2008 SEASON PREVIEW MOMENTUM Momentum can be a powerful thing. When a team goes on a long losing streak, the skid can become almost impossible to stop because of the momentum working against the team. When a team goes on a long winning streak, they can become virtually unbeatable. Entering last season, the Golden Grizzlies were certainly on momentum s wrong side. But entering the second season of coach Rob Beam s tenure at Oakland University, the Golden Grizzlies have not only stopped the downward momentum but have seen the pendulum begin to swing the other way. After a rough 2006 season, even the most optimistic Oakland volleyball observer would have a difficult time seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. However, the strides made by the Golden Grizzlies during the 2007 season, the struggles of previous seasons are all but a distant memory. Head coach Rob Beam hit the ground running in his first year and the Golden Grizzlies set a Division I record with eight victories, an improvement of seven wins over the 2006 campaign. The Golden Grizzlies enter this season with a renewed sense of optimism, and with OU s highly-touted recruiting class adding to a talented corps of returning players, Oakland is poised to make some noise this season. Both Lauren Duquette and Katy Wilson earned conference honors last season, as Duquette was named to the all-summit League second team and Wilson was named to the Summit League all-freshman team. Both return to the Golden Grizzlies lineup poised to help Oakland make a jump into the ranks of the contenders in The Summit League. Duquette s selection to an all-league team marks the first time since the 2005 season that an OU player has earned all-league laurels. Duquette returns as OU s defensive leader after setting a school record with 619 digs, stabilizing an OU defense that went from allowing opponents to hit.233 in the 2006 season to just.187 in the 2007 season. Despite missing several matches due to injury last season, Wilson held the overwhelming team lead in assists, dishing out 459 and averaging 6.56 assists per match. Wilson returns as the team s primary setter this season and hopes to see the trend of improvement that led the OU offense that hit just.067 in the 2006 campaign to improve to a.142 percentage last season. Duquette and Wilson lead OU s returners, a talented group that will be joined by five very talented newcomers as the Golden Grizzlies look to move to the next level this season. Outside hitters Amy Golem and Adrienne Leone return after pacing the OU offensive attack last season. Golem led OU with 316 kills, averaging 3.04 per game, while placing second on the team with 236 digs. Leone returned after sitting out the 2006 season and notched 281 kills on the year, second on the team. Averaging 2.87 kills per game, Leone also added 49 block assists and had 14 matches with 10 or more kills. Senior Leah Dupuie will provide stability and leadership in the middle for the Golden Grizzlies. Dupuie proved to be one of OU s top two-way threats, averaging 1.91 kills and 1.25 blocks per game. Her blocks per game averaged tied her for third Lauren Duquette was an all-summit League selection in 2007. in The Summit League. Fellow senior Stephanie Parkin joined Dupuie as one of OU s top two-way threats last season, averaging 1.45 blocks and 1.38 kills per game. Hallie Beattie, Brittany Dunn, and Kelli Fiedler will return to provide both experience and depth defensively, while junior Nikki Pawson returns from an injuryshortened 2007 campaign to provide depth at middle hitter. Both Jessica Hardman and Emily Hoffiz return for their second seasons, and are expected to contribute to the OU effort this year. Five newcomers will vie for playing time and should pick up valuable experience this season. Samantha Filipek joins the OU program after playing at Stony Brook, while highly touted freshmen Allison Bell, Jenna Lange, Jenny Jones, and Ashleigh Slemmer round out a wellrespected recruiting class that was ranked in the top-95 nationally by PrepVolleyball. com. 2008 Golden Grizzlies Volleyball 1 www.ougrizzlies.com Page 12

robbeam Head Coach 8-21 at Oakland 8-21 overall 2nd year Clarke College, 96 HEAD COACH rob beam Oakland University head volleyball coach Rob Beam is not someone who is content to accept moral victories. While some coaches would accept the improvements made by the Golden Grizzlies in Beam s first year, Beam is driven to build upon the progress made by a young Oakland squad in 2007, when the Golden Grizzlies improved from one win in 2006 to eight wins in 2007, and take this team to the the next competitive level, with the goal of putting together a team that will contend for The Summit League championship year-in and year-out. Before coming to Oakland, Beam spent two years with Illinois State, making an immediate impact on the Redbirds liberos and defensive specialists. Under his guidance during his last season at ISU, the Redbirds set a new school record of 2,291 digs, finishing ninth in the nation in digs per game and breaking an Illinois State record that was 22 years old. In his first season in Normal, he mentored the Missouri Valley Conference Libero of the Year, Ashley Grubb, who led the league in digs per game. During Beam s two seasons at Illinois State the Redbirds had a combined record of 35-25 (.583). Prior to Illinois State, Beam earned rave reviews as a recruiter, scout, administrator and strategist at Wright State. During Beam s five seasons in Dayton, Ohio, the Raiders ranked in the top-15 in the NCAA in digs per game three different times: seventh in 2003, eighth in 2001 and 15th in 2002. They also achieved a best-ever win percentage of.750 in 2001. Beam has extensive club volleyball experience, having coached with both Adversity Volleyball Club and Dayton Juniors. His 2002 Blue Angels age 17 team took third in the Open Division at the Junior Olympic National Championships. He also served as Master Coach for the 16-18 age groups and wrote Principles for a Competitive Practice, a guide to be used to help develop the club s coaches. 4 The Golden Grizzlies volleyball program has made great strides under the tutelage of second-year coach Rob Beam. A native of Sycamore, Ill., Beam was an assistant for both men s and women s volleyball at Quincy University from 1999-2000 before joining the Wright State staff the following year. He was the Raiders associate head coach for two seasons prior to coming to Illinois State. A 1992 Glenbrook South (Ill.) High School graduate, Beam was the 1996 Clarke College Athlete of the Year while serving as captain of the volleyball team. While completing his bachelor s degree in philosophy in 1996, he coached high school volleyball at Dubuque (Iowa) Senior High School. Beam has also been a leader with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) in both service and research. His presentation at the 2001 AVCA Convention entitled, Maximizing Coverage at the Point of Attack has subsequently been published in both Coaching Volleyball Magazine and Best of Coaching Volleyball Volume 2. 2008 Golden Grizzlies Volleyball 1 www.ougrizzlies.com Page 13

Kelly Price enters her second season as graduate assistant coach for the Golden Grizzlies. She assists with the day-to-day operations of the volleyball program. In her first season as a graduate assistant, Oakland University engineered one of the biggest turnarounds in the country, improving from just one win in 2006 to an eight-win campaign in 2007. Prior to coming to Oakland University, Price coached the Fraser Volleyball Club from 1997-2005 and is now coaching Michigan Elite Volleyball Club team. Her Fraser club tied for third at the USAV Nationals in 2003. Price also served as a coach for the varsity volleyball squad at South Lake High School from 2001-2003.
