Feb. 12, 2017, at Drexel Drexel 76, UNCW 51 THE OPENING TIP UNCW completes its brief two-game weekend road swing on Sunday afternoon when the Seahawks travel to Philadelphia for a Colonial Athletic Association clash against Drexel. Opening tip-off between the Seahawks and the Dragons is slated for 2 p.m. inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center, which is the site of the 2018 CAA Championship. The game will be broadcast on CAA.tv and can be seen via the Seahawk Digital Network at UNCWSports.com/SDN. A LOOK BACK UNCW and Drexel had opposite results in their most recent outings earlier this week. The Seahawks, who are still aiming to secure their first CAA victory of the season, dropped a tough 72-71 decision at Towson on Friday night for their fifth consecutive defeat. Drexel, meanwhile, has been idle since Tuesday night when the Dragons outlasted William & Mary to earn a 65-58 victory inside Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg. The win was the Dragons fifth in the last six games. UNCW VS. DREXEL UNCW and Drexel face each other on Sunday for the 29th time in a series that dates back to the 2001-02 season when the Dragons joined the CAA along with Towson, Delaware and Hofstra. The Dragons hold a commanding 20-8 advantage over the Seahawks in the series and have won 11 straight contests. UNCW s last victory in the series came on Mar. 11, 2011, with a 63-51 triumph over Drexel in the CAA Tournament at Show Place Arena. Playing in Philadelphia has not been kind to the Seahawks, who have won just twice in 13 all-time visits to the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Their last victory in Philadelphia came on Feb. 28, 2010, with a 60-58 result. UNCW-TOWSON REWIND Senior guard Madison Raque and sophomore guard Lacey Suggs combined to score 50 points, but a free throw with three seconds remaining propelled Towson past UNCW for a 72-71 victory inside SECU Arena on Friday night. The Seahawks held a 71-69 lead on a pair of Raque free throws with 1:54 left in regulation before Towson redshirt senior guard Raine Bankston tied the game with a lay-up with 1:08 left. The Tigers took the lead for good with three seconds left when sophomore forward Nukiya Mayo sank one of two free throws for a 72-71 edge. Raque led the Seahawks with a career-high 29 points, including 16 in the second half, while Suggs posted her fifth 20-point game of the year with a 21-point effort. The last time UNCW had two players reach the 20-point mark in the same game was on Mar. 1, 2015, at the College of Charleston when Kelva Atkins (23) and Brie Mobley (20) led the Seahawks to a 76-65 win over the Cougars. UNCW boasts a 6-3 mark on its home floor while Drexel and Elon both boast perfect 6-0 records in home games. In nine home games this year, the Seahawks are averaging 68.9 points per contest and have reached the 70-point mark five times, including a season-high 89 points against NC Central on Dec. 3. UNCW is also shooting 40.9 percent from the field at home this season. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CHARITY UNCW connected on a season-high 81.8 percent (18-of-22) of its free throw attempts in Sunday s loss against Hofstra, including a 10-for-12 showing in the first half. Sophomore guard Lacey Suggs (5-for-5), sophomore guard Timber Tate (4-for-4) and redshirt senior forward Jenny DeGraaf (2-for-2) were all perfect at the line Sunday, combining to go 11-for-11. The Seahawks put together their best showing at the free throw line since making 13-of-15 tries at the charity stripe against Northeastern on Feb. 26, 2017. CLEANING THE GLASS The Seahawks posted a season-high 51 rebounds in last Friday s loss against Northeastern, marking the second straight game with 50 or more caroms. UNCW, which ranks fifth in the CAA with a 39.9 rebound average, also had 50 rebounds in its Dec. 31 setback against William & Mary. The loss against William & Mary marked the first time UNCW recorded at least 50 rebounds in a game since Feb. 22, 2015, at Towson. UNCW has fashioned at least 40 rebounds in six of the last eight contests after reaching that mark only once in the first eight games. The Seahawks registered 48 rebounds in Friday s loss against Towson, including 20 caroms on the offensive end. DIALING LONG DISTANCE UNCW begins Sunday s game against Drexel ranked third in the Colonial Athletic Association with 105 made three-point field goals in 16 games, an average of 6.4 makes per contest. Northeastern leads the 10-team conference with 142 made three-pointers in 16 games, which is good for an 8.9 average. Senior guard Madison Raque leads the Seahawks and ranks fifth in the CAA with 33 made three-point field goals while sophomore guard Timber Tate and redshirt senior forward are tied for eighth in the league with 28 made triples. SPREADING THE WEALTH The Seahawks have had multiple players score in double figures in 14-of-16 games this year after Lacey Suggs and Madison Raque each scored in double figures on Friday night at Towson. UNCW has had four players score 10 or more points three times this year - at Furman (Nov. 26), vs. NC Central (Dec. 3), and at Elon (Dec. 29). North Carolina had five players score in double figures en route to its 86-60 victory over the Seahawks on Nov. 22. The Seahawks have not had a game with five or more players score in double figures since Mar. 4, 2015, vs. Hofstra. Raque, a native of Louisville, Ky., did not start for the first time since Jan. 17, 2016, against the College of Charleston. NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN Coach Karen Barefoot is in her first season at UNCW after being named as the 11th coach in program history on May 