The snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rises above a saucer of clouds and dominates every aspect of Amboseli. This park covers only 150 square miles but despite its small size and its fragile ecosystem it supports a wide range of mammals (well over 50 of the larger species) and birds (over 400 species). Arrive for lunch at your Lodge followed by an afternoon game viewing drive. Amboseli is best known for views of spectacular Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at some 19,341 feet. The park affords you the best opportunity to get close to the mighty elephant. You might also spot Cape buffalo, zebra, wild
dog, and others. Later as the sunsets, you will be transferred back to your camp for dinner and overnight. Overnight: Amboseli Serena Lodge Meal Plan: Full Board Day 2: Tsavo West National Park Begin your drive to Tsavo West National Park, at just over 8,000 square miles; Tsavo is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world. Because of its size the park was split into two, Tsavo West and Tsavo East, for easy administration. Located midway between Nairobi and the coast, the area boasts volcanic hills, four rivers, more than 60 major mammal species and 1,000 plant species. The northern part of Tsavo West is the most developed and has spectacular scenery with a rolling volcanic landscape carpeted in long grass and dense bush. Although the tall vegetation makes game spotting trickier than in some of the other parks, Tsavo West's bio-diversity is amazing. The landscape is a mixture of grassland and forest shrub vegetation. Thus driving and exploring the vegetation almost assures you close encounters with the following animals: lions, leopard, cheetah, zebras, giraffes, antelopes, kongoni, waterbuck, klipspringer, impala, gazelles, buffalos, and elephants. Apart from Tsavo s elephant population there are many lion some undoubtedly the descendants of the infamous and feared Man-eaters of Tsavo popularized in the film Ghost in the Darkness. In addition to lion the resident carnivores in Tsavo include serval, hyena, leopard, cheetah, and caracal. The landscape is dominated, especially off the hills, by the giant baobab, a tree that is reputed to live 1,000 years. Tsavo West is famous for the Mzima Springs. This star attraction is a pool of natural spring water with underwater viewing hides for observing hippos where a gushing supply of fresh, crystal clear water has created an oasis for wildlife. A specially constructed underwater observatory provides visitors with a unique view into the underwater world of Mzima. The water catchment is divided into two pools; here you can view hippos and crocodiles. The upper pool is occupied by hippos and lower pool by crocodiles. Overnight: Kilaguni Serena Lodge Meal Plan: Full Board
Day 3: Tsavo East National Park Drive south to the expansive Tsavo East National Park. You will arrive in time for lunch at the Lodge followed by afternoon game viewing drive. The joint mass of Tsavo West and East National Parks forms one of the largest National Parks in the world and covers a massive 40% of Kenya s total land area. Tsavo East, the larger of the two offers a vast and untapped arena of arid bush land which is washed by the azure and emerald meanderings of the Galana river, guarded by the limitless lava reaches of the Yatta plateau and patrolled by some of the largest elephants herds in Kenya Tsavo East has a wide range of wildlife. Mammals species include: lions, leopard, cheetah, zebras, giraffes, serval, antelopes, kongoni, lesser kudu, Oryx, klipspringer, impala, stripped hyena, water buck, kudu, gerenuk, hunters hartebeest, gazelles, buffalos, black rhinos, and elephants. Crocodiles occupy the riverbanks. Tsavo East is also a bird watchers' paradise with some 500 species recorded including the ostrich, kestrels, buzzards, African skimmers, goshawks, red and yellow bishops, palm nut vultures and the white-headed buffalo weavers.
