Description of the match: Second Leg of the clash between 2 big teams in a legendary stadium (Old Traford). The stadium was full of crowd creating a great atmosphere equal to a great match. The match was fair enough without many physical duels and without many protests. However there were several difficult situations for the team of officials. Manchester United scored 1-0 at 49 but Real Madrit managed to score twice (66 and 69 ) and qualify to the quarterfinals. 1

Referee I. Knowledge, Application and Interpretation of the Laws of the Game, Disciplinary Control and Technical Management of the game with special reference to the situations and the minutes when they occurred. (Crucial decisions, if available, have to be explicitly mentioned in the grid and highlighted). Cuneyt Cakir has become one of the most reliable and steady referee UEFA has produced over the last years. At this particular game he had a good application and interpretation of the LOTG in general. At the first half he had a very good approach by letting the game flow as much as possible. The first difficult situation he had to cope with was a foul he gave correctly to Ramos (REA) before Higuain scored (min. 33). After only 3 minutes he had a penalty appeal by Man. U. but he correctly waived play-on. The second half started in the same manner until min. 57 when Cakir sent off Nani (M.U.). After that red card most of the players became more agitated and especially United s players protested to Cakir in 2-3 occasions. Except the red card he had to deal with 2 penalties situations. The first one happened at min. 62 when Rafael (M.U.) while being in the goal line next to the goal-post blocked Higuain s (R.M.) header with his hand. Cakir was very difficult to detect the infringement (penalty and Red Card) but AAR 1 (Gocek) should have seen it. After 10 minutes there was another penalty appeal by M.U. when after an air pass by Van Persie (M.U.) next to the goal-line the ball hits Khedira s arm and goes to corner. Cakir gave only the corner because the hand was stuck to the defender s body and the defender did a move to pull his arm back. So correct no-penalty. Finally Cakir s only mistake happened at min. 92 when Evra (M.U.) tried to control the ball inside Real s penalty area and was brought down by Sergio Ramos (R.M.). This time there was a penalty which Cakir didn t detect it. His card management was good since most of the fouls were normal. Furthermore he had a correct management of the players especially at the Nani red card and in 2 other situations. 18 Evra (M.U.) fouls on Di Maria (R.M.) with a reckless tackle. Correct Yellow Card. 27 33 36 Cleverley (M.U.) fouls on Fábio Coentrão (R.M.). Cakir warns him verbally to calm down. Ramos (R.M.) fouls on R. Van Persie (M.U.) and after that Higuain (R.M.) scores. Cakir has already given the foul so the goal doesn t count. Correct. Evra (M.U.) collides inside the penalty area with S. Ramos (R.M.). United asks for a penalty but since there wasn t an infraction Cakir correctly waived play-on. 37 Arbeloa (R.M.) fouls on Evra (M.U.) with a reckless tackle. Correct Yellow Card. 55 57 62 71 abi Alonso (R.M.) and R. Van Persie (M.U.) have an altercation. Cakir goes to the spot and has a word with both players. Excellent management of the situation. Nani (R.M.) fouls on Arbeloa (R.M.). Cakir sents off United s player for serious foul play. United s player has his foot very high in the air in order to control the ball but hits Arbeloa. Even though Nani doesn t really have intention to hit Arbeloa spesifically he however endangers every players health or well being by raising his foot so high and at this spesific situations he hits Arbeloa at his ribs. After all this at least for me the red card is acceptable. Rafael (M.U.) while being in the goal line next to the goal-post blocked Higuain s (R.M.) header with his hand. Cakir was very difficult to detect the infringement (penalty and Red Card) but AAR 1 (Gocek) should have seen it. Penalty appeal by Man. United. After an air pass by Van Persie (M.U.) next to the goal-line the ball hits Khedira s arm and goes to corner. Cakir gave only the corner because the hand was stuck to the defender s body and the defender did a move to pull his arm back. So correct no-penalty. Furthermore Carrick is shown a yellow card for protesting. 73 Kaka (R.M.) fouls on Rafael (M.U.) with a reckless tackle. Correct Yellow Card. 75 Missed a foul on Evra right outside Real s penalty area when he is blocked by an 2

