Streaking Rams host Cal PolY Colorado State (7-3) closes non-conference action vs. Cal Poly (4-6) at Moby Arena (8,745) on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. MT. Sunday's contest is the first for the Rams after seven-day break for final exams. The Mustangs have not been home since Monday, wrapping up a three-game road trip at Moby on Sunday. Cal Poly played at New Mexico State on Tuesday, followed by a matchup at New Mexico on Thursday. Rising to the top last season after a seventh-place preseason projection, the Rams are predicted to finish first in the Mountain West this year. CSU returns four starters, including preseason all-conference selection Ellen Nystrom. Combo-guards Gritt Ryder and AJ Newton return with a year of experience together as court generals to lead the team for their senior seasons. The game will be broadcast live on AM 1410 KIIX or fans can hear a live stream on iheartradio. Matt Wozniak, now in his sixth season with the Rams, calls all the action. Live game video will also be available via the Mountain West Network at CSURams.com/videos. About Cal Poly Cal Poly was picked to finish third in the Big West this season behind 2014 tournament champion Cal State Northridge and Hawai'i. Last season the Mustangs posted an 11-5 record in league play, finishing second during the regular season. Preseason all-big West team member Ariana Elegado leads the Mustangs in scoring (15.9), three-pointers (24), assists (3.7), free-throw percentage (.775) and minutes played (34.2). Kristen Ale also averages double figures from the field, with 10.6 points per game. The Mustangs have a fairly balanced attack on the boards, but returning starter Taryn Garza leads the squad with 6.8 rebounds per game. The senior exited Thursday's game at New Mexico after getting hit in the head. After three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 2011 to 2013, the Mustangs fell in the Big West tournament championship game last season, earning a trip to the WNIT. They lost in the first round at San Diego, 82-59, finishing the year with an 18-14 record. The Mustangs played Mountain West opponents Fresno State and New Mexico this season, losing to both schools. Cal Poly played at Fresno State in its season opener, falling 67-56. In Cal Poly's most recent game at New Mexico, the Mustangs held a lead through the majority of the first frame, but a 9-0 run by the Lobos to close out the half would be left unanswered. UNM defeated Cal Poly, 84-68. Elegado tallied a season-high 24 points, burying seven three-point field goals. Series vs. the Mustangs Sunday's meeting will be the second game between the two schools. Colorado State won the first matchup in the series back on March 4, 1995, 83-62 at Moby Arena. This will be head coach Ryun Williams' first matchup vs. Cal Poly. A win will... Extend the Rams' winning streak to four games, the team's longest streak this season. Stretch CSU's home court win streak to six games. Last season the Rams won 13 home games in a row before falling to Southern Utah in the WNIT. That mark ranked as the fourth-best streak in program history. Earn Colorado State its second series win over Cal Poly, improving to 2-0 all-time. Match last season's start with a 8-3 record. Last season CSU was 8-3 heading into conference play. Last time out The Colorado State women s basketball team (7-3) extended its winning streak to three games on Dec. 14 with a hard fought victory over Florida Atlantic 59-46, at Moby Arena. With senior guard Gritt Ryder falling early in the game due to injury, Colorado State turned to its bench for answers. Junior forward Alana Arias led the Rams in scoring with a career-high 20 points. With the Rams trailing the Owls (5-3) by as many as eight points in the first half, Arias was able to hit three straight buckets, giving the Rams a brief three point lead with 6:17 left in the half. She shot an astounding 90.0 percent from the field, tying Melissa Dennett for the second-best field-goal percentage in program history. Coming out of the break, the Rams started out slow allowing the Owls to take its largest lead of the day at nine points with 15:30 left in the game. Colorado State was quick to react though, going on a 17-0 run and holding Florida Atlantic scoreless for 8:14. Quick Facts General Information Location...Fort Collins, Colo. After obtaining the lead at 10:47, Colorado State never looked back as they extended their lead to as much as 17 points. Junior guard Victoria Wells finished with a season-high 10 points, sinking four crucial free-throws to help solidify Colorado State s victory. Knowing that FAU was a strong free-throw shooting team, CSU committed just seven fouls on the afternoon, a seasonlow. That mark is also the lowest in the conference this year. The Rams now rank 16th in the country in