Welcome to the first Wiggle Portsmouth triathlon a partnership event by Wiggle, Portsmouth City Council and Triathlon England. With a spectacular course starting at Southsea Castle taking in the Solent, Historic Dockyard and HM Naval Base this will be an exciting and iconic triathlon event. The cycling route is on fully closed roads through the city the Olympic and relay races will take in historic landmarks such as HMS Victory through to the Spinnaker Tower, before entering the HM Naval Base - an area not normally open to the public - and heading back for five loops of the seafront. Transition, registration and the race village will all be located on Castle Field (PO5 3NT) in front of Henry VIII s historic Southsea Castle. EVENT TIMING - Saturday Olympic: Swim - 1500m Bike - 40km Run - 10km 2pm - Registration Opens at Castle Fields. 8pm Registration Closes. EVENT TIMING - Sunday Sprint: Swim - 750m Bike - 20k Run - 5k Relay: Swim - 1500m Bike - 40km Run - 10km 5.30am Race Village opens. 6am Race roads close to traffic. 6am Competitor access to transition. 7am Olympic and Relay waves start. 9am Sprint waves start. 12.45pm Prize giving begins. 1pm Race road reopen to traffic. 2pm Transition closes, please remove all bikes from transition by this time. 2.30pm Race Village closes. REGISTRATION: Registration will open on Saturday from 2pm - 8pm and will offer secure overnight racking. This will be quicker than registering on the day and will be one less thing to do in the morning! There will be NO registration on Sunday, unless by prior arrangement. Please bring along a print out of your order confirmation and any relevant documents such as triathlon membership or photo ID, such as a driving licence. No ID, no race. If you have entered as a British Triathlon member but do not have your BT licence on the day of the race, you must pay an additional 5 at the Wiggle trailer for a race day licence before you will be able to register. You will be handed your race pack: chip timing anklet, 2 race numbers, three labels (one for your bike, helmet and any left luggage) and swim hat, when registered. Please attach the relevant numbers in the correct place i.e. bike label around the cables at the front of your bike, helmet label on the front of your helmet and luggage label on any bagged items which can be left at the registration marquee. Safety pins and pens will be available in the registration marquee and in transition from marshals.

Please complete the medical form on the back of your race numbers which can be pinned to your top (front and back), or you can use just one number on a race belt (which we recommend!) but remember to have it on your back, on the bike and in front of you on the run so we can identify you when you approach the finish line. If you use only one of the race numbers on a race belt, please remember to put your spare race number somewhere secure or hand it back to the registration team to dispose of. This, together with your numbered chip timing anklet is your passport into transition and left luggage. Race briefings will be held every half hour on Saturday from 2pm until 7.30pm. Full information will be available at registration and on race day before your swim. Relay teams Each member of the relay team completes one of the disciplines in the triathlon. At registration you will be given one ankle band per team which you have to pass onto each member between disciplines in the transition area. Further details will be in the race briefing. Electronic Timing by DB Max Multisport Events & Precision Timing Providing fast and accurate results is a critical part of the race. Each athlete is given a timing chip. These triathlon chips are re-usable and need to be handed back at the finish of the race. You will incur a charge of 50 if you fail to hand it in at the end of the race. Provisional results will be available on a print out on the day and from the event website in the following week. TRANSITION: The transition area will be left of Castle Field. The transition area will have high fencing and be patrolled by security at all times. To get into or out of the transition area you must show your race number at ALL times. You will also be asked to show both your race number & bike number when taking your bike out. This is for your security. Racking will be numbered and marshals will direct you to your racking location. Please ensure you arrive at least 60 minutes before your wave start time to set out your transition area and get to the swim start area. You will receive full information in the briefing on Saturday of where you need to report for the swim start. SWIM: The swim course is one 1500m lap course for the Olympic and relay races from Southsea beach. For the sprint distance, the course will be shortened to 750m. You will be given a race briefing before your swim wave start. Olympic and relay races will take place every ten minutes between 7am - 9am and sprint races from 9am to 10.30am. Your wave time will be sent to you in the week before the event. Waves will be arranged in age groups for each gender. The swim start will be in waist deep water. If you are a fast swimmer keep to the front, but if you are a slower swimmer keep to the back to avoid being swum over. Keep the buoys on your left as you swim round the course. The swim exit will be clearly marked by a banner. There will be rubber matting to protect your feet from the shingle beach. You will run to transition along the promenade into transition on Castle Field.

