Land of Lincoln Quarter Horse Association Cheryl LaMaster, Editor 230 Woodland Hills Rd. Batavia, IL 60510 clamaste@fnal.gov 630-482-9774 LOG LINES Feb./Mar. 2011 Did you miss your ballot for 2011 officers? We didn t have a nomination meeting, usually held in November. We did nominations at the banquet since quite a few people attended. Your ballot will come in the mail if you receive your Lincoln Log electronically. If you are reading the printed version, your ballot should have come with it. Members who live outside the original boundaries do receive a different ballot since they do not have area directors. Remember, in the area director section, vote only for the officers and your area don t vote for those other area directors. Return your ballots postmarked by March 12th. How was the big snow in your area? Where I live, we got 20-24 inches. The early Feb. Gordyville shows were cancelled due to the weather. Mary Hannagan said the drifts along the side of the building were pretty high! I missed the whole thing! I left for a vacation in Aruba the day of the storm. I think my flight was one of the last ones to leave O Hare that day. By the time I got back on Feb. 12th, much of the snow had melted. I saw plenty of pictures on Facebook, compliments of my son and friends. They kept sending reports with the temperature and wind chill. Of course, I had to rub it in a little and send them Aruba information sonny, 83 degrees, wind chill of 79, no snow, no shoveling, etc. February Gordyville shows Lots of novice youth entries! Pretty good turnout considering the time of year. People from Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana (and of course Illinois) trying for points and circuit awards. Makayla Maciejewski and Will Be Hot Sizzlin won Novice youth hunter under saddle under one judge. Diane Stewart and One Krymsum Legacy had a good weekend in Novice amateur hunter under saddle and Novice amateur showmanship. Alyssa Lombardi and RL a Sudden Attitude won Novice youth trail on Friday. Diane Conover s mare A Classical Creation was grand amateur mare and open grand mare on Friday. Kaitlynn Dudding s mare Truly That Simple was grand youth mare on Friday and reserve youth mare under one judge on Saturday. Kristine Stewart and SF Banker won Novice youth showmanship under one judge on Saturday. Jennifer Wagner won Amateur showmanship under one judge on Saturday. My gosh, Jennifer is an amateur! Alexandra Albright and Lopin in Time won a youth showmanship 13 & under. Cori Flowers won a youth showmanship 14-18. Karoline Stewart and One Krymsum Legacy won Youth performance geldings under both judges on Saturday, and was Youth reserve champion gelding. Echo Fisher and PQH Good N Flashy won Amateur performance mares under one judge. Kristine Stewart and SF Banker placed 1st under one judge in Novice youth western pleasure. Kathy Harper picked up points in Novice amateur western pleasure and Amateur select western pleasure with Icantakeagoodlook. Diane Stewart won a Novice amateur hunter under saddle with One Krymsum Legacy. Cori Flowers and Alyssa Lombardi both won a Youth horsemanship 14-18. Anne Pate and Good Sky Light won a Novice amateur trail. Jim Henrekin s new mare Precious Deductions was Reserve champion mare and Reserve champion amateur mare under one judge. Congratulations to Cori Flowers and Goodbarshandsumasset on winning the Justin Rookie of the Year in 2010. Quite an accomplishment! LeaAnn Koch has several babies on the ground and expecting several more. She ll have many to choose from when it comes time to show in those fall futurities. New AQHA Rules Take a look at the AQHA rule changes effective January 1. More Horses Previously, only two horses could be shown per exhibitor in classes that are worked individually. Beginning January 1, exhibitors can show three horses in individually worked classes. "If the open classes are combined into an all-ages class at a weekend show, then it goes back to four horses total," according to Charlie Hemphill, AQHA senior director of shows and new events. In grouped classes, such as horsemanship, Select exhibitors can show one horse in the amateur class and a different horse in the Select. All-Around Events Cotton or ear plugs in horses' ears will be legal, as well as the use of slip-on easy-care boots. In the past, this decision was left up to the discretion of the judges. "The show committee made the recommendation to allow them, and they are now legal," Hemphill said. Novice youth and novice amateurs are now eligible to show any horse without filling out a novice permit. The novice and the horse's owner can show the same horse at the same show, as long as it's not in that same novice youth or novice amateur class. Reining For reiners, a new pattern has been added to AQHA's approved list. New Class Green jumping is a new class that will follow the rules of AQHA's other green classes. The horses will show at lower heights. Cowboy Mounted Shooting The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association has teamed up with AQHA to allow American Quarter Horse owners to earn points beginning in 2011. A limited number of CMSA shows will have AQHA-approved classes, including Battle in the Saddle, July 4-9 in Oklahoma City. Leasing to Show Beginning in 2011, any youth or amateur exhibitor can lease a horse to show in AQHA events. To show a leased horse, an exhibitor needs two pieces of paper: a showing lease form from AQHA and a copy of the detailed agreement or contract between the horse's owner and the lessee. Some straight talk about phenylbutazone. By Christine Hamilton in The American Quarter Horse Journal Bute is a commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory drug. Phenylbutazone, or bute, belongs to a class of therapeutic medications called nonsterodial anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Aspirin and ibuprofen are other common drugs in this class. Like asprin, bute reduces inflammation and fever and also acts as an analgesic, or pain-reliever. It s also one of the least expensive horse medications on the market. How Does Bute Work? Bute works to reduce inflammation by blocking the effects of prostaglandins, a large group of hormones that act on the body in many ways, including mediating inflammatory response. Bute primarily inhibits an enzyme called cyclo-oxygenase (COX). The COX enzymes metabolize arachindonic acid (a component of the cellular wall) into molecules called eicosanoids. Eicosanoids include prostaglandin molecules, Dr. Cohen explains. By inhibiting COX enzymes from metabolizing prostaglandins, bute reduces the body s ability to produce inflammation. What Do Horse Owners Commonly Misunderstand About Bute? Oddly enough, in Dr. Cohen s opinion, the most common misunderstandings seem to be polar opposites. People fail to recognize the risks of phenylbutazone and assume it s perfectly safe, he says. They don t understand that, although very rarely, horses can become very sick after administration of bute for even a brief course of treatment. Ulcers are a more common reaction horses can develop over time. If they develop ulcerations, Dr. Black says, they might have weight loss or poor hair coat, or show repeated mild signs of colic. When that happens, the first thing we do is take them off medication. Then we will commonly use an anti-ulcerative medication like omeprazole (GastroGard) concurrently with the bute, he says. Even if a horse doesn t have ulcers, Dr. Black will prescribe GastroGard as a precaution. On the other hand, Dr. Cohen continues, people also overestimate the risks. They fail to understand that nearly all treatments carry a certain amount of risk, including bute. Some horses may react strongly to bute, while others may tolerate it over long periods of time. March 4-6, 2011 Top national clinicians join equine educators and 140 vendors offering all things for the equestrian from recreational horsemen to professionals at the 22nd annual Illinois Horse Fair. Produced by Horsemen's Council of Illinois (HCI), the all-breed expo annually attracts more than 10,000 horsemen. In addition to learning training techniques from experts, Horse Fair gives attendees access to unique HorsesForSale aisles, breed and sport demonstrations, Stallion Row and Parade and the All-Youth Horse Judging Trials.
