What is Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)? Not a Bacteria (like ear infection, or food poisoning) Not a Virus (HIV or a cold) Probably: a badly behaved protein, a broken cellular machine, a prion https://www.providr.com/zombie disease/

CWD Prion https://doctorspiller.com/alzheimers disease/ https://www.the scientist.com/?articles.view/articleno/38721/title/the Bright Side of Prions/

Fall 2017: 7 CWD positive deer in Cedar Valley Discovered by deer death (BAH inspection leg. audit) How did the CWD get there? Taxidermy? How long has the CWD been there? (2+ years?) Fence has been damaged for years Passed BAH inspection (for years)!!! Prediction: Fall 18 unlimited shooting in the red circle 2018 Legislature accomplished: NOTHING!!!

CWD kills cervids. Can CWD kill you? In humans, the prion disease is called Variant Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (vcjd). Deer (CWD) prion are not human (vcjd) prion. Local nurse (and hunter) told me the late stage vcjd symptoms are basically the same as brain cancer (hospice). It is believed that cow prion disease (Mad Cow) can lead to vcjd in humans. But, no observed transmission from deer (CWD) to humans (vcjd) But, Macaque monkeys, genetically very close to humans, develop CWD/vCJD when fed equivalent of one 7oz steak per month We ll know in 30 years. https://www.webmd.com/brain/mad cow disease basics https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/10/6/03 1082_article https://www.cdc.gov/prions/cwd/transmission.html

How do you clean prion off your knife? The WHO suggests: 1hr in bleach and then 1 hr in 121C autoclave 15psi in a pressure cooker yields ~121C Note! Instant pot is ~12psi, not good enough. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/prion#sterilization

So, if your deer is positive, throw away your knife, and your table, and your sink, and your hands Do the nice people at Ledebuhr bleach and autoclave their knives between each deer? xoooo 5 oooxo 2 So, on average oxooo 4 oooox 1 ooxoo 3 (1+2+3+4+5)/5 = 3 contaminated deer Conclusion: If any of the deer at a processor are CWD positive, on average, half of the deer at that processor are CWD contaminated.

Transmission: Prions are indestructible, don t move them! Prions are present in: Carcass, saliva, manure, urine So, DON T FEED DEER (slobber on the corn/salt lick transmits prion) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6htyddpyks

2010 2013 CWD prevalence near Madison, Wisconsin. 2017 data shows the same trend. 9 of 11 mineral (salt) licks showed CWD prion in the soil around the lick! https://phys.org/news/2018 05 cwd prions soilwisconsin mineral.html

Transmission: Prions are indestructible, don t move them! Prions are present in: Carcass, saliva, manure, urine So, DON T MOVE CARCASSES MN DNR: bone out meat

Transmission: Prions are indestructible, don t move them! Prions are present in: Carcass, saliva, manure, urine So, DON T FEED DEER (slobber on the salt/corn lick) DON T MOVE CARCASSES DON T LET DEER PEE IN YOUR GARDEN DON T LET DEER PEE ON THE OATS YOUR CHEERIOS ARE MADE FROM

Plants can transmit prion. CWD Liquid on plant leaves CWD Liquid on soil, plants pull CWD from soil Hamsters eat prion containing plants

So, another reason to be mad at the deer. They re transmitting an incurable brain disease! If there are fewer deer, transmission might be stopped controlled! Note, this is how your body controls infections

Data from the MN DNR: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/cwdcheck/index.html#results TEST YOUR DEER! Zone 346: 2909 deer registered, 291 tested. Is the CWD free label really valid?

How do deer migrate? Half stick around, half disperse. Note the long tail.

How do deer migrate? Half stick around, half disperse. Note the long tail.

Defensive Summary: Shoot all the deer you can. Test them for CWD (only 10% of people do this!) Butcher deer yourself, isolate or autoclave knives. Build an 8 fence around your garden. Call General Mills and ask how they re testing incoming grain for CWD prion. Call your legislature rep and ask why they didn t do anything about CWD this spring. Or: Policy idea, $5000 bounty per CWD positive deer. Target field, $350M public money.

Offensive Public Policy (via Mike Foy, WI DNR staff) $5000 bounty per CWD positive deer. Normal deer license procedure. There are about 18 deer/mi^2 in WI, 10 deer/mi^2 in MN MN: 86,943 mi^2 *10deer/mi^2 *0.1% infection rate = ~= 870 CWD+ deer ~= $4.3 million WI: 65,498 mi^2 * 18deer/mi^2 * 5% infection rate = ~= 58,000 CWD+ deer ~= $290 million The Milwaukee Bucks stadium subsidy was $250 million.