BIKE: An approved cycle helmet must be worn for the cycle section. This is a non-drafting race. Drafting is cycling closer than two bike lengths behind another cyclist to gain an advantage from wind protection. Please obey the rules of the road and keep to the left, unless race signage indicates otherwise. RUN: Finally, the run is on a 5km loop to Old Portsmouth and back. Two laps for the Olympic distance. The route will feature a water and feed station, with nutrition provided by High5. Your race number must be clearly visible at all times. The finish is in Castle Field where you will be awarded with your medal and goodie bag! PRIZE GIVING: There will be a presentation of trophies for overall winners, including Historic Dockyard family day pass for sprint distance competitors. Further prizes for Olympic distance and relay teams to be announced. These will be presented by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth at 12.45pm for the sprint race and 1pm for the relay and Olympic distance races. Facilities at the Race Village: There are toilets near registration and transition in Castle Fields. We are pleased to have a range of catering options available including Coffee Cup and other catering. For all your last minute purchases Wiggle s super trailer will be available selling Goggles through to bikes, all at 10% off website prices! A bike mechanic will be available for any last minute issues with gears, brakes or general safety requirements before you enter transition. Please note that they will only be able to tighten or tweak to make your cycle safe, they will not be able to do any major repairs on the day or assist with any mechanical issues which arise once you are out on the bike course. If you get a puncture while on the course, you are responsible for repairing it yourself. There will be fun for all the family at the race village, including face painting and a mini tennis court! Triathlon England will be available to answer all your race queries and general triathlon questions.

Remember to bring the below items with you! If you forget, or need new ones Wiggle will be retailing on the day, or if purchasing in advance offer free delivery at www.wiggle.co.uk : FAQ s AND EVENT RULES: Transition Rules: Swim: Goggles Wetsuit Triathlon suit or race wear Towel Cycle: Bicycle helmet Suitable cycling shoes Sunglasses Run: Running shoe Socks No use of mobile phones, personal stereos, MP3s, ipods or equivalent in transition or during the race at any time during the race. If you get into difficulty, turn on your back and raise one arm; a lifeguard will move in to assist you. In the event of stormy weather or if the water temperature is below 11 c, you will be informed one hour before the race start or as you enter transition to set up that the swim course has been cancelled and replaced by a short run section. Those doing the 1500m swim will run a 5k out and back course along the promenade towards Eastney past South Parade Pier and those doing the 750m swim will run a 2.5k out and back along the same route. Age restrictions: In line with British Triathlon rules, to be eligible to take part in this event competitors must be at least 15 years old on or before the 31st December 2013.

Penalties & Appeals: ALL penalties issued by the British triathlon race referee will be displayed on a penalty board at the entrance to the registration tent. Appeals against these penalties must be made in writing to the race referee within one hour of a penalty being notified and be accompanied by a fee of 15.00 refundable if the appeal is upheld. It is your responsibility to check this penalty board. Results: Provisional results will be available to download on the day from the registration website and on the event website in the week following. Print outs will also be available from DB Max immediately after the race. Finish: The finish gantry will be on Castle Field. After the finish you will be given your medal, a drink, a piece of fruit and a goodie bag. If you are in an early wave, please be mindful that others are still racing. Swimmers will still be entering transition across the promenade so if you are in the first swim waves, please bear this in mind. Showers and change facilities will be available at The Pyramids if you wish to freshen up and continue your day without going home. A small charge may apply. If you have a disability and require assistance in any way (such as racing with a guide), please contact us in advance by emailing events@wiggle.co.uk or events@portsmouthcc.gov.uk Race photography: Ian Burnett, local race photographer, will be taking photographs of all individuals on the bike and run route at iconic locations such as Old Portsmouth with the Spinnaker Tower behind, as well as general photographs of the race village, transition area and swim course. These photographs will be available to purchase from midweek after the race from www.ianburnettphotography.co.uk First-Aid and Medical Cover The safety of our competitors is paramount. During the event there will be a specialist event company qualified to provide event security, traffic marshals and first-aid support. There will be cycle responders from St John Ambulance plus an ambulance equipped to NHS standard.
