Got your Brown and wondering how to get to BLACK BELT?? There is a Time in Grade Requirement; You need to maintain continuous membership with Judo NSW and you need to actively participate. The higher the grade the more time you are expected to be in that grade; learning the trade Time in Grade Contest Points and Knowledge 1 st Dan Black Belt 1 Year (150 points) 2 Years (100 points) Service and Knowledge 3 years (150 points) 5 years Knowledge only # You also need to get grading Points. Either by; Competing in Tournaments to get Contest points from wins Batsugun - 5 consecutive Ippon wins in a single tournament against Brown Belts for immediate promotion. Kata Competition Points - Gold, Silver and Bronze medal performance in authorized JFA Nationals, OJU Championships and IJF tournaments. Helping grow your Club, Judo NSW or National organisation to get Service points or a combination of both Contest & Service points You must have a cumulative total of financial years in grade equal to the minimum time in grade requirement. # This method of attaining promotion is very rare and there must be a legitimate reason for not being able to participate in competition or being of service to the sport. You can gain Service Points over time for the following; Administration (Marketing/Admin/Other) Coaching Refereeing Team Management You can accelerate the points with higher responsibility &/or level of organisation Finally you need to demonstrate that you have the Judo Knowledge & skills; You attend the Dan Grading to demonstrate your knowledge and competency with Throwing (Tachi-waza) including combinations & counters, Grappling (Ne-Waza) including turnovers & escapes, Kata, Referee Rules and any other requirements. However, the NCAS points can be claimed only once. Points Scenarios 3 pathways to Black Belt Scenario 1 Tim gains 112 Contest Points over 2 years by participating in 4 (Judo NSW KYU Grade only) tournaments* per year. He averages 4 fights per competition and wins 50% ie 2 wins per competition. Tim has one win against the same grade for waz-ari (7 points each win) and one win against a lower grade for ippon (7 Points) Total 14 Points per Competition. Tim has 112 points (Total Required = 100) so proceeds to the next grading as a Contest Grade Applicant. Scenario 2 - Cathy gains 56 Contest Points in Year 1 then gets injured at training. She decides to get the remaining 94 Points (Total 150) through service contribution to Judo NSW over the next 3 years (Total Time in Grade = 4 Years). She completes an NCAS Club Level Course to get 10 Points (10X3) and helps at the club coaching Juniors adding 5 Service Points (5X3) (Total 45 Service Points over 3 years). She referees 3X per year at local tournaments* gaining her State C Class licence. In year two she is graded to a State B Class gaining another 10 Points per year (Total 25 Service Points over 3 years). To get the remaining Points, Cathy helps with club admin (5 points) and in the following year takes on a club exec role (10X2) (Total 25 Service Points over 3 years). With a Total of 151 points over 4 years, Cathy presents at the next Dan Grading as a Service & Knowledge Grade. Scenario 3 - Max is no longer capable of open age competition but as a Recreational player loves club Judo and Randori. He completes a NCAS Club Level Course and gets 10 Points/year (10X4) and coaches Juniors at the club, adding 5 Service Points per year (5X4) (Total 60 Service Points over 4 years). Max referees 3X per year at local tournaments gaining 5 points with his State C Class licence. In year two he is graded to a State B Class gaining another 10 Points per year (Total 35 Service Points over 4 years). Having more time to help grow the club, Max joins the Club Executive (4X10), and for the remaining points he joins the State Tournament Committee in Year 3 (2X10) (Total 60 Service Points over 4 years). With a Total of 155 points over 4 years, Max also presents at the next Dan Grading as a Service & Knowledge Grade. * Judo NSW and Member Clubs conduct more than 25 tournaments a year approx. 50% of these are regional tournaments Judo NSW 08/02/2018 Page 4 of 4
