Looking Back, Forward Georgia opened its 2017 campaign on the road at No. 2 LSU, and the Gymdogs fell by a score of 197.825-193.600. The Tigers posted their highest-ever score for a home opener while the Gymdogs debuted 10 new routines from a year ago. Sydney Snead led the team with an all-around score of 39.225 after leading the team in three of four events. The sophomore from Raleigh, N.C. claimed 9.875s on bars and vault and posted a 9.8 in her first-ever beam routine. Freshmen Rachel Dickson and Sabrina Vega each made their respective collegiate debuts in the contest while Morgan Reynolds performed on bars for the first time as a Gymdog. Additionally, senior Beth Roberts took her first turn on floor during the team s season opener. The Gymdogs were strapped in multiple spots due to injuries and illness, with 2016 regulars Gracie Cherrey and Natalie Vaculik missing the meet and Gigi Marino only able to compete on floor. The tough night was punctuated in the final rotation, when Georgia was forced to count two falls on beam as LSU was able to pull away. UGA vs. Auburn Series History Georgia and Auburn met three times in 2016, with Auburn getting the better of the series, 2-1. The Gymdogs were victorious at the NCAA Semifinals, where UGA finished third in Session I while Auburn placed fifth. Historically, Georgia has the edge in the all-time series by a 70-7 record. Under head coach Danna Durante, Georgia has gone 5-4 against the Tigers with a 1-1 record at Auburn. All-time, Georgia is 18-2 when taking on Auburn on the road. Slow Starts, Fast Growth In each of the past two seasons, Georgia posted one of its lowest scores of the season in week one road meets. Each time, the Gymdogs responded by winning a conference meet in the following week. A year ago, the Gymdogs started on the road with a 195.2, then went to Arkansas six days later and took a victory with a 196.775. In 2015, Georgia fell to Michigan at home to open the season then followed with a victory over Mizzou. In three of Durante s four seasons in Athens, the Gymdogs week two score was higher than its total in the first meet of the year, with an average increase of 0.85 on the team score. The 1999 Gymdogs opened the season with a score of 193.375 before going on to win the program s fifth national championship. Super Syd It didn t take long for Sydney Snead to make an impact in collegiate gymnastics, as she won an event title on bars in her first-ever meet as a Gymdog (at Michigan, Jan. 9, 2016). Snead maintained her strong performance throughout her freshman year and is the leading returning point-getter on the roster. While competing on vault, bars and floor a year ago, Snead accumulated 422.3375 overall points in 43 routines for an average score of 9.8218 per routine as a true freshman. The Raleigh, N.C. native began her sophomore campaign by leading the Gymdogs in three of four events, posting a pair of 9.875s on vault and bars and claiming a 9.8 in her first-ever beam routine. The sophomore anchored the Gymdogs on vault, bars and floor. Individually, Snead tied for the fourth-highest score on vault and fifth-best score on bars in the country. Gigi On That Beat Junior Gigi Marino quietly produced great numbers on floor in 2016, posting the 10thbest season all-time at UGA in the event. Marino s total of 157.975 points was second-best on the team, trailing only All-American Mary Beth Box and her 158.2125. Marino s career numbers are equally impressive, if not more. In fact, if the Scottsdale, Ariz. native can maintain her career routine average on floor and can compete in 16 meets per year, she will finish as Georgia s all-time leading scorer on floor for a career. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native opened her junior campaign with a 9.825 on floor at LSU, leading all Gymdogs in the event. Fresh Faces Georgia brought in three newcomers for 2017 - freshmen Rachel Dickson, Jordyn Pedersen and Sabrina Vega. Dickson, a native of Canton, Michigan, was a six-time Junior Olympics National Team member and won three Level 10 national championships on bars. Dickson is looking to contribute on all four events this season for the Gymdogs. Pedersen, a native of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, is an accomplished gymnast on the international stage. She was a member of the Canadian national team from 2008 through 2015 and was part of the bronze-winning Canadian team at the 2012 Pac Rim Championships. Most recently an alternate for Canada at World Championships in 2014, Pedersen also was on the gold-winning