NWC "Player of the Week" honors went to Marques Johnson ofwillamette, who led the Bearcats to a pair of wins in the John Lewis Classic with 4 7 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and steals. * Bmins Sink Free Throw Record in Win over Dominican When the Bruins canned 8-9 free throws in their 82-7 win over Dominican University of Illinois in the Lee Fulmer Tournament in Redlands, Calif., on Dec. 7, they set a new record for free throw accuracy with at least one miss. The percentage of.947 eclipsed a.929 (-4) mark against Willamette on Jan., 999. The most free throws the Bruins have ever made in a game with no misses was an - performance at Western Baptist on Dec. 7, 994. * First Winning Streak for Bruins in Two Seasons: With a 78-75 overtime win over Chapman and an 82-7 win over Dominican IL Dec. -7 in the Lee Fulmer Tournament in Redlands, Calif., the George Fox Bruins put together back-to-back wins for the first time in two seasons. Not since defeating Whitworth -9 and Whitman 79-72 at home on Jan. 2-27, 2, had the Bruins posted consecutive victories. They will try to make it three in a row Tuesday, Dec., at Puget Sound Christian. The last -game winning streak for the Bruins was Dec., 998-Jan. 8, 999, when the Bruins beat La Verne, Pomona-Pitzer, and Whitman, all on the road. *Schmick Stands Out in Sub Stints: The Bruins discovered some "instant offense" off the bench when rookie Aaron Schmick (Fr., W, Hillsboro, Ore.) turned into two sparkling relief efforts in the Lee Fulmer Tournament Dec. 5-7 in Redlands, Calif. In a 78-75 overtime over Chapman on Friday, he had a perfect shooting night, going 5-5 from the field (- on 's) and 2-2 from the line for points. He followed that up with a career-high 7 points in an 82-7 win over Dominican IL on Saturday, hit 5- from the floor (-2 on 's) and - from the line. He also collared a career-high 7 rebounds. * Ben Becomes Third Melvin Brother to Play for Bruins: Ben Melvin (Fr., W, Pleasant Hill, Ore.) became the third member of the Melvin family to play for the George Fox Bruins when he played 8 minutes in the Bruins' 9-57 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Dec. 5 in the Lee Fulmer Tournament in Redlands, Calif. Melvin went scoreless with one assist in that game, but notched his first two points the next day in a 78-75 overtime win against Chapman, hitting one field goal while grabbing rebounds. Ben has a ways to go to catch brother Travis Melvin, who is th on the Bruins' all-time scoring list with,28 points from 998-22. After three games in the Lee Fulmer Tournament in Redlands, Calif., he has been courtside for 475 straight Bruin men's basketball games, home and away, and has also worked 85 straight home games. The last home game he missed was in 972. Altogether, he has seen 95 George Fox men's basketball games. He watched his 9th Bruin men's basketball Friday, Feb. 5, 22,when George Fox hosted Whitman as a part of Homecoming weekend, and was presented with a special engraved souvenir basketball at halftime by director of athletics Craig Taylor. LAST WEEK (Recaps): 25- CLAREMONT 9, GEORGE FOX 57: Bruins Drop First Game in Redlands Tournament to Stags REDLANDS, Calif.- After hanging close in the first half, the George Fox University Bruins saw the bottom drop out in the second half as they fell9-57 to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Stags Thursday afternoon (Dec. 5) here at the University of Redland's Lee Fulmer Memorial Men's Basketball Tournament. George Fox, despite shooting only 29% in the first half (8-27), trailed by only seven, 2-25, at the break, thanks to a defensive effort that held CMS to 5% shooting (-7). But while the Bruins still could not find their shooting touch in the second half, improving only slightly to % (8-24), the Stags blistered the nets for 8% (9-28) and coasted to victory. Mark Gayman led the Bruins with points, hitting 7-2 from the field, and Nate Tyler chipped in with. Gayman and Bryan Wadlow had 5 rebounds apiece. The Stags showed balanced scoring with players each contributing points, led by Hans Meyer with 2. Josh Keough, Michael Scharf, and Gregory Pelz scored apiece. Josh Zazulia had 7 rebounds to lead CMS, which won the rebounding war 5-25. Keough had a game-high 5 assists. 2- GEORGE FOX 78, CHAPMAN 75 (OT): Bruins Get First Win of Season over Chapman in Overtime REDLANDS, Calif.- Brett Yeager made a steal under the basket and layup to break a 74-74 tie in overtime, sparking the George Fox University Bruins to their first win of the 22- men's basketball season, a 78-75 victory over the Chapman University Panthers Friday afternoon (Dec. ) here at the University ofredland's Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament. Yeager's big play came after he had had a short inside shot blocked and recovered by the Panthers, and the Bruins went on even their tournament record at - and lift their season record to -2. Chapman fell to -2 in the tournament and - on the season.
