World Volley F É D É R A T I O N I N T E R N A T I O N A L E DE VOLLEYBALL www.fivb.org Official Bulletin No. 39 May 2009 Edition in English News Website renewal brings new era for sport online Online improvements Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President In keeping with our commitment to continually improve our service to the Volleyball Family, which includes the media, fans, players and coaches, we recently introduced some exciting new changes to our website at www.fivb.org. The first stages of the complete overhaul were rolled out just prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and featured a stylish new homepage designed not only to be pleasing on the eye but more user-friendly and informative. I m convinced everyone who visits the site will find it not only more attractive to look at but also easier to navigate and extract information from. Our Press, IT and Marketing departments have been working tirelessly with the relevant directors at the FIVB to ensure the best possible product is delivered online and to strike a delicate balance between offering balanced but in-depth information along with entertaining articles and stories highlighting our commitment to the future of our game, especially at the grassroots level. In recent weeks we have added a dedicated SWATCH FIVB World Tour 2009 and World Championships site at www. swatchfivbworldtour.com, video tutorials from the Beijing Games, the Official Volleyball Rules 2009 Casebook, as well as all the latest Volleyball and Beach Volleyball news, up-to-date statistics, video and photos from around the globe. The site is still a work in progress, with many more improvements to come, including an online educational program for anti-doping that will incorporate the ADAMS open-resource database for athletes, coaches and officials to use to their own advantage. It is my firm belief that our improvements online will help attract renewed attention to our sport, while at the same time provide a greater level of service and enjoyment to all of you, our Volleyball Family. Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President The FIVB s newly designed website has been constantly improving since its launch ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics last summer. A working group led by Press Officer Fabrizio Rossini and comprising the heads of the Press, IT, Marketing and TV departments has been working to make the site as impressive and informative as possible for all visitors, regardless of what they arrive at www.fivb.org for. While the site has come a long way in the past few months, it is still very much a work in progress, with an extensive list of alterations forthcoming. High-resolution photos for media use are in the pipeline, as is an antidoping program intended to educate athletes and coaches on the perils of using banned substances. Thankfully, our sport has been blessed with very few infractions of this kind over the years, and it is our hope that our proactive and interactive online system will help to keep it that way. The most striking change to the site has been the shift to a more streamlined, modular look, designed to provide visitors with rapid access to events and the latest updates. For the first time in FIVB history, we have also added a link to a dedicated site: the SWATCH FIVB Beach Volleyball homepage at www.swatchfivbworldtour.com. The site incorporates the latest technology to provide a visually stunning, highly informative and user-friendly look at the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour, including live scores, player bios, interviews, game reports and other statistics. In an effort to better inform and educate athletes, coaches and officials, we also recently added a video section featuring clips of the world s best Volleyball players at the Beijing Olympics and the Official Volleyball Rules 2009 Casebook. The videos are intended to be of instructional use, with game highlights showcasing the best blocks, serves, sets and spikes. The Casebook is a compilation of plays and their official rulings, aimed at clearing up any misunderstandings on the meaning or interpretation of the guidelines. A selection of videos from the 2008 World League, the 2008 World Grand Prix and the 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour are also on the website, to be followed soon by video updates from the current tours. It is through improvements such as these, and many more to follow, that the FIVB hopes to grow the game internationally and make Volleyball a more interesting and accessible sport for everyone to enjoy. The newly designed SWATCH FIVB World Tour 2009 homepage was created to be visually appealing, informative and user-friendly In this Issue FIVB Editorial Website renewal brings new era for sport online Volleyball World League: Match of the Week Pope meets with 2010 World Championship organizers Early rounds of World Championships continue Beach Volleyball Brazilians off to flyer in Brasília opener Osaka, Seoul, Rome, Myslowice events upcoming on SWATCH Tour Technical & Development FIVB website showcases technical videos Argentine development Official Casebook online FIVB programme nominated for award Quick Sets News from Planet Earth

