REPORTS
Chariho Regional School District Calendar Subcommittee Minutes of July 20,2017 Administration Building Conference Room DRAFT Present: Catherine Giusti, Craig Lauzon, Barry Ricci, Jane Daly, Diane McKeen I. Call to Order: Catherine called the meeting to order at 5:03 pm. II. Approval of Minutes of May 23, 2017: Craig made a motion to accept the minutes. Catherine seconded. Vote approved 2-0. III. Scope of Responsibility: Barry and Catherine reminded attendees that the scope of responsibility is to examine the Student's School Year Calendar, which still requires consultation with the Union (per contract). This includes holidays, school vacations, and start date. IV. Developing Calendar Options The Committee reviewed 2017-2018 calendars for our regional partner district's: Westerly, NK, SK, Narragansett, EWG, Jamestown, and Chariho. Catherine also distributed the State of Rhode Island Public School Calendar summation for 2016-2017. Craig summarized that of the seven communities, four still participate with a week-long February Winter Break, three do not. Westerly and Jamestown have President's Day (Monday) and Tuesday off, North Kingstown has no students (but a professional day) on the Friday before the holiday, and then the Monday holiday off. Barry said he consistently hears from the community that they want to start after Labor Day, and shorten February vacation. If we were to do that, we need to find extra days during the school year to make-up the time. From a past survey of parents, Catherine said that 33% wanted to see February vacation go away, and 33% wanted to see it shortened. Overwhelmingly, the Chariho community wanted to see a change about the February vacation. Barry pointed out that Bristol-Warren combines winter and spring vacations into one week in March. Diane said what she heard the most, was to be as consistent as possible as surrounding districts, as teachers have their own child care to contend with. Diane also said her members say they would prefer to come in for the Staff Orientation Day on a Monday, before students start on the Tuesday. Barry would like us to consider the best calendar for the students. Committee members also discussed the need to give advance notice and time for all stakeholders to plan if a change in the school calendar is made. Catherine said if we were to look at a calendar that starts Tuesday after Labor Day, then we need to really make a change to one of the two school vacations. Barry reminded the group that we can also keep the current calendar. Craig made a motion to have a shorter February break and a later start to the school year, which was seconded by Catherine. Vote was approved 2-0. V. Next Steps: Catherine will invite our regional partner districts to attend a meeting on September 20, 2017 at 6:00pm to discuss developing a common calendar, and that Chariho is considering a shorter February break and a later start to the school year. VI. Future Meeting Dates: Next Meeting- Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at 6:00pm, CHS Library VII. Adjourn: Craig motioned to adjourn, Catherine seconded. It was unanimous, the meeting adjourned at 5:50pm. Vote approved 2-0. Submitted by: Jane L. Daly
