LAST TIME OUT WAKE FOREST VS. SETON HALL DEC. 4, 2011 WALSH GYMNASIUM Wake Forest opened the game on a 20-0 run and never looked back, defeating Minnesota 82-65 last Thursday evening at the Joel Coliseum as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Demon Deacon victory was head coach Mike Petersen s 110th while at Wake Forest, making him the winningest coach in school history. Asia Williams scored 13 points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds to collect a double-double. The junior also dished out a career-high six assists on the night and tied a career-high with fi ve steals. Sophomore point guard Chelsea Douglas scored a careerhigh 20 points while knocking down a career-high fi ve threepointers. Lakevia Boykin chipped in 17 points on the night for the Deacs, while Sandra Garcia added 12 points. Four players scored in double fi gures for Minnesota, led by Kiara Buford s 15 points and Rachel Banham s 12 points. Micaella Riche contributed 11 points for the Golden Gophers, while Katie Loberg chipped in 10 points and 11 boards. Wake Forest forced 26 turnovers on the night and turned them into 29 points on the other end. On the offensive end, the Deacs shot 48 percent from the fl oor, including 35 percent from long range. The Demon Deacon bench continued to be productive just as they have done all season, combining to score 47 points. The Deacon defense proved too much for the Golden Gophers to handle early on, as Minnesota did not score a point until the 10:03 mark when Sari Noga fi nally nailed a threepointer deep in the left corner. The Gophers got as close at four at 35-31 with 40 seconds left in the fi rst half but a 5-0 surge to end the half but the Deacs up by nine at the break. Minnesota would not get any closer than nine points the rest of the way. WHAT S NEXT The Demon Deacons will return home to start another home stand. Wake will host Radford on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at noon. The Deacs are 5-3 all-time against Radford but dropped the most recent meeting in 2008. PETERSEN SETS WAKE FOREST WINS RECORD With a win over Minnesota on Dec. 1, 2011, head coach Mike Petersen became the all-time winningest women s basketball coach in school history. Petersen now has 110 victories at Wake Forest, breaking Joe Sanchez s old mark of 109 wins from 1985-92. Sanchez, who had a career record of 109-93, took the Deacons to its only NCAA Tournament in 1988. When Petersen came to Wake Forest prior to the start of the 2004-05 season, the program was in the midst of 12-straight seasons under.500. But Petersen promptly turned that around, guiding the team to wins in 10 of the fi rst 11 games and ultimately fi nishing with a 17-15 record. He also took the team to its fi rst postseason appearance since 1988. After a pair of tough seasons in 2005-06 and 2006-07, Pe- tersen led the team to a 12-2 start in 2007-08 and a schoolrecord 12-straight wins to start the 2008-09 season. In 2009, he took the team to the WNIT for the second time in his short tenure, becoming the fi rst coach to lead two teams to postseason play. The Deacs fi nished with a 19-12 record, which marked the second-most wins in school-history. In 2009-10, Petersen guided a young Deacon squad to an 18-14 mark and a fi fth place fi nish in the ACC. Last season, Wake went 15-17 and won an ACC Tournament game for the third-straight season, which is the fi rst time that has happened in school-history. DEACONS IMPROVE TO 2-2 IN BIG TEN/ACC CHALLENGE Wake Forest defeated Minnesota 82-65 in the 2011 Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 1 in Winston-Salem. This was the Demon Deacon s fourth appearance in the challenge and they are 2-2 overall. Wake knocked-off Northwestern 60-45, in Evansville, Ind., in 2007, and then fell 65-50 to Illinois in 2009 in Winston- Salem. Last season, the Deacs were overwhelmed in their trip to Michigan as the Wolverines rolled to a 91-58 victory. This was the fi rst meeting between Wake Forest and Minnesota on the hardwood and it was the fi rst game for Wake against a team from the state of Minnesota. Wake is now 5-8 all-time against schools from the Big Ten. Minnesota has played in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge all fi ve years and holds a 2-3 record. The Gophers knocked-off Virginia Tech last season and pulled-out an 80-60 victory over Boston College in 2008. This was also the third-straight year the Deacs have faced an opponent in the challenge for the fi rst time ever. THOMAS WANTS TO BE KNOWN AS THE BEST GIVER Senior point guard Brooke Thomas has played in every game since she stepped foot on campus in 2008 and is nearing Wake s career assist record. She currently has 409 career assists which is 5th all-time in school history. She