T he fuse is lit for a potentially explosive season of inter-team rivalry. Battling at close quarters has never been as tense for Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes. The pair collided during Race 4 at Symmons Plains with Lowndes shoved off the track after Whincup dived up the inside on the final corner. The V8 Supercars Investigating Officer Jason Bargwanna chose not to hand out any penalty in the incident stating that it was a 50/50 call and further stipulated that his decision had been in no way affected because the drivers were team-mates. Even so, arguably the most dominant team in the sport s history, now faces a task of driver and strategy management like never before. Crucially trying to separate the #888 and #1 is paramount as Lowndes becomes more determined to end his 15-year streak of missing out on a Championship title and Whincup enters waters never before sailed by a driver in V8SC/Australian Touring Car history. After winning five of the opening six races, Red Bull appear to have responded to any challenge dished up in early exchanges from from the impressive Volvo S60 of Scott McLaughlin and the resurgence of the Holden Racing Team led by the #22 of James Courtney. While many fans and rival teams see Red Bull as wearing out its welcome in terms of its continuous All-In-One Security occupation at the top, the spectacle between its two drivers could be approaching new heights. Races 7/8/9 - Winton 400 I Betting Story 7 Red Bull take a stranglehold on Winton markets J amie Whincup s domination in Tasmania has seen him command early markets for Winton. Based on statistics Whincup is a pronounced favourite at $2.50, cramped odds for a motor race. However, he was in strong form at the tight Symmons Plains round, launching his Red Bull Commodore to pole in all three qualifying sessions and winning both 100km races, before finishing second to team-mate Craig Lowndes in the final 200km race. The victories have now seen the fivetimes series champion claim three of the six races from the opening two events. Lowndes clinical win in the 84-lap final heat in Tassie was his second for the year and is assessed at the more liberal odds of $4. Volvo star Scott McLaughlin, who was hobbled by power steering issues last weekend, is at $11 with his GRM team confident they have solved the issues as they return to their home test track. Ford s flag flyer Mark Winterbottom is at $13 while Clipsal race winner James Courtney, who continued his strong form at Symmons Plains, is rated an $18 chance. Our proud platinum partners

Our proud platinum partners 8 Races 7/8/9 - Winton 400 I Cover Story Matadors set to lock horn I f a storm hadn t been brewing behind the scenes at Red Bull, then the clash between teammates Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup at Symmons Plains was the first clap of thunder. Last Saturday s racing incident that saw the pair collide costing the team an almost certain one-two finish, offered a brief glimpse into the internal friction between the two Red Bull stablemates. Both Lowndes and Whincup downplayed the confrontation immediately after the race while stewards deemed nobody at fault for the clash. Whincup, who instigated the move that punted Lowndes from the lead, was adamant the pass was on while his opposite was disappointed to lose out on a possible race win, but preferred to hide his frustrations from the public. It was a textbook move I was up the inside and was well and truly in there, said Whincup. It was a standard move but unfortunately that is the way it goes. Its disappointing we didn t have a 1-2. We just needed to sort it. It was an awkward situation one of the most awkward we ve had and we just needed to

Races 7/8/9 - Winton 400 I Cover Story 9 s again sort it out straight away. The on track inter team boil over could be the start of a string of potential flashpoints this season, with the pair looking ominous for a title challenge at the top of the championship standings. However, judging from the team s reaction last weekend, Triple Eight personnel will not stand for any repeat of the situation in the future. According to Lowndes any potential aggravation between the pair has been resolved. Jamie and I have spoken it is just water under the bridge and we will just get on with the racing. He is just as upset as I am, said Lowndes. We were running strong and we almost had a 1-2 but thats motor racing. When you have two competitive drivers in a team eventually something is going to happen. Casting the incident aside, Lowndes reacted in the best possible way by channeling his frustrations into two impressive drives. First he scythed his way through the field from dead last to fifth before laying down a real marker to Whincup by dominating the final race of the Symmons Plains meeting. The race victory maintained his lead in the championship standings as his bid to end his title drought gathers momentum. As has been the story for several years, the perennial hurdle standing in the way of Lowndes and the title is Whincup, who is now eyeing up a sixth title. A quick glance at the statistics from the season so far shows the task that faces Lowndes but even he feels this could be his year. It could be. Jamie has moved up from seventh to second so it is going to be a long year, added Lowndes. The champion at the end of the year will be the driver that is most consistent. There are weekends where you have to make the best of a bad situation and that is what we did at Symmons. 2014 Statistics Average Qualifying Average Race Finish Jamie Whincup 1.5 2.8* 3.8 3.2 Craig Lowndes *Excluding Lowndes Symmons Plains qualifying exclusion A clear area where Lowndes falls short in his head-to-head with Whincup is in the qualifying stakes. The reigning champion has averaged front row starts from all the races this year which is yet further evidence that consistency reaps results. Lowndes has admitted he is working hard on his qualifying performances, but if last weekend s showing is anything to go by he is most definitely up for the fight. I have just got to continue this at Winton, Lowndes continued. We have always gone well there but it has not been our test track. There is a great depth of competition out there with a lot of quality cars but we have hit the marks where we have needed to. Our proud platinum partners

