Welcome Welcome to the 2017 Teesdale Sprint Triathlon. We want this to be a fantastic experience for you and hope you enjoy every moment of the race, especially if you are new to the sport. We were very proud when this event was named 2016 Race of the Year by Triathlon England North-East, and we aim to deliver another fantastic day for you on Sunday September 24. The Event A 400m pool swim followed by a 28km, single-lap triangular road cycle, taking in a fast section through to Staindrop village on to a "good climb" to the outskirts of Egglestone village, then a fast finishing descent into Teesdale Leisure Centre, all on public roads. A multi-terrain, single-lap, 5km run follows in the area surrounding Teesdale Leisure Centre. This format will be fantastic for family and friends to cheer you on. The Venue Teesdale Leisure Centre Strathmore Road Barnard Castle County Durham DL12 8DS Parking There is free parking next to the centre in the local school car park and Glaxo car park. The school car park is accessible from the A688 and there is a footpath from the car park to the Leisure Centre. Glaxo car park is located on the B6278, approximately 150 metres past the leisure centre entrance. The Leisure Centre car park will be closed as this will be taken over by the transition area. All competitors are asked to respect the car parking areas, park sensibly, be aware of other car park users and leave it clean and tidy, as we could not run the race without the help of the school and Glaxo. The Glaxo car park has a 10 MPH limit and will also be in use by Glaxo employees at the time of the event. See the map at the back of this information pack for location details of both car parks. Please do not attempt to park at Teesdale Leisure Centre or the adjoining Social Club. Changing Facilities/Toilets The Sports Centre has ample changing/toilets/shower facilities. It is advised that you place your belongings in lockers as the changing facilities will be open to the public. The wetside changing rooms have municipal showers - so if you want a shower, please use the dry changing rooms. A full range of beverages and snacks will be available from our catering partners, the Barista Sisters, close to the finish area. A bike race number sticker will be provided and must be placed on your bike prior to entry into transition area. We recommend putting it on the rear brake cable casing where it is easily seen. Bikes must be racked in the numbered spot allocated. You will not be allowed into the transition area without your race number stickers properly affixed. Race numbers will be provided; a race number belt is recommended. If you are not using a race belt, then ensure the race number is visible from the back on the cycle route and from the front on the run section of the race. Detailed maps of all elements of the event including swim, bike and run routes will be available on the day on display at registration. Medical Conditions and Cover If you have any medical condition, please write this on the reverse of your race number as the paramedic team will check before any emergency treatment is performed. Please also write your emergency contact details on the reverse of the race number. We take medical cover very seriously and full medical cover will be available on-site, with paramedics ready to respond to any incident on the race route before, during and after the event. Please take care risks are simply not worth it for a few seconds. The Swim The 16-length swim takes place in the pool. Full safety cover is provided by the Centre s lifeguards. Start times and a map illustrating registration, changing rooms, entry and swim exit into transition will be posted at the registration area. Please take time to read them. Start time operates on descending swim time, based on your submitted swim time those who entered without a start time will be first off. Each competitor will be started at 1-minute intervals. Compression calf or arm guards are not allowed in the pool swim. You can, however, put them on in transition if you wish.!3
Competitors must be on pool-side to be allocated your lane 10 minutes before your allocated start time. Thirty seconds before you are due off, you will be asked to enter the water and stand in the corner avoiding obstructing any swimmer in the water. You will be given a 5-second countdown. Please remember good pool etiquette. If you wish to pass, tap the feet of swimmer in front and that swimmer (in front) should try to allow the faster swimmer behind an opportunity to pass, e.g. at the next turn. Upon completing the 400m swim, exit the pool at same end you entered, and move out of the pool area via the fire door to the transition area. MP3 players Please note that the wearing and use of MP3 players and other such devices is banned for safety reasons. We need you to be able to hear instructions from marshals. Failure to abide by their rule risks disqualification. Transition Area Transition opens at 07:00. This is a hard-surface area adjacent to the Leisure Centre as shown on the map. Transition operates a one-way system, so please see map displayed at registration. Only race wear and equipment required for the event must be placed in this area. Do not block the thoroughfare; items will be removed. Do not leave transition boxes and bags next to the bikes. Please either remove completely or leave them against transition fencing without blocking the route; items creating a safety hazard will be removed at your risk. No marking of the transition area is allowed and any marks found will be removed. There will be transition marshals and all race numbers must be shown to remove any kit from the area. Race numbers must be worn before exiting the transition. Race number belts are allowed. After the event, you will be able to retrieve your bike and equipment from transition using your race number as identification. You will not be allowed to remove your bike and equipment from the transition area unless you have your race number. The transition marshals will check. If you are entering or leaving transition while the race is in progress, please respect other competitors and give them time and space to continue their race. A bike and safety check will be carried out for every competitor before the event. A disciplinespecific bike is not required. All bikes and equipment must be in full working order. Handlebar ends must be plugged or taped. Two independent brakes should be fitted to all cycles. All tyre treads should be suited to the surface and conditions of which the race will take place. An approved helmet must be worn by all competitors. Do not duck under the cycle racking as this could gain you an advantage over other competitors and you will receive a time penalty. When leaving transition you must push your bike to the mount line before starting the cycle section of the race. PLEASE DO NOT DROP LITTER IN TRANSITION. T1 swim to bike: remember to fasten your helmet before removing bike from the racking. T2 bike to run: remember to rack bike before unfastening helmet and do not drop or throw equipment - you will be penalised.!4
The Bike Course The bike course is on open public roads, so all competitors must obey the Highway Code at all times. The course is fully marshalled and signed but make sure you familiarise yourself with the maps at regitration. Please note, when entering Staindrop there is a very sharp left hairpin turn. All competitors are advised to slow down when approaching this turn. The turn will be signposted and marshalled. After the 12-mile point there is another sharp left turn on to the Eggleston to Barnard Castle road. All competitors are advised to slow down when approaching this turn. The turn will be signposted and marshalled. When returning to transition for the run section, cyclists must dismount at the dismount line and push their bikes into transition Note drafting will not be tolerated. You must leave a distance of 10m between you and the bike in front, so as not to gain an advantage. When overtaking, you have 20 seconds to complete the manoeuvre. When you are overtaken by another cyclist, it is up to you to adjust your speed if necessary to maintain that 10-metre gap. Experienced marshals will be posted around the course and a motor-cycle marshal will be patrolling the course. A poster explaining about drafting will be on display in the registration hall. Please ensure your number is visible at all times.!5
! Cycle Route (above) The Run The run is one lap around the area surrounding the Leisure Centre (see map). The route is mostly off-road along farm and field tracks, with one section alongside a main road, and will be marshalled, taped off and signposted so there is no risk of going off course. It is the competitor s responsibility to follow the signs as marshals are there to guide you only. Please ensure that your race number is visible from the front.!6