personal fouls per game at 14.6. BOISE STATE TIME CHANge Colorado State s Dec. 31 matchup at Boise State has been shifted from a 2 p.m. tipoff to an 11:30 a.m. MT start. The decision was made to accommodate Boise State staff and fans that want to be able to watch the Broncos football team play in the Fiesta Bowl, which kicks off at 2 p.m. CLOSING IN ON a career MILESTONe Now in his 20th season as a head coach, Ryun Williams just earned his 300th career victory at the NCAA level. The Rams' leader is now one of four coaches in the Mountain West with at least 300 wins on his/her resumé. He is now closing in on another milestone in the 2014-15 campaign. Prior to taking over the reins at Colorado State, Williams led programs at South Dakota, Wayne State and Sheridan College. Seven victories away from his 50th win at Colorado State. Williams could become the second fastest coach to reach 50 wins in program history. Only two coaches have reached 50 victories in their first three seasons at Colorado State: Tom Collen and Chris Denker. Ryder: Two-Time MW Player of the Week Senior Gritt Ryder was named Mountain West Player of the Week twice during the non-conference season. It was the first time a player from Colorado State earned the honor multiple times in a single season since Kim Mestdagh did so in 2010. The Rams' floor general, Ryder shined in the first round of the Omni Hotels Classic against former conference foe TCU. She tied a career high with 25 points and organized the Rams with poise from the point guard position against an athletic Horned Frogs team with switching defenses. Ryder was one of two players to reach double figures in each game during the week, adding 11 points in a championship-round, double-overtime battle at Colorado. In the previous week vs. Illinois State she led the team to erase what was an 11-point deficit en route to a 70-49 win over the Redbirds. The Denmark native scored a game-high 22 points, burying a career-high six three-pointers. Ryder shot.750 from beyond the arc. Wells' Turnover streak Victoria Wells has not committed in a turnover in nearly 3.5 games, committing her last miscue at the 15:38 mark of the second half vs. BYU on Dec. 6. The junior currently ranks third in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.22). She has just nine turnovers through 10 games this season. Ryder's minutes Senior Gritt Ryder played nearly every minute over five-game stretch for CSU, ending her streak on Dec. 9 vs. South Dakota Mines after 206 consecutive minutes on the court. No player has done that for the Rams for even one game since Sara Hunter did so during her senior season vs. Utah on March 5, 2008. Hunter tallied 14 games playing every minute for Colorado State during her junior season, including a career-high four consective matchups from Jan. 20- Feb. 4 in 2007. Rams from downtown Colorado State ranks 25th in the country in three-point field goals per game. The Rams' balanced scoring attack features three players who have been successful from beyond the arc so far this year: Jamie Patrick, Hanne Mestdagh and Gritt Ryder. Patrick and Mestdagh lead the team with 24 each, while Ryder has converted 18 treys on the season. All three players rank in the top 10 of the Mountain West in three-pointers made and three-point percentage. Patrick's eight treys vs. Illinois State not only tied a school record, but also ranks as the most three-pointers by any player in the Mountain West this season. Ryder and Mestdagh each made six vs. Illinois State and Drake, respectively, which ties for the second most converted by any player in the league this year. NCAA Statistical RANKINgs Now 10 games into the 2014-15 season, the national statistics show where the Rams fall relative to the rest of the 343 Division I teams. ryun williams South Dakota (1992 and 1997) Third Season at CSU 20th Season Overall (355-221) Ryun Williams, a 20-year coaching veteran, just completed his second season as the head coach of the Colorado State women's basketball program and was named Mountain West Coach of the Year following an outstanding program turnaround. Williams led the Rams from 11-19 (.367) in his first season to 25-8 (.758) in 2013-14. That improvement ranked as the third-best turnaround in the country, and is the best in program history. The WBCA awarded Williams with the 2014 Russell Athletic/WBCA NCAA DI Regional Coach of the Year award. Tasked with repairing what has been nearly a decade of sub-par results, Williams brought eight new faces to the Rams' 2013-14 roster in his second season at the helm. The team quickly realized it had an irrefutable chemistry, which resulted in eight- and 10-game win streaks, totaling 17 wins in 18 games, skyrocketing them to the top of the Mountain West standings and their first regular-season championship in 12 years. The