NAIL-BITERS PILING UP The Golden Bears 7-15 overall record doesn t tell the whole story as the young squad has posted a 5-10 record in games decided by 10 points or less. In many of those 10 losses, they have held leads in the fi nal 10 minutes of play or later and had chances to tie or win on the game s fi nal possession. GOLDEN BEARS COMING TO LIFE After starting 0-10 in conference play, the Bears have won fi ve of their last eight and three in a row. The offense has been clicking, scoring 74 points or more in all but one of their last eight. FREE THROW MARKSMEN Concordia leads the Northern Sun and is second in the country in free throw shooting, making 78.9% as a team overall (22 games) and an even sharper 81.6% mark in 18 NSIC contests. Three players shoot at an 80.0% or better clip at the stripe led by sophomore Terez VanPelt (84.1%) and sophomore Cole Olstad (84.0%). VanPelt also reaches the line regularly, leading the team with 151 attempts - that s 37.1% of the team s total free throw attempts. VanPelt recently had a string of 30-straight free throws made spanning nearly fi ve full games. Further, VanPelt has made 66 of his last 73 free throws (90.4%) in the past 12 games, while the team has made 82.6% (185-224) during that same span. LAST TIME OUT: CONCORDIA SWEEPS CROOKSTON/ BEMIDJI STATE Last weekend the Golden Bears picked up their fi rst conference sweep of the season with a pair of wins over Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State. On Friday, Cole Olstad continued his solid play and led the way with 28 points on 11-15 shooting and 4-6 from three in the Bears 88-66 win. This was his second consecutive game with 28+ points after scoring 30 in the previous game against U-Mary. Terez VanPelt also had a big night with 25 points and fi ve assists. VanPelt was 9-13 from the fi eld and didn t turn the ball over. On Saturday, Concordia went wire-to-wire with Bemidji State, winning the game on a go-ahead three with 4.4 seconds from Cordell Smith to give them an 85-84 victory. Smith had easily his best game as a Golden Bear, scoring 21 points on 8-11 shooting and 5-7 from three while also picking up 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. The 21 points and 10 boards were both career-highs. Senior Isaiah Thomas connected early and often from three, hitting his fi rst six of the game and fi nished with 22 points on 7-9 shooting and 6-8 from beyond the arc. SERIES HISTORY: WINONA 38, CONCORDIA 2 The Warriors have dominated the all-time series, winning 38 of the 40 meetings. Winona State won the first 31 meetings before CU finally broke through on December 6th, 2008 with a 75-74 win in Winona. Concordia won again in Winona on February 5th, 2011 by a score of 81-79. WSU has won the last four meetings. LAST MEETING: WINONA 66, CONCORDIA 63 Back on December 8th, the Golden Bears and Warriors battled to the finish in St. Paul. Concordia held the ball with a chance to tie the game as the final seconds were ticking away when Terez VanPelt was called for an offensive foul as time expired. VanPelt paced the offense with 20 points on 9-10 from the line while Thomas added 17 points on five threes. Freshman Shea Mandli also grabbed a career-high 10 boards in the game. SCOUTING THE WARRIORS The Winona State Warriors come into the weekend red-hot, winning 15 of their last 16 games. This streak started with the fi rst meeting of the year between these two teams. The Bears are 3-1 in games in which they have scored 80+ this season and are 1-6 when surrendering 80+. Last season, when Concordia scored at least 80 points they were 10-2 while they posted an 11-4 record when they allowed under 80 points. But they went just 2-12 when scoring under 80 and 1-10 when the opposition reached 80 or higher. Since Kelly Boe has been head coach, Concordia is 43-11 when scoring at least 80 points, 15-1 when scoring 90-plus and 8-0 when scoring 100-plus. When allowing 80 or more points under Kelly Boe, Concordia is 8-46. They are 3-13 when allowing 90-plus and are 1-1 when allowing over 100 points.
