USU is 45-21 all-time against the Spartans including a 13-13 road record, and 11-4 all-time against the Rainbow Warriors including a 2-3 road record. W, 74-57 --- LOUISIANA TECH W, 59-49 --- NEW MEXICO STATE Utah State went 2-0 last week as it defeated Louisiana Tech (74-57) and New Mexico State (59-49) in a pair of Western Athletic Conference home games. Against the Bulldogs, senior forward Tai Wesley had 14 points, while senior guard Pooh Williams and junior guard Brockeith Pane each had 11 points. Pane also had nine assists and seven rebounds in the contest, while senior forward Nate Bendall and senior guard Brian Green both had 10 points. Utah State finished the game shooting 46.6 percent (27-58), including 25.0 percent from three-point range (4-16) and a season-high 88.9 percent at the free throw line (16-18). Louisiana Tech shot 42.9 percent overall (24-56), including 28.6 percent from behind the arc (6-21) and 75.0 percent at the free throw line (3-4). Against NMSU, Wesley was the only player to score in double-figures for USU as he finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Senior forward Nate Bendall had 11 rebounds to go along with four points, while junior forward Brady Jardine had five points and 10 boards. Utah State shot just 41.5 percent (22-53), including just 5-of-16 (.313) from three and just 10-of-17 (.588) at the charity stripe. New Mexico State finished the game by shooting just 37.7 percent (20-53) and just 25.0 percent from three-point range (4-16). NMSU also converted just 5-of-13 (.385) free throws. MEN S TENNIS... W, 4-3 --- at New Mexico State Utah State posted a 1-1 record during the week as it lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (7-0) and defeated New Mexico State (4-3) for its first Western Athletic Conference win in four years. In its win against NMSU, Utah State captured the opening point in doubles play as sophomore Sven Poslusny and senior Bryan Marchant notched a 9-8 win at the No. 1 spot, while seniors Jakob Asplund and Nikita Ryashchenko recorded an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot. In singles play, Asplund posted a straight sets win at the No. 2 spot (6-4, 6-4), while senior Alex Thatcher won in three sets at the No. 5 spot (6-4, 2-6, 6-4), and Ryashchenko won in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) at the No. 6 spot. L, 74-91 --- at Louisiana Tech L, 71-75 --- at New Mexico State Utah State went 0-2 on the road last week as it lost a pair of Western Athletic Conference games at Louisiana Tech (91-74) and at New Mexico State (75-71). Against the Lady Techsters, junior forward Ashlee Brown posted her seventh double-double of the season with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Devyn Christensen added 18 points, while fellow sophomore guard Jenna Johnson scored 10 points. USU finished the game by shooting 35.7 percent from the field (25-70), 18.8 percent from three-point range (3-16) and 84.0 percent at the free throw line (21-25). LTU shot 45.2 percent (28-62) and was just 4-of-15 (.267) from behind the arc, but converted 31-of-44 (.705) free throws. Against NMSU, Brown led USU with 19 points and Christensen scored 13, while senior guard Alice Coddington had 11 points and five rebounds. Utah State finished the game shooting 42.9 percent (24-56), including 36.4 percent from three (4-11) and 86.4 percent at the free throw line (19-22). New Mexico State shot 46.2 percent for the game (24-52). NMSU was also 10-of-24 (.417) from behind the arc and 17-of-20 (.850) from the free throw line. GYMNASTICS... Contact: Zach Fisher (435) 797-2066 Sat., Jan. 29--- at Brigham Young/Iowa State, 12 p.m. Utah State s gymnastics team (1-4, 0-1) continues its 2011 season with a tri-meet at Brigham Young and versus Iowa State on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 12 p.m. (MT). 2nd, 191.350 --- at San Jose State/vs. Wisconsin-Eau Claire Utah State gymnastics earned its first win of the season by finishing second at the San Jose State tri-meet with Wisconsin-Eau Claire last weekend. The Aggies posted a 191.350 with a 47.775 on vault, 47.700 on bars, 47.150 on beam and a 48.725 on floor. The host Spartans won the meet with a 194.700, while the Blugolds of UWEC were third with a 181.675. Freshman Paige Jones was third in the all-around with a career-best 38.450, while finishing second on vault with 9.725, tying a season-best and tied for third on floor with a 9.825, also a new season-high. Junior Haley Hogan tied for second on beam with a season-best 9.675, while fellow junior Rebecca Holliday was tied for third with a 9.700. Contact: Travis Hansen (435) 512-5861 Fri.