VRG FINALLY HITS THE TRACK AT SUMMIT POINT IN 2018! by Bill Stoler Well, the good news was the VRG finally had a chance to turn some racing laps at the Summit Point Raceway during annual Turkey Bowl during the weekend of Nov. 23-25, 2018. After an unprecedented cancellation of the Jefferson 500 in May, it felt great to get back to a track that I consider my home track because it is only located a little more than hour or so from my home in the Keystone State. While tracks like Watkins Glen, VIR and Lime Rock get a lot more attention and are considered favorites by many, I really consider this track to be a very special place. It would be a safe bet to reason that it s probably because I visited it for the first time as a teen in the early 80s when the pro races like the Budweiser Trans Am Series, the Rabbit Bilstein Cup and the Renault LeCar series took place here. I remember the packed grandstands and the woods were filled with campsites. I remember drivers like Ken Slagle, Willy T. Ribbs, David Hobbs and like everyone else, some celebrity guy driving a Datsun that went by the initials PLN. As I look back, I didn t realize how lucky I was to have this level of racing in my backyard. By the late 80s I (like many) put racing on the backburner and was busy with work and starting a family. By the time I returned in the late 90s, I was disappointed that the pro-racing was gone but the SCCA Club racing was still here. Over the years, I ve learned to appreciate that Bill Scott s vision for the track (a training and club racing facility) that probably kept the track profitable and allowed us to enjoy the track as we know it today. MORE RAIN?? Keeping with the theme for the VRG in 2018, it was a weekend that had its share of challenges by Mother Nature. Friday was a very pleasant day, with blue skies and seasonable temperatures. Saturday was a mess. Freezing Rain during the morning forced Saturday s on-track schedule to be scrubbed. Sunday was another beautiful day and it was good to finish up on a weather positive. Maybe Blue Skies will be our weather theme next year? Let s hope! I m sure the ominous forecast earlier in the week kept the car count down, but there was still plenty of cool cars to photograph. 2

It was good to see our friends from Canada still made the trip to Summit Point including the 1964 Merlyn Mk 6A owned by John Hawkes of Toronto. Look for a Pick of the Liter piece I m preparing on this car in a future issue of Vintage Motorsport Magazine. Mark Rosenberg brought his Peerless to the Turkey Bowl and is always a treat to watch. Ralph Pagington had his Mercury Bobcat purring and had a good outing, but his paddock partner Jim Karamanis only made Friday morning practice before the Pinto gave up for the season. Steven Hirschtritt brought his 1963 Turner Mk II with a 1275 cc powerplant to the Turkey Bowl this year. There was a new look for Larry Smith as he was piloting his beautiful blue 1967 MG Midget, a recently restored acquisition. Paul Wilson brought his wonderful 1965 Lola T70 and the sound of that car thundering down the front straight at Summit Point certainly grabs your attention. Cruising the paddock, you couldn t miss the old school looking Joisey Boys jackets that the crew members were wearing in the Nial McCabe pit area. Despite the weather, Saturday wasn t a total loss, as the VRG dinner took place at the Piccadilly s Public House and the featured speaker, Hank Giffin. He told some entertaining stories of his racing years, but really captivated the audience with incredible stories of his career as a Commander in the USN, including a rather tense encounter with a Cuban patrol boat during the Mariel Boatlift Crisis with Cuba. WINDS OF CHANGE Next season will see some changes. This was the last race that the VRG partnered with the Scott Family at Summit Point. The track has been sold to Xator Corporation and according to Competition Director Chris White, the new ownership is committed to keeping the racing going. He sees the changes as a positive. A number of improvements are planned for the track during the off-season and that includes a threemile-long deer fence that will enclose all three circuits. The Turkey Bowl will move to one week earlier (the weekend before Thanksgiving that was requested by the track), so that the track s employees would have the holiday weekend off. 2019 will also mark the 50th anniversary of the Summit Point Raceway. It is hard to believe it s been 50 years since the first Formula Vee race took place back in 1969 and saw Bill Scott edge out Skip Barber for the win. THINGS ARE LOOKING UP It s really good news to see the Turkey Bowl will continue next year. In the days leading up to this year s event, I kept checking the entries. Thanks to Michael Oritt s relentless promotion in the weeks leading up to event, the entry list kept growing. There is little doubt that the weather fatigue this year impacted the event. Considering a less than favorable forecast, I was 3

