KING CITY SENIORS CENTRE 30 Fisher Street, King City, Ontario, L7B 1G3 Tel: 905-833-2824 NEWSLETTER Fall Edition September 2011 NOTES FROM THE CHAIR I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful Summer weather we ve had and are now ready to participate in the many wonderful Fall and Winter activities. The annual Corn and Weiner Roast will be held on Friday, September 16 th from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is a no charge event to show the Centre s appreciation for our membership s support. COME JOIN US AND BRING A FRIEND. Don t forget to come out and join the festivities at our Annual Christmas Open House and Sing-Along on Sunday, December 11 th from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. This is a fun event with light refreshments served. Our condolences to Roy Robson on the loss of his sister Louise, and also to Bob Field on the loss of his brother. Thanks to the work of the volunteers who made our June barbeque a success. A good time was had by all who attended. We were entertained by the King City Angels vocal group, and we re sorry to hear that it was their last performance. We thank them, and wish them all good luck. Wednesday, September 14 th is our annual Membership Sign-Up Day at the Centre from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. At the same time the Travel Club will be holding their Sign-Up Day for everyone who wishes to book one of the great trips that are on the schedule. Social Programs There s something for everyone... at The Centre It s September already, and our Social Programs are about to start up after the summer lull. For new members who have just registered, and/or those who want to be reminded from time to time, we are setting out the numerous activities the Seniors Centre has to offer. No matter which programs appeals to you, we know you will want to join in the fun, enjoy yourself and meet new people. All we can promise is - you ll have a great time! Betty Simmonds, Social Convenor pg. 4 Art Classes Thursdays The fee is $1.00 per session plus a nominal instructor fee. Contact: Margaret Stoicheff at 1-905-642-6250. Badminton Mondays If you feel fit and would like a bit of exercise, come and join us Monday evenings at the King City Public School at 7:30 p.m. beginning September 12 th. If you don t know how to play, we will teach you and we ll even provide you with a racket if needed. The fee is $1.00. Contact: Vic Warner at 905-833-3510 Bid Euchre Tuesdays This popular activity is held every Tuesday at the Centre at 1:00 p.m. and starts up again on September 6 th. We welcome any new players. The fee is $1.00 Contact: Chuck Hansford at 905-939-2611 Carpet Bowling Thursdays Carpet Bowling is held Thursday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. downstairs at the Centre. The fee is $1.00. Computer classes Thursdays These classes are held on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the King City Library under the leadership of Mark Cornell. Should you wish to attend the class, please confirm your plans with the library beforehand. Contact Carol Field at 905-833-3324 pg. 5 Drop-in Centre Wednesdays This new program will start up again in September. It will, again, be held Wednesday afternoons for any member to drop in for a cup of coffee and a chat with fellow members. Cost $1.00 Contact Marilyn Munroe at 905-833-6606 Euchre Alternate Fridays Traditional euchre is played every second Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The fee is $2.25 plus an additional $1.00 if you wish to enter the lucky draw at the end of the evening. It s a fun night with prizes and refreshments. Contact: Betty Coles at 905-833-5380 or Betty Simmonds at 905-833-5140. Five-pin Bowling - Tuesdays We bowl every Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Pro Bowl Alleys in Richmond Hill and our season starts up again on September 13 th. It s all about the fun, and should you require transportation, just call Betty Coles at 905-833-5380 or Vic Warner at 905-833-3510 and you ll be picked up. Fee: $4:50 for three games. Bowling shoes are free. Contact: Betty Coles at 995-833-5380 Gentle Motion Thursdays This is an exercise class similar to Tai Chi and is performed in a very gentle motion. The class has become very popular and is held Thursday mornings at 9:30 at the Centre. Fee: $1.00 per session For information, contact Vince Cancelli at 905-833-6305. Shuffleboard Wednesdays We may be few in number, but the fun created at these games is great! We would like to see more members engage in this activity, which is held downstairs at the Centre at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. The fee is $1.00. Contact: Vic Warner 905-833-3510.

Keep Fit & Exercise Class - Mondays We meet at the Centre every Monday morning at 9:30 under the leadership of our new instructor, Debbie Holden. Debbie is an authorized instructor, and we are really enjoying her expertise. The exercises are geared to Seniors, and if you wish to join us, we know you will enjoy the classes. The fee is $35.00 for ten classes. Contact Betty Simmonds at 905-833-5140 for information. Pot Luck Lunches Our popular Pot Luck lunches are back after the Summer break and will be held the third Friday of every month at the Centre, unless otherwise announced, so mark your calendars. Please, bring along either a first course dish, or dessert. Thank you. Tea and coffee are provided, and the lunches start at 12:00 noon. Farid assisted in the last revision of the Canadian Food Guide. Want to better understand supplements and cardiovascular health? Do you have other health-related questions or concerns? Come along with those questions and bring note paper to write down the wealth of information that you will receive. Sponsored by King City Pharmacy. Monday, October 17, 2011 time to be announced. Monday, November 14, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. O.P.P./York Regional Police Drive Wise The O.P.P. will offer a driver education seminar that will give us a shopping basket of succinct tips, suggestions and driving strategies, which are preventative measures against the most likely causes of accidents and mishaps faced by older drivers. Drive Wise is sponsored in part by CARP, Canada s Association for the Fifty-Plus. CARP believes that driver education will ensure the safety of Seniors, as well as preserve their right to drive. $2.00 at the door, all are welcome.
