We are so excited to announce that we have 20 teams signed up for Battle of the Books! The children have decided on some incredibly creative team names and are reading up a storm. Our brilliant BOB parent volunteers (Heather Fraser, Rebecca Johns, Sandra Heldman, Suzie Clapp, Maryse Roy, Amber Shron, and Jennifer Steckel Elliot) have made it through their books and compiled their questions. We all agree, there have been some excellent reads this year. Battles started Wednesday, March 30th @ 8am in the library. A schedule is posted outside the school office, and the French room. An announcement was made Thursday morning regarding the first six teams to play Wednesday morning at 8am. Announcements will continue to be made daily for the next day s battles. We will work closely with the teachers to ensure there are as few conflicts as possible - but these kids are busy! The line up for Wednesday, March 30th at 8am will be as follows: Fluffy Chickens from Snortlington vs. Da Churos What??? vs. Raptor Readers The Sparkly Electricats vs. The Guardians of the Funky Whalez All teams are to meet in the library first. Please arrive on time so that we can review the rules and get started promptly. Kathy Clarke, Jeffrey Winter and The BOB Team of Volunteers After Four Spring Registration is open and spaces are filling up quickly! Please see the attached flyer for the entire list of programs available for your child(ren) to enjoy in the comfort of Whitney Public School, during after school hours, run by Mooredale. Tuesday April 12 th, 2016 7pm Whitney Jr. Public School 119 Rosedale Heights Dr. RSVP whitney@ tdsb.on.ca What Every Parent Should Know about Concussions The Importance of School Based Programs for Concussion Education, Management and Prevention Many children and adolescents sustain concussions, and schools are now taking steps to educate students and their parents about concussion management and prevention. Fortunately, with good management most students respond well. This talk will cover the essentials of diagnosis and treatment of concussions and provide tips about prevention. A small donation to Parachute Canada would be greatly appreciated www.parachutecanada.org Dr. Charles H Tator, PhD, MD Since the early 1970s, Dr. Charles Tator has had a resounding impact on spinal cord injury research, prevention and treatment, and on training our next generation of leading surgical scientists. An eminent scientist, neurosurgeon, professor and administrator, his laboratory was the first in Canada to study acute spinal cord injury from a basic science perspective. Dr. Tator s research transformed our world s understanding of spinal cord injury and, in 1978, he developed one of the first experimental models of spinal cord injury in small laboratory animals. Dr. Charles Tator is currently the Project Director of the Canadian Sports Concussion Project at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre, Toronto Western Hospital. From 1983 to 1988, he was head of the neurosurgery division at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and served as director of the Toronto Hospital Neurosciences Centre. From 1990 to 1999, he was associate director of the Playfair Neuroscience Unit at the Toronto Hospital and he was chairman of the neurosurgery division at the University of Toronto from 1989 to 1999. The Integra Program of the Child Development Institute, in partnership with the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario, is presenting an online workshop to help parents navigate the school system. The course is called Partnering with Schools for Student Success, and promotes a collaborative approach to advocacy, based on knowledge and understanding of both sides. The course is moderated by Kate Cressman, Community Education and Engagement facilitator with the Integra Program of the Child Development Institute, and Diane Wagner, Public Policy & Education Consultant at LDAO. This course may be of particular interest to families in service at Integra or on the waitlist for Integra services. Please see the attached flyer for more information..
