Artwork Design Dja Dja Wurrung Tram Expression of Interest (EOI) Development of artwork for the Dja Dja Wurrung Tram Proposal Background The Dja Dja Wurrung Tram concept involves an artist or artists to design images and symbols to communicate messages of Dja Dja Wurrung culture. The Bendigo area has been using selected trams from the Bendigo Tramways fleet as a mobile canvas. And attached is an example of the Jimmy Possum tram that will be retired from service and used for our concept. Also see the webpage for history of Bendigo Trams: http://www.bendigotramways.com/ In a similar way that other trams have been decorated with logos, symbols and designs to reflect their specific cause, the Dja Dja Wurrung Tram will receive a unique uniform that distinguishes it from the rest of the fleet. The presentation and operation of the Dja Dja Wurrung Tram will further enable the DDWCAC to promote Aboriginal cultural awareness in Bendigo and introduce the Aboriginal Tourism product it is developing, as it becomes available. The tram will be a highly visible and mobile canvas for the display of your artwork as it runs through the city of Bendigo between the Deborah Reef Mine and the Chinese Joss House. It is planned in the future that the Dja Dja Wurrung Tram will also include a commentary on the Traditional Owners of the area, which can be presented live by DDWCAC cultural interpreters or as a recording in the style of the Talking Trams. Method The artwork we require you to prepare can be provided on paper or digitally will be for the front and rear ends of the tram (as shown in the attachment) also provide available space for decoration in the theme of the Dja Dja Wurrung concept as part of the overall design. We need your suggestions for base coat colour for the tram body and roof can also be recommended if the existing orange colour is considered unsuitable. Alternatively, these can remain in the same colour as the recommended base coat. Internal panels that run above windows and doors (as shown) can also be used to apply the design theme or different art components as appropriate. NOTE: Upholstery on seating inside the tram will remain as is and will not be amended or replaced. Details of exact panel sizes and number will be provided to the successful applicant; however, the attached photographs provide an example of what can be expected in terms of functional canvas space for the design. Please use the H Tram Plan and View image to assist your design. NOTE: The design will not cover the whole tram as there needs to be space to acknowledge key partners and project supporters.
Process Once the design or designs have been selected they will be transferred to a digital format, to be used to print paneling to ensure the presentation is weatherproof and protected in the normal operation of the vehicle. A commercial sign contractor experienced from other Tram projects will be engaged separately to convert the artwork to digital format using a printing process suitable for application to the tram. Available Resources Bendigo Tramways and Bendigo Heritage Attractions staff will be available to assist with any technical aspect of the tram details, including the provision of access to the tram for close inspection of construction, materials and specifications of available panel space. This can be arranged as part of the EoI process through DDWCAC. Information relating to the commercial process of converting art design to digital format and application of all-weather transfers to the tram panels can be made available as required. Project Duration and Payment The timeframe for you to submit artwork design is 4 weeks. The response to this EoI must be submitted to DDWCAC by Friday 12 th November 2016. A once off payment of $4500 will be made to the successful applicant. The successful applicant will be paid as a contractor on provision of an invoice. Payment will be made received by the applicant at the completion of the final concept design for the whole tram.