team at the Canada Winter Games in 2011. Pedersen has adjusted well from the world of elite gymnastics, and she has been praised by Durante for her hard work that she has put in so far in her freshman campaign. Vega brings the highest profile to Athens after spending five years as a USA National Team member. She competed at the Olympic trials in 2012, finishing 10th, and was a member of the 2011 World Championships winning team. A standout on beam and floor with an electric personality, Vega has brought elite gymnastics and tons of energy to the team. Dickson s Busy Opener Freshman Rachel Dickson stayed busy during Georgia s opening-night meet with LSU, competing on bars, vault and beam. The newcomer from Canton, Mich. joined Ashlyn Broussard and Sydney Snead as current Georgia gymnasts who competed in three events in their first collegiate meet. Mo Takes the Moonwalk Senior and Athens native Morgan Reynolds assumed the responsibility of taking over the moonwalk tradition at Georgia. She is the fifth Gymdog to perform the moonwalk on the balance beam, following Nikki Childs, Cassidy McComb, Lindsey Cheek and Mary Beth Box. Reynolds and Cheek had been teammates at Georgia Elite Gymnastics at the club level, and Reynolds spent three years on the same team as Box. Jazz Hands Outside of the Hedges Bulldog fans are familiar with tailback Sony Michel s touchdown celebration of jazz hands. Junior Vivi Babalis, a friend of Michel, decided to give a nod to the football standout and incorporated the jazz hands into her floor routine.

Michel got a look at the move during the team s annual Sneak Peek, held Dec. 16 at the Suzanne Yoculan Gymnastics Center. The junior tailback tweeted his commentary on the performance, saying Music had me ready to flip. Professional performance. Five-star jazz hands - done at perfection. Lo Taking Flight Senior Lauren Johnson is entering this year with the possibility of it being her final year of competition for the red and black. She missed her sophomore year due to an ACL tear, so the possibility of applying for a redshirt is real. However, she has already made her plans for what she wants to do after leaving UGA. Johnson announced at the team s Pumpkin Peek in October that once she hangs up the grips she ll be joining the U.S. Air Force as a medical officer. Johnson comes from a military family, although the rest of her relatives were in the Army. Johnson says her choice came down to Air Force or Navy, with the wings taking the edge because of the opportunity to work with the medical staff. She and fellow Gymdog Hayley Sanders, whose father is a Marine Corps veteran, appeared on the SEC Network as part of the channel s Veterans Day coverage and were interviewed by Dari Nowkhah about the significance of the holiday in their lives. We Meet Again 2017 Schedule Tabbed Toughest The website NCAA Gym News declared that the Gymdogs have the toughest schedule of any team in the country for 2017. Using a mathematical formula based around the final 2016 standings, the site determined that Georgia s 2017 opponents had the highest average final rank of any team in the country, just shy of No. 11. The top four teams in the poll all hail from the SEC, including Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and LSU. This season, the Gymdogs open with back-to-back road meets at No. 2 LSU and No. 8 Auburn, before hosting four consecutive home meets against N.C. State, Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky. Another tough string of meets away from Stegeman then follow, with contests at Florida, in St. Charles, Mo. against LSU, Oklahoma and Missouri, and then at defending national champion Oklahoma on Feb. 24. Georgia closes out its regular season with home meets against storied programs Alabama and Utah. Gymdogs on TV The 2016 slate of SEC Network televised gymnastics meets, including the weekly Friday Night Heights promotion, was successful enough that the network decided to further increase its coverage in 2017. The Gymdogs will be the network s main event, the Friday night, 7 p.m. broadcast, in each of the first two weeks of the season for their highly-anticipated showdowns with LSU and Auburn, two teams that the Gymdogs saw plenty in 2016. The team will be live on the SEC Network five total times in the regular season, highlighted by a rare Sunday meet against Alabama in one of collegiate gymnastics fiercest rivalries. Fan Attendance Record Among notable achievements in 2016, the Gymdog fans came out in record numbers for the team s six home meets in the regular