pleasantly surprised when I arrived at the track. Moving the event to the weekend before the holiday, should help the event turnout next year. Heck, you ll even have time to join the Black Friday shopping after parking the race car for the year! MICHAEL ORITT TURKEY BOWL SWAN SONG The 2018 Turkey Bowl was the Swan Song for Michael Oritt as the event coordinator. His efforts for the past five years have been greatly appreciated. It should be noted Michael pretty much planned these events on his own and VRG President, Jim Karamanis, indicated his desire that next year s event will be organized by more than one individual. Thanks for all of your effort Michael and especially for all of those cool VRG Turkey Bowl hats! A few thoughts from Michael Oritt: I ve been Event Coordinator of the Turkey Bowl for the last five years and would like to thank VRG s Board of Directors for the opportunity to serve. During that period, I have learned what it takes to make an event happen and I have seen the work and effort so many volunteers give very often out of the limelight and without recognition in order to make our club function as well as it does. I will certainly miss this opportunity to serve and the challenges that go with trying to do so, both during the event and in the weeks leading up it. However, I m looking forward to once again being a racer at one of my favorite tracks in what I am sure will be a bigger and better future rendition of the Turkey Bowl. In the meantime, I am going to be in need of a good excuse to get out of attending future Thanksgiving dinners, so any suggestions will be appreciated. Well, that s my final view from behind the lens in 2018. It s a privilege to hang out with an incredible group of racing friends all year long and get to visit some incredible tracks. Thank you for all of the kind words and support you give me all year long. I enjoy capturing those images and sharing them with you via the newsletter and my website. Be sure to look for my VRG contributions to Vintage Motorsport and Victory Lane Magazine. It is always my hope and desire that my work helps to attract racers to our great club and helps to fill the paddock with more cool cars! 4

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT by Jim Karamanis On behalf of the VRG board of directors, I d like to wish you and your families a very Happy New Year! 2018 was a challenging one for our club. The relentless rain hit every single one of our events. Not only did it force the cancellation of the Jefferson 500, but it also caused losses at other events where we would likely have broken even or been in the black (Pittsburgh and Turkey Bowl). All this said, there was a core group of you who showed up no matter what and I can t thank you enough for your continued support of VRG. As you already know, the board has taken some measures to make up for the financial deficit in the long term. This includes adjusting our membership fee for inflation and tweaking some of the activities at our events in 2019. Feedback from membership has been overwhelmingly positive in support of changes that the board has rolled out. We will continue to solicit your feedback as we adjust to our current environment. One thing that you as club members have made clear is that track time is king and we will do everything we can to ensure that this is the emphasis at our events for 2019. Some changes that you ll notice for the 2019 calendar include The Glen being moved back one week (this was the only date that the track would give us) and Turkey Bowl being moved up one week, to fall before Thanksgiving. Management at Summit Point asked us to consider a change with Turkey Bowl so that their staff would no longer have to work the holiday. The board also believes that it may encourage a larger turnout than we have had the last few years so we also welcome this change. For those who normally use Turkey Bowl as an excuse to not attend black Friday festivities with your family, sorry! For 2019, your board of directors is as follows: Jim Karamanis President Mike Lawton Vice President Cal Trumbo Treasurer Nial McCabe Secretary Storm Field Director Scott Janzen Director Keith Lawrence Director Graham Long Director Butch O Connor Director Your board is here for you, this is your club. Please feel free to reach out to anyone on the board at any time to make sure that your opinion is heard and that your questions are answered. The board is looking into ways of interacting more directly with members on a regular basis, stay tuned for more information to come on this. Finally, as I enter my final year as President of VRG, I d like to thank all the members for their feedback and support over the years. Serving the club takes time and effort, but the interaction with the membership makes it all worth it. And, rest assured, the club is in very good hands moving forward with the members that you have elected to the board of directors and the skill sets that they bring to the table. All the best in 2019. Jim Karamanis, President, VRG 5
