Ancient Order of Hibernians 151 Watertown Street PO Box 11 Watertown, MA 02471 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED APRIL 2012 NEWSLETTER Comedy Night April 20th

Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 14 151 Watertown Street PO Box 11 Watertown, MA 02471 (617) 926-3315 Leo Falter lcfalter@hotmail.com APRIL 2012 NEWSLETTER AOH President s Message Baseball has started so that means spring is here. Let see what the new season brings. If the Sox work hard good things will happen. Like the Red Sox we too have to strive for excellence. The key for Division 14 is to work together to reach our goals. We can only do this if everyone contributes what they can. We have a busy schedule this month. So keep yourselves warmed up because we are definitely going to need help from the bench to reach our goals. We can t keep relying on our everyday members to hit the homeruns. A good team gets support from the bench. We need members to step up and contribute to our goals. Imagine if a member came off the bench and came to Mass and the Communion Breakfast. That s a Homerun! Imagine if a member came out of the bullpen and got a table full of friends to come to the Comedy Nite. That s a closer! Imagine if some new members came to A Nite at the Races with a few friends and had a great time. That would get the momentum rolling and before you know it everyone starts to feel good about what s happening. This is the ingredient to a successful organization. Before we head too far off into our Spring Training schedule, I would like to take a moment to talk about our annual Communion Breakfast. The past couple of years we have had a poor showing for this event. I want to remind everyone that this breakfast is mandated in our by-laws. For us it should be the most important event of the year. We are a Catholic organization and we need to show people that we are committed to our faith and church. Last year we had seven brothers representing our division of over 300 members. This has to change. Become a contributor to our championship team this year! I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event this season. ~Leo (617) 926-3315 or lcfalter@hotmail.com LAOH President s Message Spring is finally here! It is time for getting out and enjoying the great weather. So in this spirit, we will be offering a 1/2 hour talk for 7 steps to a healthy heart starting at 7pm before our May meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting on Monday May 14, 2012. ~Maureen (508) 479-7604 or maureenrhenry@hotmail.com 2

E-mail Addresses Needed From All Members We are trying to set up an e-mail distribution list to cut down the bulletin expenses. Please send your e-mail to aohdiv14pres@gmail.com. Some brothers and sisters are already receiving the bulletin via e-mail and they get this news so much faster than those receiving the postal mail. We have heard from so many of you that e- mail is such a great communication vehicle. We look forward to hearing from you soon. 3

Past events: St. Patrick s Day: Last month we celebrated St. Patrick s Day on two occasions. The first was at Family Supper. Doc Prince and his crew did another great job having a wonderful Corned Beef Dinner. If you got there late you were out of luck because we had a large crowd and the food went fast. We are very lucky to have such a dedicated group to keep this supper going. It is a real value to offer our members. As you know any extra money goes to the scholarship fund. Thank you to all the servers and cooks. And a special thanks to our own M.V.P. Doc Prince. The second celebration we had was on St. Patrick s Day. It was nice to have this day fall on a Saturday. We were able to have the festivities during the day. We have been trying to do more at the club in honor of St. Patrick. This year we had Music n Motion play the tunes for us. Brian Costa did a great job of mixing up the music, playing tradition as well pop selections. Rather than have a dinner we offered corned beef sandwiches on marble rye bread. Brother John Donahue donated the bread and gave us a great technique to serving a hot sandwich with melted cheese. They were delicious. Thanks to J.D., Buddy Mac, Peter Daley, Jimmy Cunningham and those I missed for helping out. Let s not forget our purveyors of fine meats (The Falter Farm, Brother Dick and Evelyn Hart.) Upcoming events: Comedy Night-April 20th On Friday night April 20th the Building committee will host a Comedy Night. This is a great opportunity to help the building out and see a funny show. The building committee does a super job maintaining the building and grounds. Lead by Dennis Murphy and Dan McAdam they have kept up the property at high standard while improving it whenever possible. To perform this huge task requires a good deal of money. With soaring fuel cost, utilities, minor repairs and capital improvements it s a testament to the committee that we still own a building. Because of their dedication and hands on work we have one of the best looking buildings in Watertown. There is more to be done. They have their bucket list and they would very much like to reach their goals. This is where you can help, get a few friends together reserve a table and watch a great show. Do your part and help them continue to be a winning team. If you can t make it that night you can still be a part of the Team by buying a ticket. You can stop by and purchase tickets at the club, while you are there take a look at the fantastic new paint job in the lounge. If you can t make it to the club you can call Dan Mcadam@617-212-6486

Upcoming events (continued): Communion Breakfast-April 29 th On Sunday April 29 we have a doubleheader. Sunday morning we will have our annual Communion Breakfast. Mass will be 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick s on Main St. Watertown. We should meet no later than 9:45 to line up and proceed down the aisle together. The mass is for our deceased Brothers and Sisters. After the mass we will have a breakfast at our hall. The guest speaker will be John Horrigan who will talk about Bloody Sunday. The cost is $10.00 per person. Please make the effort to attend. Fintan Stanley-April 29 th On Sunday April 29 we will have a special treat for everyone. Fintan Stanley will be performing for us. The doors will open at 2:00 p.m. and the music will run from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. A light fare will be provided. This event is open to the public, so invite your friends and get ready to be entertained by an extraordinary accordion player. Some consider Fintan to be the best in the world. He is well known so get your tickets early. Advanced tickets are $15.00. The day of the concert, tickets are $20.00. Scholarship Applications-April 30th We want to let all high school seniors know that we are accepting applications for our scholarships now. The Division 14 AOH will be giving out 2 Division scholarships and the Al Murphy county scholarship. The LAOH will be giving out 1 Division Scholarship and 1 Cathy and Helen Prince Scholarship this year. Applications are due by April 30, 2012 and the scholarships will be awarded on Friday, May 18, 2012. See the application forms for details. Family Supper-May 3rd: Please support the monthly family supper events. All contributions help support the AOH scholarship fund. Our next family supper is scheduled for May 3, 2012. Nite at the Races-May 4th On Friday May 4 the division will host a Nite at the Races. We have had this event a couple of times before and I can tell you from experience it is a lot of fun. When the race starts the cheering gets loud and everybody urges their horse on. It s great to see who won and who lost. We are hoping to raise some money to send some delegates to the National Convention in July. This year the convention is in upstate New York. So come on down place your bet and cheer your horse on. See flyer for details.
