In the series history between North Texas and LA Tech, the Lady Techsters are 6-0. That mark is tied for the second-worst against any opponent in Mean Green history; only their 0-11 record vs. Texas is worse, and an 0-6 record against Tulsa is the same. Last season, LA Tech defeated North Texas twice, both by double digits. At the Super Pit on March 1, the Lady Techsters won by a score of 67-54, and in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament it was a 77-59 final score. In those games, Whitney Frazier averaged 16.5 points and eight rebounds. Dynamic Duo... The Lady Techsters are led by the senior duo of Kelia Shelton and Whitney Frazier, who each average 14.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Shelton does most of her damage from the perimeter (22-66 from three-point range) and getting to the foul line (74-97 on foul shots), while Frazier gets most of her points from around the hoop (93-182 from two-point range). Terra it Up... A pleasant surprise for North Texas recently has been sophomore guard Terra Ellison. She has played at least 15 minutes in seven consecutive games (27.7 per game), and is averaging 7.7 points in those contests. Before this recent string of playing time, Ellison had scored 25 total points in her collegiate career over 84 minutes in 18 games. Before a 14-point effort at UTEP, her career-high scoring game was nine, last season vs. Bethune Cookman on November 24. Foul Play... Through the first five games of conference play, North Texas is only being outscored by six from the floor (219-213), but has made 18 fewer foul shots than its opponents (63-45). This is due in large part to a difference of fouls committed by the Mean Green and their opponents. In five games, North Texas has committed 103 fouls (20.6 per game) and its opponents have committed 68 fouls (13.6 per game). In order for the gap to close in the coming weeks, the Mean Green needs to be more aggressive in getting to the basket and drawing contact. Defense First... In order for North Texas to be successful, its defense needs to lead the way. When the Mean Green allows fewer than 50 points to opponents, they are 2-2 on the season. The only two losses were a 46-42 contest vs. Houston and a 46-38 game vs. UT Arlington. If North Texas allows 50 or more points, the team is winless, at 0-12. In addition, the Mean Green is 2-3 when they have more blocks-plus-steals, even further proof that performance on the defensive end is key. Last Game Recap DENTON Despite a close game from beginning to end, North Texas was unable to keep up with the Lady Monarchs in the second half, as Old Dominion defeated the Mean Green, 54-44, on Saturday night in the Super Pit. North Texas was behind Old Dominion 22-21 after the first half after scoring four points in the final 31 seconds. North Texas was able to keep up with Old Dominion for the entirety of the game, but only led once; 11-9 with 7:29 remaining in the first half. The largest lead for the Lady Monarchs was 10, which was the margin of victory as the final buzzer sounded. At the end of the day we ve got to be able to make layups, put backs off the board and free throws, head coach Mike Petersen reiterated. We re doing a good job generating those opportunities, but you just can t win a game at this level shooting what we did tonight. Despite the loss, North Texas shot better from the field at 35.3-percent, higher than Old Dominion s 32.7-percent mark. The difference in the game was at the foul line, where the Lady Monarchs went 17-23 - including 16-21 in the second half - and the Mean Green went 5-9 overall. The Mean Green also struggled with turnovers, ending the game with a total of 21. We had some execution issues tonight, I thought their extended zone bothered us, Mike Petersen said. They have good athletes and they re long and that bothered us some. North Texas senior Briesha Wynn had a double-double, scoring a total of 13 points with 10 rebounds. BreAnna Dawkins and Terra Ellison scored nine points each, but none of the Mean Green were able to keep up with Old Dominion s Jennie Simms, who scored 22 points to lead all scorers.

Fort Worth, TX North Crowley HS Mike Petersen Head Coach Third season Northwest Christian ( 83) Ashley Davis Associate Head Coach Third season TCU ( 05) Coaching Staff Wesley Brooks Assistant Coach Fourth season WVU ( 04) Karen Blair Assistant Coach Second season SMU ( 99) Head Coach Mike Petersen Mike Petersen enters his third season as head coach, in command of the Mean Green women s basketball program. Since being introduced as the seventh coach in North Texas women s basketball history on April 16, 2012, Petersen has changed the perception of North Texas women s basketball into that of a contender. Prior to arriving at North Texas, Petersen was the head coach at Wake Forest from 2004-12 and is the school s all-time winningest coach. He is a coaching veteran with over 30 years of experience, including three seasons as the head coach at TCU. Petersen guided Wake Forest to unprecedented heights in leading the Demon Deacons to the postseason in three of the past four seasons and winning 72 games, which is the best stretch in Wake Forest women s basketball history. He has also been a head coach at Gonzaga (1985-89), New Mexico State (1992-96), and TCU (1996-99). Petersen also spent five seasons with the Minnesota men s basketball team (1999-2004), serving as associate head coach for four seasons. Prior to taking over at TCU, Petersen was the women s head coach at New Mexico State University from 1992-96. In his four seasons with the Aggies, Petersen recorded three consecutive 20-win seasons and compiled an 81-38 (.681) overall record and a 53-19 (.736) record in Big West Conference games. Petersen began his head coaching career in 1985 when he accepted the head women s coaching position at Gonzaga University. During his first season, Petersen led the Zags to a 21-10 record and missed the NAIA National Tournament by a game. After an 11-16 record in their transition year into NCAA Division I, Gonzaga captured the West Coast Conference title in its inaugural season and only their second year at the Division I level. He won 65 games in four seasons at Gonzaga.
