Nov. 21 7:30 p.m. Athletics O rena Rochester, Mich. vs. CLEVELAND STATE Record: 14-13, 7-7 Horizon Last Match: W, 3-1 at YSU (Nov. 14) PENGUINS HAVE SIGHTS SET ON TOURNAMENT RUN THIS WEEKEND The fourth-seeded Youngstown State volleyball team will try to rekindle its magic from the first-half of conference play to make a run in this week s Horizon League Tournament. The Penguins will play Cleveland State in the first round on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Oakland Athletic Center O rena. All of the tournament s matches will be streamed on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app. The Penguins had their best regular season in 15 years, with their 16 wins being the most since 1999 and a school-record-tying seven conference victories. YSU entered the second half of Horizon League play in a three-way tie for first, and it had a 7-3 conference mark at the end of October. The Penguins hit a slide in the four November matches to finish the regular season, but their play early in the season is indicative of their potential for a hot streak this week. Sophomore Val Jeffery was voted the Horizon League Setter of the Year, and Lexi Egler and she were named All-Horizon League. Sam Brown was also honored as a member of the allfreshman team. Egler is the first Penguin to earn all-league honors in back-to-back seasons, and YSU has had a pair of all-leaguers in each of the past two years. YSU is one of only two league teams (Valpo is the other) to have a player rank in the top five in the Horizon League in all six major categories kills, assists, digs, blocks, aces and hitting percentage. PROGRAM CONTINUES TO RISE Youngstown State is enjoying one of its best three-year runs in program history. The Penguins are 47-42 since Mark Hardaway took over prior to the 2012 season, and they have recorded three straight winning seasons for the first time in program history. Prior to going 15-14 in 2012, YSU had not posted a wining record since 1999. The Penguins were 7-51 combined in the two years prior to his arrival, and the team s two seniors (Lexi Egler and Shannon Watson) were freshmen on the 2011 team that went 5-24. YSU has won 19 Horizon League matches over the last three years after having 20 in its first 11 years combined in the conference. Youngstown State has also qualified for the Horizon League Tournament in each of the last three seasons and earned a spot in the semifinals for the first time in 2013. ANOTHER IMMEDIATE REMATCH Youngstown State is playing the same team in the first round of the conference tournament that it ended the regular season with for the second straight season. YSU lost in four sets to Cleveland State on Friday to set up the No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup to start the tournament. The Penguins are hoping that recent history repeats itself. After being swept by Green Bay in the 2013 regular-season finale, YSU beat the Phoenix in five sets in the conference tournament in Milwaukee. Youngstown State and Cleveland State played back-to-back in 2007, and the Vikings won both of those matches. Jeffery, who transferred to YSU in January, helped lead the Penguins to their best regular season in 15 years and their highest finish ever in the Horizon League. Jeffery averaged 10.40 assists, the second-most in program history, while running an efficient offense that posted its best hitting percentage since 1999. Egler was one of only two Horizon League players to register both 300 kills and 300 digs during the regular season, and she ranked fifth in the conference with 346 kills. Also an allleague honoree in 2013, she is just the second Penguin to be named All-Horizon League twice, and she is the first to earn the honor in back-to-back seasons. Brown is YSU s first selection on the All-Freshman Team, which was instituted a year ago. She led the Horizon League with 40 aces, and she had 38 more kills than any other league freshman. She was one of only two league freshmen to post both 200 kills and 200 digs. YSU has now had a pair of All-Horizon League honorees in back-to-back seasons, and Penguins have received all-league recognition five times in the last three years. There were only three YSU honorees in the school s first 11 years in the conference. YSU VS. THE TOURNAMENT FIELD Youngstown State beat three of the other five teams in the field during the regular season, and it was very competitive with the other two. The Penguins swept sixth-seeded UIC while earning splits with No. 2 Milwaukee and No. 5 Cleveland State. YSU was up 2-0 at Oakland before losing in five sets on Oct. 25 when the teams were tied for the Horizon League s top record. YSU took just one set off Valparaiso in two meetings but scored at least 22 points in three of the lost sets.

