100 THE 1916 CENTENNIAL 2016 FALCON MEN S BASKETBALL THE CENTENNIAL SEASON The 2015-16 season will be one of celebration for the Bowling Green State University men s basketball program, as the Falcons will be competing in their 100th year of intercollegiate basketball in Bowling Green, Ohio. Sponsoring a men s basketball team for the first time in 1915-16, Bowling Green State University played its first game on Jan. 8, 1916 versus what is now Eastern Michigan University. The Normals or Teachers, the Falcons nickname until 1927, lost the game 33-15. However, BGSU, who was coached by F.G. Beyerman and led by team captain Charles Branigan, would go on to win its first home game five days later on Jan. 13 with a 26-10 win over Defiance. Heading into the Centennial Season in 2015-16, the men s basketball program has posted 1,321 wins, tallied 53 winning seasons, made 21 national tournament postseason appearances, totaled 13 different 20-win seasons, captured nine MAC Championship Teams and made thousands of lifelong Falcon alums, supporters and fans over the last 100 years. A total of over 50 former Falcons have moved on to either play or coach at the professional level, while 43 former men s basketball student-athletes are in the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame. The Falcons have produced 86 All-MAC selections, 27 NBA and ABA draft selections, 13 national All-Americans, while a total of 42 players have scored over 1,000 career points for the Orange and Brown. A FALCON WIN WOULD... * Put the Falcons at 11-4 overall on the season for the second straight year. * Mean that BGSU started the MAC season off at 2-0 for the second straight year. * Place the Falcons at 7-1 overall on the year at home in the Stroh Center. * Hand the Falcons a 3-0 record for the month of January. * Give BGSU a three-game winning streak over Central Michigan. * Extend BGSU s current winning streak to four straight games. * Increase the Falcons home game winning streak to six straight games. LAST TIME OUT - BGSU 73, MIAMI (OHIO) 62 (JAN. 6) Bowling Green State University head coach Michael Huger and the Falcons picked up their first Mid-American Conference (MAC) win of the season with a 73-62 win over Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday night in the two teams MAC opener at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Falcons used stingy defense, which recorded nine steals and eight blocks, and an 11-1 run in the second half to pull away from the RedHawks for the double digit win. BGSU held Miami to just 34.3 percent shooting (23-of-67) overall, including forcing the visitors in red to go just 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from behind the three-point line, while the Falcons shot 44 percent (23-of-67) for the game. While Miami made more field goals (23) than the Falcons (22), BGSU drained three more three-pointers than the RedHawks for the game and took advantage of the free throw line where the home team was 24-of-30 (80 percent) on the night. In fact, BGSU made more free throws (24) than the RedHawks shot (22) for the contest. FALCONS PICKED AS A WILDCARD SELECTION VERSUS EMU ON JAN. 16 The Mid-American Conference office has announced that Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN) has selected the cross-divisional contest between Bowling Green State University and Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 16, as its MAC Wildcard selection. The game time will now be 2 p.m. ET at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, Mich. The MAC clash on Jan. 16 will be broadcast live by BCSN, Time Warner Cable Sports and ESPN3. HUGER FIRST BGSU first-year head coach Michael Huger picked up his first MAC win as a coach with the Falcons 73-62 home win over Miami (Ohio) in the two teams conference opener on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Stroh Center. FALCONS SUCCESS IN RECENT MAC OPENERS The Falcons have gone 9-3 overall in their last 12 Mid-American Conference openers, including snapping a two-year losing skid last year with a 66-64 win at Kent State in the conference opener. With their home win in the MAC opener over Miami (Ohio) on Jan. 6, 2016, the Falcons have won back-to-back conference opening contests over the last two years. STROLL DOWN THE MAC MEMORY LANE Last season in 2014-15, BGSU went 11-7 in MAC play and finished in third-place overall in the East Division. Since winning the MAC East in 2008-09 with an 11-5 conference record, the Falcons have been over.500 in MAC play just twice, going 11-7 last season and then posting an 9-7 overall record in league play in 2011-12. Since 2009-10, including this year, Bowling Green has gone 48-53 in MAC play overall. NON-CONFERENCE WINS The Falcons finished their non-conference regular season slate with a 9-4 record this season. The nine non-conference wins, not including postseason play, are the most by a Falcons team in a single season since posting 10 non-conference wins in 2006-07. BGSU won eight non-conference games, not counting postseason wins in the MAC Tournament or the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), last year. CONSISTENCY ACROSS THE STARTING FIVE BGSU head coach Michael Huger has sent out the lineup of David Pep Joseph, Zack Denny, Wes Alcegaire, Spencer Parker and Rasheed Worrell to start all 14 games thus far this season for the Falcons. Page 4 @BGSUMHoops www.bgsufalcons.com