Rams, who were picked to finish seventh in 2013-14 Mountain West preseason poll, more than doubled their win total from the previous season, producing the best record in 13 years, and the third-most victories in program history. The team earned a program-record 10 all-conference awards to six players, in addition to a MW Coach of the Year nod for the second-year coach. The Rams also received their first postseason invitation in 10 years, with a trip to the WNIT. With over 20 seasons in coaching, including 19 as a head coach, Williams has compiled an impressive 348-217 career record, with stops at South Dakota (2008-12), Wayne State College (1998-2008) and Sheridan College (1995-98), leading his squads to seven campaigns of 20 or more victories, five postseason berths and two conference championships. Before coming to Colorado State, Williams was South Dakota's head coach for four seasons. He led the Coyotes to a highly successful stretch during their transition to Division I competition, and helped them become one of the nation's premier defensive teams. A staple of the Coyotes under Williams has been defense, and that was no exception in 2011-12. They ranked second nationally in blocks per game (7.3), eighth in field-goal defense (33.2) and 12th in scoring defense (52.3), leading the Summit League in all three categories. The Coyotes qualified for the WNIT for the first time ever last season as a Division-I program, which was their second straight postseason berth after competing in the Women's Basketball Invitational in 2010-11. South Dakota finished with a No. 97 rank in the RPI, the second-highest of any Summit League team and the highest mark in school history. Prior to arriving at USD in 2008, Williams spent 10 seasons at Wayne State, building that program into a perennial contender in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Williams took over a program that had won just 13 games the previous two seasons and turned it into an NCAA tournament team. His team's recorded 20 wins or more in three of his final four seasons and made appearances in the NCAA Division II North Central Region tournament in two of the last three seasons. While at Wayne State, he compiled a 181-105 record (.632) and became the winningest women's basketball coach in school history. In 2007-08, he guided the Wildcats to a 21-9 record, which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the North Central Region he led his team to an 85-78 upset of North Dakota for the first win in the NCAA tournament in the school's history. In 2005-06, Williams took Wayne State to its first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, as the team notched its best season in school history by going 27-4. They were 13-1 in NSIC play and won the NSIC tournament to earn automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. That season Williams was named the NSIC Coach of the Year. Williams' players have received plenty of postseason recognition. He has had players named WBCA All-America honorable mention, NSIC Player of the Year and NSIC Tournament MVP. Two players earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Year honors, two won the Dodie Martin and two were named the league's newcomers of the year. Before taking over at Wayne State, Williams was the women's head coach at Sheridan College (Wyo.) for three seasons. While there he was named the Wyoming Conference Coach of the Year twice and was the Region IX Coach of the Year. In 1993 he began his head coaching career at Sheridan when he served as the volleyball head coach and men's basketball assistant coach. In his time as the head coach of the volleyball program he put together a 117-66 record. In 1995 Sheridan went 42-8, won the Region IX title and finished fifth at the junior college national tournament. Williams garnered Wyoming Conference and Region IX Coach of the Year honors in 1994 and 1995. Sheridan is also where Williams began his collegiate playing career. He played two seasons at Sheridan, where he was an All-Region IX player as a sophomore. In addition he was a two-time All-Wyoming Conference performer and a two-time academic all-conference selection. He then transferred to South Dakota where he earned All-NCC honors after leading the nation in free throw percentage at 91.2 percent. Williams was also named academic all-conference as a junior and senior. As a high school senior at Campbell County High School, he was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Wyoming in 1988. A native of Gillette, Wyo., Williams earned his associate's degree from Sheridan in 1990, his bachelor's degree from South Dakota in 1992 and his master's degree from South Dakota in 1997. Williams and his wife, Lyndy, have two daughters, Natalie and Emily. Head Coaching Capsule YeaR school Record Conf. Record Conf.
