Because of the Civil War, labor shortages delayed construction of the railway and upon conclusion of the war, Union Pacific employed veterans of the Union army, many of them Irish immigrants. After completion of the railroad, many of the Irish immigrants would go on to settle and call Utah home.

P a r a d e H i s t o r y a n d F i s h e r H o u s e i n t r o d u c t i o n The first official Saint Patrick's Day Parade was in 1978. But the first parade was the previous year when, on St. Patrick's Day, four upstanding men were enjoying themselves at a local establishment. Suddenly one of the men declared, Let s have a parade! The four men promptly stood up, walked out onto 4th South and cheerfully marched down the street. The following year would see the parade officially go down Main Street with an estimated 5,000 spectators. Since then, The Hibernian Society of Utah s St. Patrick's Day Parade has become a staple event in the community with approximately 20,000 spectators and participants. Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, and in Europe, close to the medical center or hospital it serves. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans families an estimated $400+ million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation. Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans. Page 6
