December 30, 2018 8p and December 31, 2018 2p Ballet Vero Beach Nutcracker on the Indian River (Photo by: Will Brenner) For the second year, Ballet Vero Beach, the only professional ballet company between Palm Beach and Orlando, presents the thrilling original production Nutcracker on the Indian River at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center. The libretto and classical score retain all the whimsy and magic of the original ballet, but the action has been moved to the year Vero Beach was founded (1919). By taking the ballet's heroine, Marie, on a holiday journey from New York to Florida, Fifth Avenue Mansions, Grand Central Station, and rail cars become settings. Instead of the traditional second act featuring candy characters and ethnic dances, Marie dreams of the shores of the Indian River Lagoon and is entertained by all manner of local flora and fauna. From land crabs to manatees and river otters to bougainvillea, Nutcracker on the Indian River takes all the magic of The Nutcracker and the holiday season and uses that magic to both entertain and inspire.
