FALL 2014 UPDATE FOR LEAGUES, PSO & TSOs Ultimate Canada (UC) is proud to produce quarterly updates for leagues, PSOs and TSOs. These updates are intended to provide information on our activities to keep you up to date. GENERAL Demographics and Grassroots Membership Request for demographics have been submitted to grassroots members. We are currently following up with associations that have not submitted demographics and dues. Human Resources Danielle Fortin has resigned from her position with Ultimate Canada in order to focus on her studies and family. We wish her the best in her future pursuits! Ultimate Canada is excited to welcome Christiane Marceau back as our new Programs Manager! Christiane brings many years of experience in the Canadian Ultimate community that is sure to support the future development of Ultimate Canada s programs. General Communication Ultimate Canada continues distribution of our e- newsletter for competitive players to keep them informed of events, programs and opportunities. In order to increase our transparency and accountability with our grassroots membership Ultimate Canada continues to provide quarterly reports. Translation Ultimate Canada continues to provide website and policy updates in both English and French. With the addition of Christiane Marceau, we are excited to have a francophone on staff to help speed up our translations. Art Hawkins Great Canadian Ultimate Game The 2014 Art Hawkins Great Canadian Ultimate Game raised over $8,000. Many thanks to all of the leagues that participated! Bring Your Disc to Work Day The 2014 Bring Your Disc to Work Day event took place on September 25, 2014. The photo contest received many applications and will select a winner on October 10, 2014. COMPETITION Competition Committee The 2014 competition committee has met three times in 2014, CUC The 2014 CUC was held in Waterloo, Ontario from August 11-14, 2014. Congratulations to the champions in each division: Junior Open: Toro (Champion) & Revolution (Spirit) Junior Women s: Toro (Champion) & Team Quebec (Spirit) Masters: Borderline (Champion) & NSOM (Spirit) Women s Masters: Terra (Champion) & Dyna (Spirit) Mixed: Crash (Champion) & Rogue Hippo (Spirit) Open: Shepdog (Champion) & Red Circus (Spirit) Women s: PPF (Champion) & Zephyr (Spirit) This year the CUC had Spirit of the Game scores posted live throughout the event. Many thanks to tournament director Andrew Portwine and all of the great volunteers who helped make this tournament a huge success! The 2015 CUC will be hosted in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Observer Program The observer committee has held 1 meeting this fall.
2 observer clinics were held this fall in connection with fall university events. One was held in Kingston as part of the CEUUC and one was held in Regina as part of the CPUUC. If you are interested in having an observer clinic in your community, please contact Teri- Lynne at teri- lynne@canadianultimate.com University Series The 2014 university series is underway. 4 regional events have already taken place across the country with over 50 teams competing. Results from the regional events can be found on the UC website: https://canadianultimate.com/p/2014- cuuc- series- schedule- and- results The 2014 CUUC will take place in Montreal, Quebec from October 16-19, 2014. This year will use a new format. More information on the new format and reforms can be found at: https://canadianultimate.com/p/cuuc- reform 2014 WUCC Canada sent 15 teams to the 2014 WUCC. We earned two medals with a gold medal in the inaugural women s masters division (Vintage) and a silver medal in masters (Figjam). Here are the final results for all of the Canadian teams: Open: 6 th (Furious George), 10 th (General Strike), 13 th (Phoenix) and 22 nd (Mephisto) Women s: 5 th (Traffic), 9 th (QUB) and 10 th (Fusion) Mixed: 4 th (TFP), 5 th (Union), 11 th (Gecko), and 13 th (Stache) Masters: 2 nd (Figjam), 10 th (NSOM) and 15 th (Flood) Women s Masters: 1 st (Vintage) Junior National Team Program Both of our teams did very well with the junior open team winning a gold medal and the junior women s team earning a silver medal. This is an improvement from 2 years ago where we finished 3 rd in both divisions. It is also the first time we have won gold in the junior open division since 2002. Canada also fared well for SOTG scores with the women s team finishing 4 th of 19 teams and the open team finishing 9 th of 24 teams. U23 National Team Program 2 talent ID camps were held in the spring/summer. This was an opportunity for the head coaches to work with assistant coach applicants and with athletes. Assistant coaches for all teams have been named. Mixed: Kaitlyn Lovatt, Open: Evan Philips, Women s: Jenn Kwok. 4 tryouts were held in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. Over 200 athletes applied for the teams. Player selection is scheduled to be completed by early November.
4-on-4 Championship The inaugural national 4- on- 4 championship will be held April 4-5, 2015 in Montreal, Quebec. The tournament will have 1 division, mixed, and there will be 24 bids for the tournament. Each province will receive 2 bids, each territory will receive 1 bid, and the host province will receive an additional bid. Les Jeux de la francophonie canadienne The 2014 jeux francophonie canadienne included 10 Ultimate teams from 9 provinces and 1 territory. Beach National Teams Due to strong interest, Ultimate Canada will be sending teams to the 2015 WCBU in the mixed masters and women s masters divisions. Teams for all divisions have been selected. National Coaching Certification Program The competition- introduction stream materials have been translated. Updated documents will be submitted to the Coaching Association of Canada for final approval this month. Long-Term Athlete Development The LTAD print version has been finalized and sent out to PTSOs and leagues that ordered copies. Additional copies can be ordered for $20/copy. Ultimate Canada Conference The 2014 Ultimate Canada Conference will take place in Toronto, Ontario from November 14-16, 2014. This year we re excited to have the World Flying Disc Federation as our guests and have an athlete development stream. Governance The 2014 Ultimate Canada Annual General Meeting took place in June. The 2014-2015 UC Board of Directors are: Rob Langridge (President), Yang Pang (Vice- President), Mark Moran (Treasurer), Tiago Hori (Secretary), Hadiya Roderique (At- large), Andrew Portwine (At- large), Grant Shaw (At- large) and Nicolas Vanasse (At- large). SPORT CANADA Ultimate Canada has submitted updated documentation for our Sport Canada SFAF V application.
