tour ends in Rapid City, South Dakota where you ll enjoy a farewell dinner. (B, Picnic Lunch, D). Day seven - Sunday, June 16 - return flights home Today, after an unforgettable journey, we ll transfer to Rapid City s airport for our return flights home. Minimal physical activity such as climbing some stairs, boarding your motorcoach, and walking from the hotel lobby area to your hotel rooms and dinning areas. What to Expect This is a leisurely tour. You ll travel vast distances by bus almost every day, making stops to visit important sites along the way. You will do only a moderate amount of walking each day, usually over level surfaces although at Heart Mountain, Topaz and a few of the national parks we will be visiting (where there is a limited amount of walking to do) you may need to walk over short distances of gravel, dirt or uneven ground. Touring the countryside (which is the majority of the time on this tour) will consist of comfortable motor coach travel with occasional stops for rest-rooms and photos. Except for the main cities, this is a very leisurely tour. Guests must be able to carry their own baggage (and carry-ons) through airports on their own. While walkers and wheelchairs may be brought onto this tour, guests who require either must be accompanied by a relative or caretaker at all times. If you require a walker or a wheel chair, you will not be able to do every single activity on this tour as some are only accessible to persons who can walk well without assistance.
