Hergott (315) 228-7566 jhergott@mail.colgate.edu Colgate Last Time Out (November 22, 2008) The No. 5/6 Dartmouth College women s hockey team scored four goals in the second period en route to a 7-2 to win over Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Thompson Arena. The Big Green recorded three power-play goals on the night, two in the second period. Dartmouth (7-1-1, 6-1-1) took the lead with in the first when Julia Bronson beat Raiders goaltender Lisa Plenderleith during its first power-play. Colgate would strike back 14 seconds later as Elin Brown recorded her fifth of the season to tie the score 1-1. Brown was assisted by Clancy Todd. The Big Green would finish the period with an even-strength goal from Jenna Foley to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Dartmouth out-shot the Raiders 13-7 in the period and went 1-2 on the power-play while Colgate went 0-2. Dartmouth did all the scoring in the second period to extend its lead to 6-1. The Raiders would light the lamp for the second time at 14:04 in the third when Evan Minnick found the net for the sixth time this season, she was assisted by Todd and Beth Rotenberg. Maggie Kennedy answered back 55 seconds later to give the Big Green its final tally. Plenderleith finished the night with 27 saves in two periods, while Elayna Hamashuk stopped nine in the third. The Big Green was led in net by Mariel Lacina who recorded 18 saves. Colgate and the Big Green combined for 23 penalties on the night. The Raiders went 1-7 on the power-play while Dartmouth went 3-13. Scouting the Raiders Colgate sports a 7-7-1 overall record 2-3-1 in ECAC Hockey after a weekend split with No. 9 Harvard (5-5) and No. 5/6 Dartmouth (2-7). Leading the Raiders up front is Sam Hunt with 15 points. Hunt has seven goals and eight assists. Hannah Milan has 13, followed by Katie Stewart and Elin Brown with 12, while Marissa Dombovy and Evan Minnick each have 11. Hunt, Milan and Stewart lead the team in goals with seven while Kiira Dosdall leads in assists with 13. Dosdall headlines the defenders with a teamhigh 16 points off three goals and 13 assists while Clancy Todd has six and Kristi-Lyn Pollock three. Colgate has rotated three goaltenders; senior Elayna Hamashuk, sophomore Lisa Plenderleith, and freshman Kimberly Sass. Hamashuk is 1-1 on the season, with a 4.81 goals against average and an.806 save percentage. Plenderleith is 1-5 with a 4.11 GAA and an.863 save percentage, while Sass is 5-1-1 with a 2.54 GAA with a.925 save percentage. The Raiders also have the third strongest power-play in the nation with a 29.0 percentage. The Colgate/New Hampshire Series New Hampshire is unbeaten in the series, winning all four games. UNH goaltender Kayley Herman has played all 13 games for the Wildcats this season and enters Saturday with a 2.42 goals against average and an.885 save percentage. The Wildcats have five players in double figures in scoring, headlined by senior Sam Farber and sophomore Jenn Wakefield with 16 points each. Wakefield leads the team in goals with 10, while Farber is on her heels with nine. Senior Angela Taylor leads the squad in assists with 10. Last Time Out Against New Hampshire Lisa Plenderleith made 41 saves in her collegiate debut as the Raiders fell 1-0 to then-no. 3/4 New Hampshire, Oct. 12 at the Whittemore Center. It was the most saves made by a Colgate goalie in her first career game since Jen Burtaw made 44 stops against St. Lawrence in 1999. The two teams played nearly 58 minutes of scoreless hockey, as Colgate did a great job of keeping UNH at bay by forecheck and by clearing the puck out of the zone. The Wildcats outshot the Raiders 14-3 in the first period and 17-7 in the second, and Colgate had 13 shots to UNH s 11 in the final period. Colgate/New Hampshire Connections Beth Rotenberg and Martina Garland both call Toronto home, while Kiira Dosdall and Raylen Dziengelewski are Loomis Chaffee grads. Ali Edell, Steph Homes and Kacey Ballamy each attended Berkshire School and Elayna Hamashuk and Sam Faber are Northwood grads. Sam Hunt was named Player of the Week, while Kimberly Sass was named Rookie of the Week. This is the second time Hunt has been honored with the league award, although she has been named honorable mention on 16 occasions. This is the first league award for Sass. Hunt scored the eventual game-winning goal and added an assist in the Raiders 3-1 win versus Niagara Friday (Oct. 17) at Starr Rink. She also netted a power play goal and an unassisted goal in Colgate s 7-1 victory over Niagara Saturday (Oct. 18). With four points over the weekend Hunt became Colgate s all-time leading Division I scorer with 113 points. Sass won her first collegiate start in net for Colgate, as