DOGS HOST FOURTH-ANNUAL MAGIC CITY CLASSIC The Samford University softball team opens its 2005 home schedule on Saturday as the Bulldogs host the fourth-annual Union State Bank Magic City Classic featuring games against both Birmingham-Southern and UAB at Bulldog Field. Samford (7-6) is scheduled to face off against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers (6-7) at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday followed by a 4 p.m. matchup against the UAB Blazers (8-13). Birmingham-Southern and UAB will open the competition with an 11 a.m. contest. Samford enters Saturday's competition looking to build upon its solid 3-1 performance at the 2005 Comfort Inn Mercer Classic last week. After being held to 15 runs and 33 hits in their first nine games of the season, the Bulldogs exploded for 25 runs and 34 hits in only four games at the three-day tournament held in Macon, Ga. Birmingham-Southern heads into this weekend's competition with a 6-7 overall record on the season, but has recorded all seven of its losses in its previous eight games. UAB has also been on a slide as of late as the Blazers are in the midst of a six-game losing streak. Last week, UAB took part in the 2005 Stanford Invitational and played competitively against some of the nation's top teams. Valley St. 5 WAGNER S WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM DEFEATS MSVU, 9-5 Samford University freshman, Meghan Wagner, blasted a ninth-inning grand slam to lift the Bulldogs to a thrilling 9-5 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 26, at the Comfort Inn Classic hosted by Mercer University in Macon, Ga. The victory was Samford's second of the day after the Bulldogs defeated Southern Miss, 5-2, in the first game. With the pair of wins, Samford improved to a 7-6 overall record on the season. Mississippi Valley State took a one-run lead in the third inning of game two, but Samford rebounded to take the lead in the third inning and held it until the seventh when MVSU tied things up to go into extra innings. The teams battled back and forth in the eighth inning and Mississippi Valley State went up by a run again in the top of the ninth frame. In the bottom of the ninth, Samford's Kelly Smith made it to first on an error when she attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt to send base runner Liz Pearse to third. Shelley Stanley then drew a walk to load the bases and Bethany Weisser put the ball in play to score Pearse, tie the game and eventually loaded the bases for Wagner. With two strikes against Samford's highly-touted freshman from Chico, Calif., Wagner launched her second career grand slam to win the game for the Bulldogs, 9-5. The blast was her second grand slam of the tournament and second in as many days. The Bulldogs registered 12 hits in game two against MVSU. Trisha Holman went 4-for-5 with two RBI and Weisser finished 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI. Junior Emilee Lewis started the game in the circle for the Bulldogs, but left with a no decision. Samford's junior from Vacaville, Calif., pitched seven innings, allowed four hits, three runs, walked two and struck out three. Susanna Meyer relieved Lewis in the eighth inning with the game tied at 3-3. Meyer hurled the final two innings to take the victory, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. The Bulldogs' sophomore from Davie, Fla., is now 4-3 on the season including the victory she earned earlier in the day against Southern Miss. PLAYER OF THE WEEK - - MEGHAN WAGNER Samford s freshman catcher Meghan Wagner led the Bulldogs to a 3-1 overall record at the 2005 Comfort Inn Mercer Classic last weekend as she finished the three-day tournament with a stellar.571 batting average, eight RBI, four runs, two grand slams and an astounding 1.429 slugging percentage. In the first game of the tournament, she powered a deep grand slam home run that accounted for her first collegiate hit in a 9-1 victory over Marist on Friday. Wagner then recorded her second grand slam of the weekend on Saturday as she registered a walk-off effort in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Mississippi Valley State, 9-5. She currently leads the Bulldogs in both home runs (2) and RBI (8) this season. SPORTS INFORMATION DEPARTMENT The Samford Sports Information Department is headed up by first-year director Joey Mullins and assistant director Zac Schrieber. Intern Tootie Taylor also plays an instrumental role in the day-to-day operations of the department and handles volleyball, track and field, cross country and both men s and women s tennis. Schrieber serves as the primary contact for men s basketball, women s soccer and softball, while Mullins handles football, women s basketball and baseball. All members of the media working Samford softball games must request credentials from Schrieber. Early requests are helpful, enabling media to receive parking passes prior to the game.