The Bruins shot 57% in the first half (7 -) to build a 8-29 lead at the break, and did not cool off much in the second half, sinking 52% (-2). The Panthers got back in the ballgame with long-range bombing, however, hitting 7- from behind the arc in the second half to force a 72-72 deadlock at the end of regulation. Mark Gayman led the way offensively for George Fox, scoring points for the third straight game before fouling out. Nate Tyler added 5 points, Aaron Schmick came off the bench to score, and Bryan Wadlow scored 2. Schmick did not miss a shot, canning 5-5 from the floor, including a -pointer, and 2-2 from the line. Brett Yeager had 7 rebounds and Trevor Person had assists to lead the Bruins in those categories. Landon Lewis led all scorers with 29 points, including 7 -pointers, for Chapman, and Brian Spielman added 2. Brian VonDerahe had 9 rebounds as the Panthers controlled the boards 5-29. Chapman shot 9% for the game, including -7 from the field in the overtime. 27- GEORGE FOX 82, DOMINICAN 7: Bruins Down Dominican to Finish 5th in Fulmer Tournament REDLANDS, Calif.- Mark Gayman scored 2 points and the George Fox University Bruins hit 8-9 for 94.7% on free throws, enabling the Bruins to defeat the Dominican University (Ill.) Stars 82-7 and capture 5th place in the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7) here at the University of Redlands. Dominican held a three-point advantage at the break, 45-42, due to 54.5% shooting (8-) that included 7- from -point range, but the Bruins hung close by making 7-7 free throws in the half. The Bruins out-scored the Stars in the second half 4-28, sinking -2 from the stripe, most of them late in the game to hold off the Stars. Gayman, after three straight games with points, broke out of that 'rut' by hitting 9-9 from the field with one trey and 2-2 free throws for 2 points, and also led the defensive effort with 5 steals. Aaron Schmick came off the bench to score 7 for George Fox, including - from the line, while Nate Tyler scored 2, including 8-9 on freebies. Tyler had 8 rebounds, and Bryan Wadlow and Schmick had 7 apiece. Wadlow passed out 5 assists. For Dominican, Eric Dunn had a game-high 25 points, with Steve Preston adding 5, T.J. Eskildsen, and David Crews. Crews had 9 rebounds as the Stars held a slight rebounding edge, 9-7. Dunn also led the Stars with 8 assists and steals. The Bruins evened their season record at 2-2 and were 2- in the tournament, while the Stars fell to 2- overall and -2 in the tournament. Stars 82-7 and capture 5th place in the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7) here at the University of Redlands. Dominican held a three-point advantage at the break, 45-42, due to 54.5% shooting (8-) that included 7- from -point range, but the Bruins hung close by making 7-7 free throws in the half. Yeager's big play came after he had had a short inside shot blocked and recovered by the Panthers, and the Bruins went on even their tournament record at - and lift their season record to -2. Chapman fell to -2 in the tournament and - on the season.
The Bruins shot 57% in the first half (7-) to build a 8-29 lead at the break, and did not cool off much in the second half, sinking 52% ( -2 ). The Panthers got back in the ball game with long-range bombing, however, hitting 7- from behind the arc in the second half to force a 72-72 deadlock at the end of regulation. Mark Gayman led the way offensively for George Fox, scoring points for the third straight game before fouling out. DOMINICAN 7: Bruins Down Dominican to Finish 5th in Fulmer Tournament REDLANDS, Calif.- Mark Gayman scored 2 points and the George Fox University Bruins hit 8-9 for 94.7% on free throws, enabling the Bruins to defeat the Dominican University (Ill.) Stars 82-7 and capture 5th place in the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7) here at the University ofredands. Dominican held a three-point advantage at the break, 45-42, due to 54.5% shooting (8-) that included 7- from -point range, but the Bruins hung close by making 7-7 free throws in the half. The Bruins out-scored the Stars in the second half 4-28, sinking -2 from the stripe, most of them late in the game to hold off the Stars.