season. Georgia averaged The teams last met at the 2016 NCAA Semifinals, where the Gymdogs edged Auburn 196.725-195.100. Auburn got the better of the Gymdogs in the regular season (195.700-197.550) and at the SEC Championships by a narrow margin of 196.975-196.850. Georgia at LSU The Durante File Georgia head coach Danna Durante is entering her fifth year as the head coach at the University of Georgia. The Gymdogs reached the Super Six in three of her first four years, and two seniors in 2016 - Brandie Jay (vault) and Brittany Rogers (bars) - became the first national champions under Durante s direction. Over her first four years at UGA, the Gymdogs have amassed 68 wins (17 per year), five SEC Individual Titles, 20 All-SEC honors and 46 All-America Honors by 10 gymnasts. Prior to her stint at UGA, Durante was the head coach at Cal (2012), an assistant coach at Nebraska (2003-2011) and an assistant at Washington (1999-2002). She was an All-Pac 12 gymnast at Arizona State and served as a USAG Elite Level judge from 1996 to 2000. Durante s Record Year (School) Record Conf. When factoring in the crowd at the NCAA regional hosted by the Gymdogs, the 2016 fan attendance ranked seventh in the program s history with a staggering average of 9,212, a number the team hopes to build upon further in 2017. Coaching Staff Grows The Gymdogs kept national champions Brandie Jay and Brittany Rogers close by after the end of their eligibility, serving as graduate coach and undergraduate coach, respectively. The duo were the first individual champions under head coach Danna Durante, and they were Georgia s 19th and 20th individual NCAA champions. They are joined as additions to the gymnastics staff by former All-American Mary Beth Box, who also was a 2016 graduate, who is serving as the team s graduate assistant. G.R.O.W. Info One of head coach Danna Durante s main messages to this year s team has been to find and own their voices. In turn, Durante and the team decided to use the team s platform to be a positive influence on young boys and girls. For four of the six home meets this year, four Gymdogs will share a message that has to do with one of the team s core values with a group of youth. The motive is to assist the next generation in finding themselves and being confident in who they are, as well as sharing tips on how to reach their potential and goals. #AskDanna Offers Glimpse Inside Starting in the fall of 2016, head coach Danna Durante gave fans and media an inside look to the Georgia Gymdogs with her weekly Periscope show, #AskDanna. Since its inception, Durante has hosted every gymnast on the roster for a live conversation that is available to the public, covering many aspects of the Gymdogs lives that may not have been public prior to the show s inception. All old shows are available on the team s official Periscope account (UGAGymnastics) and remain on the team s Twitter timeline. Gymdogs Sign Class of 2021 Four gymnasts put pen to paper and signed with the Georgia Gymdogs, and it was undoubtedly one of the most impressive groups yet that have signed with UGA under Danna Durante. the class of 2021 consists of Sami Durante, Ashley Foss, Marissa Oakley and Emily Schild, a group of four gritty gymnasts with a fiery competitiveness. Sami Durante comes to Georgia after fighting off injuries for the last portion of her club career. She was the 2015 Region 8 Level 10 all-around, vault and beamchampion as well as a 2014 and 2015 Junior Olympic Level 10 National Championship qualifier. Ashley Foss wrapped up her pre-georgia career as the 2016 Junior Olympic Level 10 National Beam champion. She had also previously appeared in the 2012 and 2013 Secret US Classic, 2012 Visa Championships, and the 2011 and 2012 American Classics. Marissa Oakley also has been fighting nagging leg injuries, but she still put together an impressive résumé. She shined in 2014, appearing at the P&G Championships, Secret U.S. Classic and American Classic. She was a Junior Olympic Level 10 Nationals qualifier from 2011 through 2014, and she was the 2013 Level 10 Region 5 bars and all-around champion. Emily Schild rounds out the class, and she has no shortage of accomplishments as she prepares to join the Gymdogs. Schild has represented the U.S. in international competitions including the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto and twice in Jesolo (2015 and 2016). She also competed at the 2016 Olympic Trials (finishing 8th) and in the 2016 P&G Championships and Secret U.S. Classic, where she finished fifth in the all-around.
