The Providence College women s ice hockey team went 0-2-0 on the weekend against No. 9 Mercyhurst. During Friday s match-up, the Friars fell 6-3. After going down 2-0, senior Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) fed freshman Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) with a pass before Illikainen put the puck past the Laker goaltender to close the Mercyhurst lead to one. The Lakers quickly responded and extended their lead to 3-1. Junior Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) answered for the Friars when she took a slapshot from the point that beat the goaltender putting the Friars in striking distance, 3-2, going into the third period. Mercyhurst came out flying and scored a powerplay goal on freshman Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.) giving them a two goal lead at the start of the third period. The Friars kept battling and eventually answered 10 minutes later at 14:08 when sophomore Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) put senior Emily Groth (Monona, Wisc.) rebound to the back of the net. With the score, 4-3 Mercyhurst, the Lakers scored again with 2:58 remaining in the game extending their lead to 5-3 putting the game out of reach. The Friars pulled Bryant in an effort to even the score. While the net was open the Lakers notched their sixth and final goal of the night. The Lakers carried their momentum into Saturday s game when they blanked the Friars 5-0. Junior goaltender Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.) saw 22 shots and made 17 saves. SCOUTING VERMONT...
