Perth Game Fishing Club Inc Postal Address: PO Box 57 North Beach 6920 President: Ben Weston 0419 777720 Perth Game Fishing Club 2015 www.pgfc.com.au contact@pgfc.com.au 9 th October 2015 IN THIS EDITION: Season over results to be announced at Presentation Dinner. Snapper taking over where salmon left off in Cockburn Sound. YFT showing up. Fishing Local The 2015 club year has closed and the Club Championship points calculated. A flurry of activity in the last couple of weeks leading up to year end on 30 th September, saw big salmon schools closely attended by sharks in the Mewstone area. They became a frenetic target of club members trying to capture the fish that would have them winning the year end trophy. The usual suspects were out there and were joined by a few newbies all with the same focus. Good fun, good fishing and all in the spirit of clean competition. The run of salmon has been somewhat superseded by the snapper pre-spawning run, with most snapper anglers bagging out in their favourite spots with this iconic species. We may not have billfish all year round off the Perth coast, but we certainly have a great variety of other species to chase all year round. But it hasn t just been snapper. Gabriel Gomez was out fishing off Hillarys for pinkies when he saw this 40kg yellowfin tuna swim past on the surface. They quickly threw out some cubes while he ripped his snapper rig up from the bottom. After quickly cutting off the sinker and putting a whole mulie on the single 3/0, he cast out for a quick hook-up on what he considers one of his most memorable fish. Long time since I have been on the rod and I haven't felt this excited on a fish for a long time. There is a rumour that a similar fish was caught off the bottom out from Fremantle last week. Hopefully a sign of good things to come early in the season. 9 th October 2015 Hook-Up Page 1

President Ben Weston took father-in-law Greg Meldrum out for his birthday snapper fishing with Al Bevan on Shikari Charters along with club members Dave Gray, Rick Ashton, Nick Lorenz and Dean Rundell. They had a great day out catching some great pink snapper. Birthday boy Greg caught a whopping 90cm pinky weighing in at over 10kgs. It was a great fish and well worth getting a group together if you want to learn how to fish soft plastics. If anyone is keen to come out please contact Ben 0419 Greg Meldrum s 90 cm snapper 777720 as he is keen to go out again and learn some more. Al is a very experienced skipper and the first spot we fished on sunrise produced the goods with the other birthday boy Dean hooking a nice fish and a few others lost due to the ground they were fishing. A great day out with a really good bunch of guys. Garden Island Past President Rhyss Whittred penned this item after a torrid week of afternoon and evening fishing around Garden Island. Having some good weather around during September and the ease of having Ashram based at Cockburn Power Boat Association made the decision to target snapper over at Garden Island an easy one. We would pop down to the Club at lunchtime, load up and put the boat in a pen until we knocked off work. 15 minutes steaming to the other side of Garden Island put us in the right area and a quick sound around to locate the schools with anchor laid was a pleasure. We found a lot of good schools but over time learnt that snapper schools near reef ledges generally resulted in us getting busted off on the reefs with that initial run at hook up. Finding a school on the flatter limestone ground and fish that schooled near the bottom it appeared they seemed to feed more actively than those that were higher up the water column. We started off bait fishing with conventional 20 pound braid but fishing for snapper became quite easy and over the next few trips we used 3, 4 and 6kg mono for those that joined us from PGFC and wanted to tag for some points. Dave from Taylor s and industry friends that came out all enjoyed either their first or biggest snapper caught. Lukas first snapper Good mates Ryan, Frank, Dave and Regan took it to the next level and we purely fished soft plastics, fine tuning retrieve techniques for catching and releasing fish. Sinking fly lines Frank s brace of snapper Ben bagging out 9 th October 2015 Hook-Up Page 2

on 9 and 10 weight rods with 8 kg tippet became the next project and many snapper to 8kg were caught. It was now time to introduce some juniors to the fun and those lovely balmy afternoon/ evenings allowed us the opportunity to get a couple of 6 year olds, Ben and Lukas out to thrill them with their chance to catch fish. Both lads did well and caught a couple each but the size of the fish and size of them required a little help from one of us. Nevertheless the excitement and smiles on their faces will never be forgotten and the fishing bug has definitely bitten these two. Heading North Not so far north, but definitely warmer than Perth, keen pair Steve Ducas and Lisa Powell headed for one of their favourite beach fishing haunts, Horrocks Beach, nestled on the coast just on 500 km from Perth. This is a great getaway destination when there is a preference to get off the water for a change. Among other catches was this nice 5kg mulloway for Lisa. Record Membership The club has set yet another membership milestone. The final membership number for the year ending 30 th September 2015 was 366! In a value conscious climate when many other clubs are struggling to attract and retain members, PGFC continues to grow, with already 6 new members for 2016. Target for 2016 is 400 members - do your bit to help increase our numbers. Calendar Changes and updates may occur, check the website and click on Events for details. October Fri 16 Annual Presentation Dinner RPYC Crawley November Tue 10 Sat 14 Sat Sun 21-22 December Annual General Meeting and Social Night FAD Deployment Opening Weekend RPYC Fremantle DPI Fremantle Rottnest Island Tue 1 Annual Christmas Social Night RPYC Fremantle History of Hook-Up The first issue of Hook-Up was sent to members under the banner Newsflash on 28 th January 2003. On 15 th November 2003 it was renamed, at the suggestion of Kay Webber, as Hook-Up. At the time of the first single page edition there were only 20 or so members that had email addresses. This issue of Hook-Up will go to well over 300 addresses with only around 10 members now not having an email address. During the past 12½ years contributions have come from a huge number of members for the benefit of all. The objective of Hook-Up has always been to inform members of what is happening on the local game fishing scene, club goings-on and the activities of likeminded members. At a guess there has been around 300 separate Hook-Ups circulated. The future of Hook-Up is sound, but it does rely on members being its primary news source, so keep the information coming through, however small. Future issues will include extracts from past publications. Next Issue The next issue of Hook-Up will come out following the Presentation Night and will include all scores and trophy winners for 2015. There s also an item on the Monte Bellos and whatever else comes in during the week. 9 th October 2015 Hook-Up Page 4