16 Races 7/8/9 - Winton 400 I Did You Know 1Victory in the final race at Symmons Plains in Tasmania last weekend has taken Craig Lowndes to 96 Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship race wins. Lowndes continues to inch closer to becoming the first driver in Championship history to win 100 races. He has claimed four of those wins at Winton, one in 2006, two in 2009 and the most recent in 2012. He leads teammate Jamie Whincup by 70 points heading into the Winton event. DID YOU? KNOW? 2Winton is the home test track for 18 of the 25 drivers in the 2014 V8 Supercars Championship and history shows that honours have been evenly shared between the home teams and the visitors over the past eight years. There have been 20 races held from 2006 onwards with Queensland-based teams winning 11 and the locals claiming nine. Last year three local factory teams Nissan Motorsport, Ford Performance Racing and the Holden Racing Team took the three Winton race wins. 3This year is the 27th time the ATCC/V8SC has competed at Winton since the first event was held in 1985. A total of 52 races have been held since then with Triple Eight Race Engineering and Dick Johnson Racing tied for the most wins by a team eight apiece. There was no Championship event at Winton in 1987, 1996 or 2005. 4Norton Hornets driver James Moffat is returning to the scene of his first V8 Supercars Championship race win last season, though he, his Nissan squad and their Ford, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz rivals are in the middle of a Holden red-wash. Commodore drivers have won the last 11 V8SC Championship races, covering the final two events last season at Phillip Island and Sydney Olympic Park and this year s first two in Adelaide and Tasmania. The last non-holden to win a Championship race was The Bottle-O Falcon of David Reynolds and Dean Canto at last October s Gold Coast event. 5Hall of Famers John Bowe and Glenn Seton hold the record for most Championship race wins at Winton five though there are six pilots in the 2014 field that could equal or surpass their record this weekend given the three-race format. Garth Tander, Jason Bright, Russell Ingall, Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes have all won four races, while James Courtney sits on three race wins at Winton. 6It s hard to believe given his major list of achievements, but Garth Tander has never taken a V8SC ARMOR ALL Pole Position at Winton though he s qualified second an amazing six times! The Holden Racing Team driver is in a qualifying drought given he has now gone 42 Championship races since his last pole position in 2012 in Sydney, which was also the last time he qualified on the front row of the grid. 7Consistent strong qualifying performances are what Championship wins are built upon but so far this year there has been a wild fluctuation in the qualifying results of the majority of the field. Only two drivers Jamie Whincup and Scott McLaughlin have started in the top 10 for every race so far in 2014. Whincup is yet to qualify outside the top three and has claimed four ARMOR ALL Pole Positions, while the quiet achiever is Erebus Motorsport s Lee Holdsworth who has been the sixth-best qualifier, averaging a start position of 9.8. Our proud platinum partners 8The likelihood of the Chrysler Pedders Safety Car appearing at Winton is very high given the Safety Car has appeared in 23 of the last 29 races (79.3 per cent) there since 2000. The last time there was a whole event completed at Winton without the Safety Car making an appearance in at least one of the races was 1999. 9Nick Percat and Robert Dahlgren are the only drivers in the field to have never competed in a V8 Supercars Championship event at Winton. Percat won the Dunlop Series round at the circuit in 2012 and also won the Australian Formula Ford Championship round at Winton in 2009. second round of the Dunlop Series is the main support category at the Winton 400 and the home Victorian teams as well as Albury-based Brad Jones Racing should feel very confident about their 10The chances. Home teams have won nine of the 10 Dunlop Series rounds ever held at Winton, with current points leader Paul Dumbrell himself a winner back in 2002 the year he won the series. Dumbrell holds a 21-point lead over Taz Douglas with Ash Walsh, Andrew Jones and Chris Pither completing the top five.