COACH HARDAWAY Mark Hardaway came to Youngstown State with an extensive background in winning, and it hasn t taken long for him to immediately turn the Penguins into a team to be reckoned with in the Horizon League. In just two seasons, Hardaway has led a complete turnaround. The Penguins have posted back-to-back winning records for the first time since 1998-99, and they ve had their two best seasons in the Horizon League under Hardaway. This year, Hardaway earned his 200th victory as a head coach in the season opener against Evansville. In 2013, his second season, Hardaway led the Penguins to 16-15 overall mark and a school best 7-7 record in Horizon League play. YSU earned a berth in the conference tournament for the second straight season, and it advanced to the tournament semifinals for the first time since joining the conference in 2001. The Penguins beat regional rivals Kent State, Akron and Cleveland State in the same year for the first time in school history, and they added a win over Robert Morris to go 5-0 against teams located within 75 miles of campus. Hardaway led YSU to a 15-14 record YSU in his first season, which was the program's best mark in 13 years. The Penguins won more matches in 2012 than they did in their previous three seasons combined, and their 10-win improvement tied for the 10th-best improvement in the country. Further, their 99- spot improvement in the RPI was 15th-best in the country. Hardaway came to Youngstown State having been on the bench for 344 victories at the Division I level. He was most recently an assistant at Bowling Green, and he spent his career developing ties in Ohio and throughout the Midwest. Hardaway Timeline 1987 Assistant, Missouri Southern State 1988 Assistant, Pittsburg State 1989-90 Head Coach, Defiance College 1991-92 Assistant, Bowling Green 1993-94 Head Coach, Western Kentucky 1995-02 Head Coach, Evansville 2004-11 Assistant, Bowling Green 2012-14 Head Coach, Youngstown State GUINS WERE REGULAR PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK WINNERS Youngstown State led the Horizon League with four different Penguins earning conference player-of-the-week awards during the 2014 season. YSU had an honoree five times, which was second in the league to only Valparaiso. Libero Nikki Thompson was twice named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week (on Aug. 25 and Oct. 6), and Shannon Watson (Sept. 1) and Aly Ryan (Oct. 20) were also defensive players of the week. YSU claimed four of the league s 13 weekly defensive awards. Val Jeffery shared the league s Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 6. PENGUINS RANKED 161ST IN RPI The Youngstown State volleyball team is ranked 161st in the latest release of the NCAA s RPI. The Penguins are fourth among Horizon League teams (Milwaukee is 99, Valparaiso is 115 and Oakland is 119). According to the RPI, YSU s best victory so far is against 56thranked Virginia. Youngstown State was 193rd in the RPI last year and 201st in 2012. That s a monumental improvement from the 300 ranking in 2011, which was the year prior to head coach Mark Hardaway s arrival and the freshman season for Lexi Egler and Shannon Watson. EGLER AMONG YSU S ALL-TIME BEST Youngstown State senior outside hitter Lexi Egler will go down as one of the top six-rotation players in program history. Egler is one of only five players in program history to record both 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. She reached both milestones in YSU s match at Valpo on Oct. 3. Vickie Robinson was the previous Penguin to reach the milestone in 199. She is one of only four Penguins with back-to-back seasons with 300 kills and 300 digs. Egler is one of only two Penguins with four consecutive 200/200 seasons. Egler will finish her career ranking fourth in program history in kills with 1,135, and she is currently 11th in career digs. BROWN S 200/200 RARE FOR FRESHMAN Freshman outside hitter Sam Brown has shown the potential to be a star for the duration of her Penguins career. The Chicago native finished the regular season with 275 kills and 237 digs, making her one of only two YSU freshmen in the last 10 seasons to reach 200 of each current senior Lexi Egler is the other. Brown s 275 kills are the fifth-most by a freshman in program history, and her 40 aces are the second-most by a freshman. Brown was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team after leading the circuit in aces and having 38 more kills than any other freshman in the league. JEFFERY EMERGES AS QUALITY SETTER Val Jeffery s emergence as YSU s starting setter has been a main storyline this season. Jeffery transferred to Youngstown State from High Point in January and won a fierce battle with teammate and close friend Jessie Gerig in camp to earn the starting spot. Jeffery made four all-tournament teams during the non-conference season and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Belmont Invitational. She went on to be named the Horizon League Setter of the Year. Jeffery ranked fourth in the Horizon League during the regular season with 10.40 assists per set, which is the most by a YSU setter since 2005 and the eighth-best mark in school history. Jeffery s 1,040 total assists are the ninth-most in program history. The Penguins.220 attack percentage is their best since 1999, and their 13.01 kills per set are the most since 2007. In addition to averaging 10.58 assists per set, Jeffery is also averaging 0.55 blocks, 0.96 kills and 2.33 digs per set. Her blocks per set average is the highest by a Penguins setter in school history, and Karla Everhart is the only setter to average more kills per set (in 2008 and 2006).

UPCOMING MILESTONES Sam Brown Needs 25 kills to reach 300, 13 digs to reach 250 and 8 blocks to reach 50. Lexi Egler Needs 33 digs to move into the top 10 in school history for career digs... Her record-breaking dig came at Green Bay on Nov. 8 as part of a career-best 30-digs effort. In her first season serving as the Penguins libero, she is averaging an impressive 4.57 digs per set for the year and 4.58 digs per set against league teams. Thompson s 4.58 digs per set average is the second-best for a season for school history, behind on Jill Raslevich s nation-leading 4.95 digs per set in 1995. Thompson had 310 digs in 185 sets over the first two years of her career for an average of 1.68 per set. Those 30 digs at Green Bay are tied for the second-most for a Penguin since rally scoring began in 2001, and her 27 digs at Valparaiso on Oct. 3 are the second-most by a YSU player in a four-set match since 2001. WATSON, RYAN AMONG LEAGUE S TOP BLOCKERS Youngstown State middle blockers Shannon Watson and Aly Ryan rank second and third, respectively, in the Horizon League in blocks, and the Penguins are the conference s top blocking team for the second straight season. Watson tied for the league lead in total blocks with 123, and her 1.1 blocks per set were second only to Kelsey Victor from Valparaiso s 1.4 per set. Ryan was third in the league with 112 total blocks and 1.01 blocks per set. Both Watson and Ryan are moving up the program s all-time blocking list. Watson ranks eighth in school history with 328 total blocks, and she s sixth with 297 block assist. Ryan is right behind her in both categories with 317 total blocks and 295 block assists. Ryan s average of 1.00 blocks per set is the fifth-best mark in program history. A NICE SHOWING IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY Youngstown State ended its non-conference schedule with a 9-6 record, which was the second-best mark in the Horizon League. Among the victories were three wins over Missouri Valley Conference teams, a road win over a Belmont team that won 19 matches a year ago and a win over Virginia for the program s first defeat of an ACC school in 12 years. YSU was 6-0 for the first time in program history and had its best record through 12 matches since 1995 at 9-3.