St. Lucia s men s team went undefeated in the first round, but had to work hard in their NORCECA-A group final game to get past the Dominican Republic and advance to the next stage. St. Lucia won the hardfought battle 25-22, 31-29, 25-19 to earn the right to play against Mexico, Haiti, Bahamas, Cayman Islands and hosts Jamaica from May 17-24 in the NORCECA-D group. Beach Volleyball MEN S & women S Brazilians off to flyer in SWATCH FIVB World Tour Brazil kicked off the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour in style in April, winning both the men s and women s events on the opening stop of the new season at the Banco do Brasil presents the KIA Open in Brasília. The Brazilian men put in a dominating performance in sweeping the medals, with third-seeded Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos winning gold after downing compatriots Alison Cerutti and Harley Marques 22-20, 21-19 in the final. Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes took the bronze with a 19-21, 21-19, 15-11 victory over top seeds and 2008 Beijing Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers of the United States. It was a world-best 70th international gold medal for the 36-year-old Emanuel, who has been competing on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour since 1994. Brasília, which is celebrating its 49th year as capital of Brazil, played host to the SWATCH tour for the first time It is great to be back on top of the podium, especially here in Brasília, said Emanuel. We had not played internationally since last year s Olympic games, so this win is very important in preparing for the world championships later this season in Norway. The SWATCH FIVB World Championships presented by ConocoPhillips is scheduled for June 25 to July 5 in Stavanger, Norway, with US$1 million up for grabs at the tournament. In the Kia Open s women s event, crowd favourites Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca won gold in their first international competition together since August 2008, when surgery on her injured right knee forced Juliana to miss the Beijing Olympics and endure a lengthy layoff. The fifth-seeded Brazilians won their 22nd SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal in their 36th appearance in a final by defeating Jen Kessy and April Ross of the United States in straight sets, 21-18, 21-18. Germany s Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig took home the bronze. The layoff apparently had very little effect on Juliana, who was named SWATCH most outstanding player at the tournament, a feat that fellow finalist Ross said was well deserved. The new Juliana looked like the old Juliana, Ross said. She appeared to be getting stronger as the tournament progressed. She displayed the same quickness and agility we are accustomed to seeing from her. She is back and will get stronger as the season progresses. While Brazil has hosted more SWATCH FIVB World Tour events than any other country 31 men s and 26 women s tournaments it was the first time the tour had stopped in Brasília. The double gender tournament offered US$380,000 in prize money and bonus pool. MEN S & women S Osaka, Seoul, Rome, Myslowice events upcoming on SWATCH tour Beach Volleyball Competition in the nascent 2009 SWATCH FIVB WORLD Tour heats up significantly in May, with single-gender US$190,000 events scheduled in Osaka and Seoul for the women and Rome and Myslowice, Poland, for the men. Osaka, which has already played host to more women s events than any other city, will welcome its 14th tournament since the inception of the women s FIVB circuit in 1992. Brazil are hot favorites to win the May 19-24 Keihan/Smfg Japan Open, having reigned supreme in each of the previous 10 stops in Osaka. Defending champions Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca are coming off victory at the Banco do Brasil presents the Kia Open in April, their first tournament playing together since August, when a knee injury forced Juliana to miss the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Juliana, who says she is getting stronger with every match this year, was named the SWATCH most outstanding player at the KIA Open. There will be scant little time for the women to catch their breath after Osaka, as two days later the World Tour picks up again at the Seoul Open in South Korea. The May 26-31 leg of the tour will mark the third consecutive year Seoul has The Keihan/SMFG Japan Open will take place in Osaka from May 19-24 hosted a SWATCH stop, with Chinese duo Chen Xue and Xi Zhang eager to defend their titles, albeit with different partners (Ying Zhang and Ying Huang, respectively). The men, meanwhile, will call Rome home from May 12-17 for the Foro Italico Open presented by Skipper. It will be the first time in 20 years the Italian capital will hold an international Beach Volleyball event, following 20 years of successful tournaments elsewhere in the Volleyball-mad country. Rome joins The Hague (Netherlands), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), and Brasilia (Brazil) as first-time hosts of SWATCH FIVB World Tour events this year. The Italians will fancy their chances on home sand, with no fewer than 18 homegrown teams signing up to participate (compared to 10 from Brazil). The men s tour will then make its way to Poland for the Myslowice Open 2009 from May 26-31. The men s stop in Myslowice follows the successful staging of a women s event in 2008 and the SWATCH FIVB Junior and Youth World Championships in 2006 and 2007, respectively.