I GOT 10 NEXT The Falcons have had four different players grab 10 rebounds or more this season. Zack Denny has pulled down 10 rebounds or more five times this season, while Spencer Parker has hauled in 10 rebounds or more three times. Over the last two games, Ismail Ali tallied 10 rebounds versus Oakland City (Ind.) on Jan. 8, while Demajeo Wiggins snatched 11 rebounds in the Falcons home game against Miami (Ohio) on Jan. 6. The video was featured nationally in a variety of places, including ESPN. com, and has been viewed well over 200,000 times. BILL FRACK LEAVES A LEGACY AT BGSU The generosity of Findlay native William Frack will always be remembered, as the value of his gift to the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, benefiting the Bowling Green State University men s basketball program and community needs in Hancock County, nearly doubled to about $20 million since it was initially announced in 2011. Frack, representatives of the Community Foundation, and BGSU announced the increased endowment at a news conference in Findlay on April 9, 2014. According to Community Foundation President Katherine Kreuchauf, three-quarters of the annual distributions from the series of existing trusts will go to the BGSU s men s basketball program. The remaining proceeds will support the community needs in Hancock County. Frack, who followed BGSU basketball for more than six decades, had his father bring him to watch the Falcons play in 1948 in the old Men s Gym for the very first time, and he remained a devoted fan until his passing in the summer of 2014. Many of my fondest memories revolve around BGSU basketball, Frack said at the April press conference. I want to give back to the program that has meant so much to me and to the community I ve called home. The gift is one of the largest ever to the Community Foundation. The endowment will be the single, largest private gift in BGSU s history. BGSU is truly blessed to have a friend like Bill Frack, said BGSU President Mary Ellen Mazey in April 2014. Bill s generosity will allow us to give our coaches and student-athletes the resources they need to excel and compete at the highest levels. I can t emphasize enough what Bill s passion and generosity means for our program, said Chris Kingston, BGSU director of athletics at the time of the announcement. This endowment literally is a game changer. It is the last piece of the puzzle for us to begin a new era of men s basketball in the Stroh Center. This was not the first time Frack s generosity touched BGSU. In 2008, he provided one of the leadership gifts to help start the Stroh Center, the University s arena and convocation center that opened in 2011. The court in the Stroh Center is named after Bill Frack. Page 13 @BGSUMHoops www.bgsufalcons.com

RECORD AT BGSU Year MAC Overall 2015-16 1-0 10-4 Head Coach BGSU HUGER FILE 2015-present Assistant Coach Miami (Fla.) 2011-15 Assistant Coach George Mason 2007-11 Assistant Coach Longwood (Va.) 2005-07 Professional Player 1993-2005 (Finland, Holland, Belgium) BGSU Player 1989-93 * Two-time All-MAC * Runner-Up - MAC Player of the Year, 1993 ON THE BENCH HEAD COACH MICHAEL HUGER A 1994 graduate of BGSU, Michael Huger was named the 17th head men s basketball coach on April 17, 2015. Huger, who returns to his alma mater where he was a standout player for the Falcons from 1989-93, most recently wrapped up his fourth season at the University of Miami and his eighth season as an assistant coach for head coach Jim Larrañaga, whom he played for at BGSU. Overall, Huger brings 10 seasons of collegiate coaching experience and nearly a dozen years of professional basketball experience with him back to Bowling Green. Having joined the Miami staff in April 2011, Huger helped the Canes to a total of 91 wins over the last four seasons, including posting a program record 29 wins in the 2012-13 season, 25 wins this past season and 20 wins in 2011-12. Overall, the Canes posted four straight winning seasons during his time on the sidelines at The U. In 2014-15, Huger helped to guide Miami to the 2015 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Championship Game at Madison Square Garden and to an overall record of 25-13, with the 25 wins being the second most all-time in school history. On the season, the Canes defeated three nationally ranked top 25 teams at No. 8/7 Florida, vs. No. 24/25 Illinois and at No. 4/4 Duke with two of those wins over ranked opponents coming on the road for the first time since 1998-99. Prior to assisting Miami to a 17-16 overall record in 2013-14 after losing all five of its starters from a championship team the previous season, Huger and the Canes played in the Sweet 16 after earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13. Miami was the ACC regular season and tournament champion, earned a No. 2 ranking in both national polls and won a school-record 29 games, including 15 conference victories. He helped lead Miami to four 20+ point wins over ACC opponents, including a 27-point rout of No. 1 Duke and victories against North Carolina (+26), Florida State (+24) and Boston College (+22). In his first season with the Canes in 2011-12, Huger aided Miami in winning nine conference games, en route to finishing tied for fourth place in the ACC. It was the first time the team posted a winning record in the ACC since the program s first season in the league in 2004-05, and it was the highest the team had ever finished in the final regular season standings before receiving an NIT postseason bid. Before following Larrañaga to Miami, Huger spent four seasons at George Mason where he helped lead the Patriots to the postseason every year -- including NCAA berths in 2008 and 2011. In 2011, the team defeated Villanova to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, earned a regular-season CAA title and posted a school-record tying 27 wins. In 2009, he helped Mason to an NIT bid and its second-straight 20-win season, and in 2008, Huger helped the Patriots to their second-highest win total in school history as they beat nationallyranked Kansas State and won the CAA title for the first time since 2001. Huger began his coaching career at Longwood University (Va.) where he spent two season under Mike Gillian, a former George Mason and BGSU assistant coach under Larrañaga. Before joining the coaching ranks, Huger played professional basketball in Europe, spending time in Finland (1992-94), two years in Holland (1994-96) and nine in Belgium (1996-2005). He was selected Dutch League MVP in 1996 after averaging 25.3 points and 5.8 assists, and went on to earn first team All-Belgium honors in 2000 and 2004 after leading his clubs to Belgium Cup championships in both seasons. A native of New York City, Huger is a 1994 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a bachelor s degree in education. He played for Larrañaga from 1989-93, helping the Falcons to a pair of NIT appearances. Tabbed the BGSU Team MVP in 1992-93, he earned Mid-American Conference All-Conference honors in his final two seasons, and was a Naismith Award nominee and the runner-up for MAC Player of the Year as a senior. As a prep player, he helped lead Stevenson High School (Bronx) to back-to-back PSAL City Championships in 1988 and 1989. He played AAU ball for the famous Riverside Church Hawks.