trails Amy Privette by 15 assists for fourth place while Nicole Levesque holds the school record at 488. Thomas is averaging 4.0 assists per game which is the thirdbest average in school history. If she remains on her current pace, Thomas will break the record by the end of the regular season. RAY S JOINS RARE REBOUNDING CLUB Senior forward Secily Ray grabbed 10 rebounds in the season-opener against Monmouth and became just the ninth Demon Deacon to join the 600-rebound club. Ray is currently sixth in school-history with 628 career rebounds. Ray has played in all but two games in her Demon Deacon career. She grabbed 197 rebounds as a freshman and then lead the team with 241 rebounds in 2009-10. Last season, Ray fi nished with 153 rebounds. The Thomasville, N.C., native also averaged 11.1 points a game as a sophomore and has a total of 829 career points. She has an opportunity to become just the eighth Demon Deacon to record 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds. CAREER RANKINGS WATCH BROOKE THOMAS Category Stat Car. LIGHTS, CAMERA, DEACONS WAKE FOREST VS. SETON HALL DEC. 4, 2011 WALSH GYMNASIUM Wake Forest is scheduled to play at least six games this season on television. The Deacons debut on the small screen will be on Jan. 6 when Wake opens ACC play at home against Duke. That game will be televised by RSN. The second and third games will also be on RSN. The Deacons host NC State on Jan. 16 at the Joel Coliseum and then will travel to Boston College on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 5). One week later, Wake Forest will make its fi rst-ever appearance on ESPN2. The Deacons will take on NC State in Raleigh as part of ESPN s February Frenzy. The fi nal regular season game on television will be a 6:30 p.m. tilt against the Cavaliers of Virginia on Feb. 24. The Deacons will look to avenge a 27-point loss in Charlottesville last season. All 11 games of the 35th ACC Tournament will also be televised this year. The eight games over the fi rst two days will be shown by the ACC Network while ESPNU will televise the semifi nals and ESPN2 will air the fi nals. WAKE S MAGIC NUMBER IS 70 Under head coach Mike Petersen, the Demon Deacons have a record of 59-12 when they score 70 or more points. Since 2004-05, when the Deacons score less than 70 points in a game, they are just 50-98. The Deacs have topped the 70-point mark in all six of its games so far this season. In Petersen s fi rst year, 2004-05, Wake was 13-2 when scoring 70+ and 4-13 when scoring less than 70. Wake topped the 70-point mark 11 times last season and averaged 66.5 points per game. The Deacs were a perfect 4-0 when scoring 70+ in 2009-10. In 2010-11, Wake was 9-2 when scoring 70+ points. COLLIER, RAY AND THOMAS VIE TO FINISH AT THE HEAD OF THE CLASS Graduate student Camille Collier and seniors Secily Ray and Brooke Thomas have been a part of 57 wins in their threeplus years of action. The current school-record for wins by a class is 70 held by the 1991 senior class of Jenny Mitchell, Lisa Dodd, Colleen Bentz and Sara White. That class not only won 70 games but also made the programs only NCAA Tournament appearance. When Collier started her career at Wake Forest in 2006-07 season, the Deacons were coming off back-to-back losing seasons and a winless ACC season in 2005-06. She saw action right away as freshman and was part of a team that went 15-15. In 2008-09, she was then joined by Thomas and Ray and the trio would held the Deacons fi nished with 19 wins, the second-most in school-history and advance to the WNIT. The next season, Wake made it s second-straight WNIT appearance, fi nished fi fth in the ACC and was 18-14 over. Collier then suffered a knee injury in the preseason last season and was not part of the team that went 15-17 and won an ACC Tournament game for the third-straight year. Last year s senior class of Brittany Waters and Kem Wilson fi nished their four-year careers as the second-winningest class in school history. The tandem fi nished with a total of 67 victories. Wake has exceeded expectations in each of the last three years. The Deacs were picked to fi nish 12th in 2008-09 but went on to post the second-most wins in school-history (19-12) and fi nish tied for eighth in the ACC. In 2009-10, Wake was predicted to fi nish 10th but instead went 7-7 in the conference, which was the second-best conference record in school-history, and fi nished tied for fi fth. Last season, the Deacons were pegged ninth at the start of the year but fi nished in a tie for seventh with a 15-17 record overall. Miami was picked to win the conference for the fi rst time since the school joined the conference in 2004. 2011-12 ACC PRESEASON POLL (First Place Votes) 1. Miami (30) 2. Duke (10) 3. Maryland 4.