opponent before entering it. 87 Pepe is shown a yellow card but I can t understand the reason. 90+2 Sergio Ramos (R.M.) fouls on Evra (M.U.) inside the penalty area. This time Cakir had a clear view and should have seen the infringement. Penalty. II. Tactical approach and its Degree of Consistency, Personality, Match Control and Management of the Teams and Players with special reference to the situations and the minutes when they occurred. Control of the match was good. Cakir had a clear line in foul detection and all his decisions were respected by the players. He talked a lot to the players and he issued some verbal warnings when he felt needed. Positive Points 1. Control of the match. 2. Communication with the players. 3. Physical Condition Points to improve 1. Application of the LOTG III. Physical Shape, Stamina, Positioning, Movement as well as Mental Awareness, if needed, with reference to the minutes when they occurred, always in case of a -. Physical Condition (very good, good, average, poor): very good Further Aspects: Always close to play, follows play at all times with a flexible diagonal system and impedes interference with play Efficient positioning (at set pieces e.g.) and movement to be ready to take a (crucial) decision (specially in the box; be able to enter the box in some cases when it is necessary) Shows awareness and is able to anticipate the action IV. Teamwork (co-operation with (A)ARs and fourth official with reference, if needed, to special situations and the minutes when they occurred) Teamwork was good. Assistants helped Cakir in some situations but AAR 1 failed to inform him of Rafael s handball. 3

V. If needed: General comments or advices for improvement; explanation of the chosen mark; further matters (can be let empty). Overall it was a satisfactory performance with a small area of improvement but with 1 crucial mistake (missed penalty at 92 ). 4

Assistant Referee 1 them into a coherent comment or mentioning them in the grid below; mandatory if a - (negative Correct offside decisions by means of a good application of the wait and see -technique Reasonable degree of co-operation with referee (not flagging too much / too little; being able to support referee in crucial decisions) He had 4 offside calls and especially one of them was brilliant. Very good performance. 05 Van Persie is flagged for offside. Debatable since there is no replay. 09 Again Van Persie is flagged for offside. Correct. 15 Again Van Persie is flagged for offside. Correct. 20 Welbeck is flagged of offside. Ryan Giggs makes a header which hits the post and at the rebound Welbeck is offside. Brilliant call by AR1. 5

Assistant Referee 2 them into a coherent comment or mentioning them in the grid below; mandatory if a - (negative Correct offside decisions by means of a good application of the wait and see -technique Reasonable degree of co-operation with referee (not flagging too much / too little; being able to support referee in crucial decisions) The second assistant had a good co-operation with the referee. He had 1 correct offside call and other 2 onside calls but with 1 big mistake since United s goal is slightly offside. 27 Onside call on Ronaldo (R.M.). Correct 32 Onside call on Higuain (R.M.). Correct 49 Robin Van Persie (M.U.) receives the ball after a pass from Evra (M.U.) and is slightly ahead. Offside missed by AR2 who doesn t have the best possible position. 77 Ronaldo (R.M.) is flagged for offside. Correct call. 90+5 Another mistake by AR2. Carrick is in offside position and receives the ball. Again a wrong position by AR2. Offside not given. 6

Additional Assistant Referee 1 them into a coherent comment or mentioning them in the grid below; mandatoryif a - (negative based on a reasonable degree of co-operation with referee Unfortunately he missed Rafael s handball in the line which could result in a penalty and a red card. 62 Rafael (M.U.) while being in the goal line next to the goal-post blocked Higuain s (R.M.) header with his hand. Cakir was very difficult to detect the infringement (penalty and Red Card) but AAR 1 (Gocek) should have seen it. Additional Assistant Referee 2 them into a coherent comment or mentioning them in the grid below; mandatoryif a - (negative based on a reasonable degree of co-operation with referee No involvement for him. He couldn t help Cakir in the missed penalty at 92 since a player was blocking his view. He appeared attentive, as needed Fourth Official Fourth official s performance (reference to technical management like substitutions or signalling of additional time, dealing with benches in case of conflicts) The fourth official was not involved in remarkable situations. Substitutions and additional time were executed adequately. 7
