West Monkton Primry School Policy on First Aid in School First Aid is, of course, key necessity in ny professionl environment nd is the est wy to not only sve lives ut lso prevent minor injuries from developing into mjor ones. West Monkton hs duty to ensure we re dequtely nd ppropritely prepred to provide First Aid. This policy will outline how West Monkton must ensure tht the school community is wre of our procedures in the event tht First Aid is required nd how we re prepred for tht event. First Aid Trining nd Equipment SCC provides the school with First Aid kits, which re stored in centrl First Aid oxes in Medicl Room. Boxes re regulrly checked to ensure they meet stndrds. All Teching Assistnts, Erly Yers nd Office stff re First Aid trined. Clss techers re not First Aid trined. All stff must e wre of the loctions of First Aid kits. This is in ccordnce with the Locl Authority s guidnce on First Aid procedure. SLT s Role in First Aid It is necessry for ll memers of the SLT to ensure First Aid prepredness is ssessed nd reviewed on regulr sis. Not only must they ssess the level of preprtion ut they must ct on ny issues tht hve een rised. The Helth nd Sfety (First-Aid) Regultions 1981 stte tht employees in mngement roles must provide First Aid equipment nd ensure tht ny dditionl trining sed on site specific hzrds is received for ll First Aiders. SLT s ssessment of West Monkton s First Aid requirements must e dequte nd pproprite to the schools circumstnces. It should tke into ccount not only pupils ut ll persons on site including stff nd prents. A risk ssessment of the site should e conducted nd pproprite First Aid dvice completed longside ny pproprite risks. Attched to this policy is n exmple of checklist for SLT when ssessing West Monkton s First Aid provisions. Wht must e kept in First Aid kit? While there re no mndtory requirements for the contents of kit minimum guideline consists of: 20 sterile dhesive dressings; 2 sterile eye pds; 4 individully wrpped ndges; 6 sfety pins; 6 medium sized sterile un-medicted wound dressings; 2 lrge sterile un-medicted wound dressings; 1 pir of disposle gloves.
Arrngements should e mde to keep kits fully stocked nd sufficient ck-up supplies should e kept on site. The whereouts nd qulity of the kit is the responsiility of First Aid trined stff ut should e clerly visile nd portle. Trvelling First Aid kits must lso e tken when pupils or group of stff exit the site, for n eductionl field trip or otherwise, nd n ppropritely trined First Aider must ccompny the group. Risk ssessments for externl visits must lso include First Aid responses to potentil hzrds; see West Monkton s Trips nd Visits policy for further informtion. Extr-curriculr ctivities, such s sports clu, will either hve trined First Aider running the ctivity or there will e trined First Aider on the school site during the ctivity Procedure in First Aid Emergency In sitution requiring First Aid, trined First Aiders will: Act sfely, promptly nd effectively; Appropritely dminister First Aid to sclds, urns, one injury, muscle or joint pin, shock, eye injury, poisoning. First Aiders re le to perform crdio-pulmonry resuscittion, the recovery position nd to cre for the wounded or leeding where necessry. The first ider/ppointed person will lwys cll n mulnce on the following occsions: In the event of serious injury In the event of ny significnt hed injury In the event of period of unconsciousness Whenever there is possiility of frcture or where this is suspected Whenever the first ider is unsure of the severity of the injury Whenever the first ider is unsure of the correct tretment If n mulnce is clled, the cller must spek to the emergency services nd give the following informtion 1. Stte wht hppened 2. The child s nme 3. The ge of the child 4. Whether the csulty is rething nd/or unconscious 5. The loction of the school In the event of n ccident involving child, where pproprite, it is our policy to immeditely notify the prent of their child s ccident. The Hedtecher or, in his sence, memer of the SLT (in-line with the schools emergency procedure) should e informed if the decision to contct the emergency services is undertken- even if the incident took plce on field trip or residentil trip.
Notifiction of Prents Our procedure for notifying prents of child s ccident is to telephone them on the contct numers we hve on record. In the event of us eing unle to mke contct we will leve messge nd ttempt to rech them every hlf hour. In emergency cses, we will contct the prent on their emergency contct numer. Procedure in rection to specific incidents: Cuts: The nerest First-Aider will del with cuts, minor cuts should e properly clened nd dressed. Severe cuts require the notifiction of prents nd, if necessry, contcting the emergency services. All incidents must e recorded in the ccident file, oth mjor nd minor. Hed-injuries: All hed injuries should e treted s serious incidents. Any pupil who suffers hed injury should e treted ppropritely, their prents informed nd their welleing monitored. All hed-injuries should e recorded in the ccident file nd the pupil given sticker to note tht hed ump hs occurred. Allergic Rections: All first id trined stff re wre of procedures involved in identifying nd treting llergic rections. Serious llergic rections, those tht require the use of n EPI-Pen, cn e treted (see Generl Medicine Policy). Minor Allergic Rections should e monitored nd cre pln put in plce. All llergic rections should e reported to prents nd recorded in the ccident file. All incidents requiring first-id should e recorded in the first-id incident ook tht is kept within the first id ox. All serious incidents will require n ccident form completing y those stff memers tht delt with the incident. The form should then e pssed to the school dministrtion tem for logging on EEC Live. Review The First Aid Policy should e reviewed innully y the School Business Mnger to ensure tht procedures nd prctices re eing implemented ppropritely nd they re effective in keeping high stndrds in reltion to First Aid within school.