-Sat., Jan. 28-29 --- at Boise State, Utah State s men s and women s indoor track and field teams will continue its 2011 season on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29 in Boise, Idaho, as it competes in the Jacksons Invitational. --- at Washington State Utah State s men and women s track and field teams continued to execute at a high level at the Cougar Invitational hosted by Washington State with eight event titles and 29 top-three finishes. Seniors Armahd Lewis and Clint Silcock, along with junior Chio Lopez led the Utah State men capturing victories in their respective events. Lewis nearly matched his career-best of 6.80 as he ran 6.81 to win the 60m event two weeks in a row. Silcock won the high jump, also for the second week in a row, with a jump of 6-10.75 (2.10m), while fellow Aggie Eric Follett finished third in the event with a height of 6-06.75 (2.00m), his career-best. Lopez saw his first action of the season as he captured first-place in the 3,000m (8:25.52) right ahead of teammate Daniel Howell (8:31.14). Juniors Katelyn Heiner and Spela Hus won their events to lead the Aggie women as Heiner broke the tape first in the 400m with a 56.50 time, while sophomore Aubrie Haymore (58.10) and freshman Kylie Hirschi (58.57) finished third and fourth, respectively. Hus won the shot put with a throw of 44-11.50 (13.70m), while seniors Lindsey Spencer (42-07.00-12.98m) and Shannon Prince (42-07.00-12.98m) took third and fourth, in that order. Utah State s men and women s 4x400 meter relay teams also captured wins. For the men, freshmen Parker Bluth, Jake Peterson and Tanner Hunt, and sophomore Tyler Killpack clocked in at 3:22.36. For the women, freshman Katelyn Heiner, sophomore Aubrie Haymore, and juniors Jessie Nielson and Kylie Hirschi finished with a time of 3:53.83. Also performing well for the men was junior John Johnson, who took second in the pole vault with his career-best jump of 15-11.00 (4.85m). Freshman AJ Boully placed third in the 60m hurdles (8.42) as did junior Jeff Alley in the 200m (22.82), with freshman Mikey Payne right behind Alley (22.90). Hunt took second in the 400m (49.50) with Boully s personal-best good enough for third-place (49.97). Junior Philip Noble finished second in the heptathlon (4,870 pts.) and senior Eric Larson clocked his personal-best in the 800m with a time of 1:56.15. Juniors Ruth Hilton (10:06.40) and Kim Quinn (10:15.86) finished one-two in the 3,000m. Taking third-place for the women was senior Heidi Peterson in the 60m hurdles (8.92), sophomore Mercedes Blackwood in the 200m (26.44) and senior Alexis Meyer in the 800m (2:21.45). Junior Sonia Grabowska and sophomore Spencer Hall led Utah State during the first day of the meet as Grabowska won in the pole vault with a jump of 13-03.75 (4.06m), which stands as a Western Athletic Conference-best this season, and Hall won the weight throw with a mark of 53-04.50 (16.27m). Also performing well for the women was freshman standout Chari Hawkins as she took second in the pentathlon (3,460 pts.), followed by sophomore Jen Schiess (2,969 pts.) and senior Camille Fehlberg (2,878 pts.). Senior Lindsey Spencer was the top Aggie in the weight throw, placing third with a personal-best of 55-01.50 (16.80m). Junior Spela Hus finished closely behind Spencer in fifth-place with a personal-best of 49-07.25 (15.12m). Junior Damian Szade posted a career-best in the long jump, finishing second with a jump of 23-06.25 (7.17m). WOMEN S TENNIS... Contact: Couper Sorenson (435) 840-2007 Tues., Jan. 25 --- at Idaho State, 1:30 p.m. Utah State s women s tennis team (0-0) will begin its spring season on Tuesday, Jan. 25 with a match at Idaho State at 1:30 p.m. USU competed in three open tournaments during the fall season and was led by senior Hailey Swenson who had a 10-3 record in singles play. Other Aggies to compete during the fall season include senior Taylor Perry, juniors Monica Abella, Brianna Harris and Julie Tukuafu, sophomores Jenny Phillips, Kristina Voytsekhovich, Jaclyn West, Whitney White and Mersadi Wilkins, and freshman Kimberly Watts.