they downed Niagara 7-1 on Saturday. Sass displayed a solid performance in net coming up with big saves, while back boning a defense that was 7-for-7 in penalty kills. Sass made a total of 19 saves, including nine in the second period to earn the victory. This marks the second straight season a Colgate freshman goaltender has earned honors after her first call of duty. Last season Lisa Plenderleith was named the USCHO National Defensive Player of the Week after recording 41 saves during her collegiate debut versus New Hampshire. Plenderleith earned ECAC honorable mention for Goalie of the Week for her performance in net on Friday against Niagara. Plenderleith held the Purple Eagles scoreless for nearly 56 minutes and recorded 22 saves in the Raiders 3-1 victory. Union 0 0-6-0 0-13-1 Preseason Prediction Colgate was selected to finish seventh in the ECAC Hockey Preseason Poll after receiving 64 points in a vote by league coaches. The Raiders are just eight points behind sixth-place pick Princeton. Harvard has been selected by the coaches to win the league, earning 10 first-place votes and a total of 119 points. St. Lawrence received 103 points for second place and the remaining two firstplace votes. Behind Colgate in eighth place and earning 14 fewer points than the Raiders is Yale with 50 points. Rensselaer is ninth, Brown is 10th, Quinnipiac is 11th, and Union is 12th. Get Smart Kara Leene 08, Laura Jansen and Sara Plunkett were all named to the 2007-08 American Women s Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Scholar-Athlete Team in May, 2007. This was the third time Leene was named a national scholarathlete and Jansen s second. I Heart NY Last season, Colgate had a 6-4-2 record against teams from New York State. The Raiders posted series sweeps over Niagara and Union, went 0-1-1 with Clarkson and Rensselaer, and split with Cornell and St. Lawrence. November Numbers Colgate went 4-2 during November last season and enters this weekend with a 2-3 mark. All time Colgate is 41-31-1 during November, for a 57.1 win percentage, its second-best win percentage compared to January. They outscored opponents by 40 goals during that time. October Ordinals This year the Raiders posted an impressive 5-3 mark in October. Last season, Colgate had a disappointing October, going 0-5-1. All time in October, Colgate is 18-22-5 with a 45.0 win percentage. The Raiders have scored 102 goals during the month compared to their opponents 125. Colgate is 11-7-1 at home during the first month of the season and 7-15-4 on the road. Home Sweet Home Since 2001 the Raiders are 57-46-7 at home, outscoring their opponents by 49 goals (311-262). All time, Colgate is 85-60-12 at home and has scored 136 more goals than its opponent at Starr Rink. On the Road Again Last season Colgate went 5-11-1, compared to the previous year when they posted a 9-9-2 mark. All-time Colgate is 71-90-17 on the road and have been outscored by 65 goals (414-479). They are 42-75-15 since going DI in 2001. Tough Enough The Raiders will face seven of the 10 teams ranked in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll. They include New Hampshire (4), Harvard (5), Mercyhurst (6), St. Lawrence (7), Darmouth (8), Providence (9) and Boston College (10). Colgate will also face four of the six teams receiving votes including Clarkson, Connecticut, Cornell and Wayne State. McNaughton graduated from Colgate in 2007 with a degree in political science. A four-year letterwinner at forward, McNaughton has played in more games than any other player in Colgate history, skating in 138 games. She finished her career with 23 goals and 41 assists for 64 points, to sit in the top 15 in the career scoring list. After receiving a medical redshirt for an illness in her third academic year, she returned as a captain and switched from a wing to a center, winning 544 draws. Following graduation, she returned to her hometown of Lethbridge, Alberta and accepted a job at the University of Lethbridge as an assistant women s hockey coach. O Captain! My Captain! Colgate has elected seniors Elin Brown, Sam Hunt and Kiira Dosdall as team captains. Hey Rookie There are five newcomers on the squad this season, two forwards, two defenders and one goaltender. Forwards: Krista Dermott and Heidi Peterson. Dermott is from Milton, Ont. and played for the Brampton Thunder, Peterson came from Hastings, Minn., where she played for Hotchkiss. Defenders: Amanda Kirwan and Kristi-Lyn Pollock. Kirwan is from Mississauga, Ont. and skated with the Toronto Aeros. Pollock joined the Riaders from Virden, Man. after playing with the Balmoral Hall Blazers. Goaltander: Kimberly Sass is from East Amherst, N.Y. as a member of the Buffalo Bison.