3. Barefoot, a 1995 graduate of Christopher Newport, is one of three new head coaches in the CAA, joining Natasha Adair of Delaware and Towson s Diane Richardson. UNCW has new head coaches on the men s and women s side in the same season for the third time. C.B. McGrath was named as the new men s coach in April. UNCW is one of five Division I schools with a new men s and women s coach this year. NEW HEAD COACHES AT SAME SCHOOL School Men s Coach Women s Coach UNCW C.B. James Madison, which has claimed three of the last four league crowns, was picked as the preseason favorite. Elon, the defending CAA champion, was picked to finish second. Senior guard Madison Raque was an honorable mention selection on the Preseason All-CAA Team. WELCOME TO THE NEST A trio of student-athletes will join the Seahawks for the 2018-19 roster after being signed during the early signing period in November. Transfer Ahyiona Vason (Pensacola State) will join incoming high school standouts Jessica Mitchell and Zhaneia Thybulle on the roster next season. Vason, a 5-foot-4 guard from Montgomery, Ala., earned First- Team All-Conference honors as a freshman at Pensacola State after averaging 9.9 points and 4.7 assists per game. Mitchell is a 6-foot-1 forward who paced Linganore High School with 12.1 points per game last year. She also tied a school record with 41 blocked shots en route to First-Team All-County honors. Thybulle was an All-Nassau County Team selection and earned the A1 Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year award last year. ON THE HORIZON UNCW returns to the Port City on Friday evening to begin a two-game weekend homestand when Delaware visits Trask Coliseum for the first of two meetings against the Seahawks. Opening tip-off between the Seahawks and the Blue Hens is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Seahawk Digital Network and 95.9 The Ticket. Delaware leads the all-time series by a 25-8 margin and has defeated UNCW in four consecutive meetings.

PAIGE POWELL Forward 6-2 Freshman Hallsboro, N.C./East Columbus Coach Barefoot Says: Paige is going to be our secret weapon. She is going to be a tremendous player for us when she leaves this program. She can play inside or outside and is very gifted and athletic. I think she is going to be a nightmare for opponents to guard. Paige is a freshman, so it s going to take some time for her to understand what college basketball is all about. She fits well into our system both with the up-tempo offense and with our defense. Points 6, vs. N.C. Central (12/3/17) FGM 3, vs. N.C. Central (12/3/17) FGA 6, vs. N.C. LACEY SUGGS Guard 5-10 Sophomore White Lake, N.C./East Bladen Coach Barefoot Says: Lacey is someone that every coach wants on their team. I love coaching her. She can make a ton of mistakes, but it doesn t matter because she plays so hard. She gets on the floor, goes after rebounds and is always trying to be the first player down the floor on a sprint. She is super competitive and I love how she attacks the basket. We want to be an attacking team and she is someone who can help us do that. TIMBER TATE Guard 5-11 Sophomore Thomasville, N.C./Forest Trail Academy Coach Barefoot Says: Timber is someone who we are going on for scoring the basketball. We have had a lot of conversations and she is similar to GiGi Smith with a strong body. She has the ability to knock down the three-point shot and has the ability to attack the basket. She settles too much for the jump shot and that is something we are trying to work on with her. When she starts doing that, it s going to make our team better. She is going to be a player that is versatile for us. Points 20, vs. N.C. Central (12/3/17) FGM 7, vs. N.C. Central (12/3/17) FGA 15, at Coastal Carolina (11/18/17) 3-Pt FGM 6, vs. N.C. JENNY DEGRAAF Forward 6-1 Redshirt Senior Springboro, Ohio/Springboro (Penn State) Coach Barefoot Says: Jenny DeGraaf is going to be a coach someday. She is very comfortable on the floor and playing free and loose. She is so good at catching and shooting the basketball while also posting up against smaller guards. CHINYERE BELL Forward 6-0 Junior Fayetteville, N.C./South View (George Mason) Coach Barefoot Says: Chinyere is an incredible post player for us who has good strength and good feet. She also has good hands and a good basketball IQ. When you look at what she was able to do in high school, she started off as a point guard. As a post player, she has the ability to do it all. She will not make a lot of mistakes because she understands the game. She fits the system well because we want to go inside. She is working hard to be ready to play for us in December. REBEKAH BANKS Center 6-1 Senior Durham, N.C./Cary Academy Coach Barefoot Says: Rebekah is a strong rebounder and someone who understands that it s not always the first shot that s important, but it s the second or third shot and that is what will help us stay in games this year. She led the team in rebounding last year and I could easily see her averaging 10 rebounds per game and leading the CAA. One of her biggest strengths is setting screens and that will help our scorers get open. Her ability to rebound and screen is going to help us this year. GRACE SACCO Guard 5-5 Freshman Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City Coach Barefoot Says: Grace is as tough as nails. She is getting better every day and is someone you can trust to go out there and play a few minutes. She doesn t let anything rattle her and she is very tough. She came from a winning program that went to the state finals. Everyone on the team loves her and she is scrappy. She does the little things really well and that helps your team not miss a beat.
