The loss was the first for the Hawks against a non-division I opponent in the last 18 tries, a span that dated back to 1992. The men held a nine-point lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, but a furious rally by Wilmington proved to be too much to handle HAWKS PUTTING IT ON THE EAGLES AT HOME: The Hawks are undefeated at home in their history against American. The Hawks hold a +9 margin against the Eagles across two home wins, including a 64-62 victory over AU on Nov. 4, 2011. The teams have played against each other each of the last four years while rotating home and away during that span PREVIOUS AMERICAN MATCHUP: UMES dropped a 63-49 decision at American on Jan. 3, 2013. Troy Snyder had a teamhigh 13 points, while Louis Bell had six points and was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. 2013-14 UMES HAWKS MEN S BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS BAXTER BACKING IT UP: Freshman Hakeem Baxter has been nothing short of brilliant to open his collegiate career. He has been named MEAC Rookie of the Week twice (Nov. 25 & Dec. 9) and leads the Hawks in five statistical categories HAWKS ROAD LOSING SKID: Including MEAC play, UMES has lost 23 consecutive road contests since the Hawks won at Morgan State on Feb. 11, 2012. The men have not won an out-ofconference road game in their last 26 tries, a span dating back to their victory at Navy on Nov. 11, 2010 NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Lindy s Sports Annuals released its MEAC Predictions and freshman Hakeem Baxter was selected as MEAC Newcomer of the Year. Baxter is a freshman from Philadelphia and averaged 22.6 ppg at P.E.T. 2013-14 UMES HAWKS MEN S BASKETBALL UMBC (2006-08) - Served as assistant coach for two seasons under Brian Murphy - In 2007-08 the retrievers went 24-9 and won the America East Radford University (2005-06) - Served as an assistant coach and the Highlanders went 16-13 Howard University (2000-05) - Head coach for five seasons, led Bison to 52 wins - Best season was 2001-02 when they went 18-13, 11-7 in MEAC - 2001-02 marked first winning season at HU since 1991-92 Tennessee State University (1991-2000) - Head coach for nine seasons,compiled a 115-139 record - Won the OVC Tournament in 1992-93 and 93-94 - Teams won three Ohio Valley regular season titles (1993, 94, 95) - Coached Carlos Rogers, a 1st round pick in 1994 NBA draft Virginia Tech (1987-91) - Head coach for four seasons, compiled a 56-61 record - Guided Hokies to 19-10 record in first season - Coached Bimbo Coles, leading scorer in VT history Allen enters his sixth season as the head coach of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men s basketball team. He was named coach of the team in June of 2008 and has amassed a record of 25-29 at home during that time. UMES is the third Division I institution that Allen has coached. He was recently inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and was named to Roanoke College s All-Century team in 2013. In his five years at UMES, he has coached three players that have gone on to play professionally n Hillary Haley, Tyler Hines and Freddy Obame Obame. Allen has seen four players recieved All- MEAC honors during his tenure. He has also helped 18 players secure MEAC Commissioners All-Academic Team accolades. Prior to joining UMES, Allen spent two seasons at UMBC and the team combined to go 36-28. In 2007-08, he helped lead the Retrievers to an NCAA Tournament berth. The Roanoke, Va., native served as assistant men s basketball coach at Radford, where the Highlanders posted a record of 16-13 in 2005-06. Allen was the head coach at Howard University for five years from 2000-05. He inherited a program that had struggled the previous two Head Coach Frankie Allen Hometown: Princess Anne, Md. College: Roanoke College, 1971 Experience: 6th Season at UMES 24th overall as collegiate coach season as Howard went just 3-52 during that span. Under his tutelage, the program was ressurected and the Bison had double-digit victories in his first three seasons. He led the team to the school s first winning record in 16 years. He came to Howard from Tennessee State, where he coached the Tigers for nine seasons (1991-2000). His Tennessee State teams won three Ohio Valley Conference titles (1993, 94, 95) and made a pair of appearances (1993, 94) in the NCAA Tournament. His first head coaching position was at Virginia Tech from 1987-91, where he earned Coach of the Year honors from the Metro Conference and Virginia Sportswriters in 1988. Allen had a brilliant playing career for Roanoke (Va.) College from 1967-71. He remains the all-time leading scorer (2,780 points) and rebounder (1,758) at any collegiate level in the state of Virginia. He was a three-time Virginia College Basketball Player of the Year (1969-71) and earned All-American honors in his senior season. Moreover, Allen was the first African-American resident student to earn a degree (B.A., Philosophy) from Roanoke College. Recently, Jones served as the CEO of National Talent Scouting Service where he evaluated high school and junior college talent nationally. Prior to his arrival at UMES, Jones served as the Assistant Coach/ Director of Player Development at Texas Southern University in 2008. He was the Chicago State University (CSU) Men s Head Basketball Coach nearly five seasons (2003-07). He also coached high school basketball and was an Associate Head Coach for IUPUI for seven years. He was an assistant at Western Illinois and at Lincoln College as well. Marlon Terry is in his third season with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Terry has had collegiate coaching stops at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Angelina Junior College (TX), University of Montevallo (Ala.) and the University of Texas at El Paso. Terry helped coach Montevallo to an at-large bid in the Division II NCAA Tournament, where the six-seeded Falcons upset three-seed Georgia Southwestern 62-59 in the first round and eventually finished the season 19-10, led by all-conference guard Antoine Davis, who had 12.5 points per game and 55 steals. Curtis Peery is in his second season as a full-time assistant coach, and fifth season overall. Peery is a 2009 graduate of Roanoke College. He was recently named to the Roanoke College All-Century Team after he was selected three times to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams. He was named to the All-ODAC Tournament Team four times and ranked 12th overall in scoring and rebounding. He has worked numerous camps throughout his careerr in the Roanoke College Basketball Camp and Dell Curry Basketball Camp. Charles Fasnacht is in his second-year as a graduate assistant for the Hawks. He is a 2009 graduate of Memphis University. Prior to UMES, Fasnacht worked as an assistant coach of the Glenvar High School (Salem, Va.) varsity boys team. Before that appointment, he was a media relations intern (2009) and team services assistant (2009-2011) for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association.
