Slane webmaster@tulsafsc.com Inside Edge Editor Judy Banner Judy@tulsafsc.com THE INSIDE EDGE November/ December 2007 J. Barlow Nelson - A Good Life Recognized Many of you current members know Barlow as a Judge for the local competitions and tests. His figure skating life is so broad and deep as to inspire recognition for his service to our club and to the sport of figure skating. Recently, Barlow made the decision to move to Chicago and in so doing he wanted to unravel from many of his involvements with U. S. Figure Skating. His one request of us was a continued link with the Tulsa Figure Skating Club, his home club. Personally, I have known Barlow as a valued friend and attorney for more than thirty years. But, I did not know much, specifically, about his figure skating life until I started the TFSC History Project about four or five years ago. His record is extraordinary. He entered club life in a mouse costume for a mid-1940 s IceTravaganza exhibition. He quickly became a very fine competitive skater and believe it or not, he went to Nationals ten years, yes 10 years, in his competitive skating life. In fact he was the Alternate for Men s Championship for the 1960 Olympics, which Tulsa s David Jenkins won. He then went on to a career as a USFS National Judge and an ISU International Judge. He also was a Director and a Committee Chair of USFS. Most recently he joined the Hall of Fame and Museum Board of Directors and serves as Treasurer. Barlow served his time as a Governor and Officer of TFSC and was always supportive of the judging requirements for local competitions and tests. The TFSC Board of Governors took note of this event and voted Barlow to Honorary Membership, per the Bylaws of the club. It was an easy decision to honor such a strong and committed contributor as Barlow. Another lesson to be drawn from his life is that figure skating can offer involvement and rewards in several forms at all ages over many years. Young people tend to think one Barlow Nelson, age 16, pictured with his mother, Mrs. Frank Nelson, after winning the Mens Novice Title at the 1953 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Hershey, PA. year is an interminable length of time, but we measure Barlow s contributions in decades, more than sixty years. Fortunately, we have a number of members who measure their figure skating lifetime in decades and their contributions are invaluable to the club Skaters to Represent Tulsa Figure Skating Club at U.S. Junior National Championships! John Martens President, TFSC The dance teams of Brittany Schmucker & Charles Meadows and Alexandria Sipes & Stephen Brower coached by Kim Borgos will represent Tulsa at the 2007 U.S. Junior National championships. The competition will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah November 26th through December 1st. Official send-off with a skating exhibition and press conference will be held at the Oilers Ice Center November 24th at 10:45 am. Skaters representing the Tulsa Figure Skating Club at Junior Nationals in the recent past include Andrew Charrier in 2003, 2004 and Cory Babb and Ashley Babb in 1996. If you are a icenetwork subscriber, you can watch the competition on your home computer. For more information on icenetwork see page 7. Charles Meadows, Brittany Schmucker, Alexandria Sipes, & Stephen Brower Coach Kim Borgos Congratulations and Good Luck!!

The Inside Edge Page 2 November/December 2007 Tulsa Figure Skating Club Welcomes New and Renewing Sponsors The Tulsa Figure Skating Club welcomes renewing sponsor Anja Rogers/Senior Star Living Woodland Terrace & Burgundy Place. Senior Star Living has upgraded to a Silver Level sponsor this year. Ochsner Chiropractic and Q Group, Inc. have both joined us as a bronze level sponsors. We welcome our new and renewing sponsors and thank you for your support. Prospective sponsors can choose to participate with us at the Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze level with annual funds of $2,500, $1000, $500, or $250 respectively. The main benefit to the sponsor is in the form of advertising and name recognition. Twenty percent of the sponsor money solicited by a skater is deposited into that skater s individual account and managed by the club treasurer. For example, if you solicit a sponsor for $500, one hundred dollars of that sponsorship comes directly back to you! You can use that money to help defray personal skating costs such as coaching fees, ice time, equipment costs, competition fees, etc It is a great program that benefits everyone, the club, the skater, and the sponsor. We have sponsor packets with a professional looking brochure and cover letter. If you would like to approach a potential sponsor, contact Judy Banner at judy@tulsafsc.com for a packet. See page 8 for a compete listing of current club sponsors. Q Group, Inc. Club Members in the Spotlight Margaret Anne Graham Holt Receives Central High School Honor Margaret Ann Graham Holt The Graham family has been very involved with the Tulsa Figure Skating Club over the years. Many of you know Dr. Hugh Graham as a figure skating judge. Dr. Graham and his sister, Margaret Anne, have both enjoyed distinguished skating careers. Margaret Anne was recently honored at a Tulsa Central High School awards dinner The following was excerpted from an October 24th Tulsa World article By DANNA SUE WALKER World Staff Writer Tulsa Central High School was and is a very motivational place from which to start the journey. Many of its graduates have gone on to achieve great things. Every three or four years, the Tulsa Central High School Foundation honors some of its most impressive graduates with induction into the Tulsa Central Hall of Fame. This year's honorees are Roxana Lorton, Margaret Anne Graham Holt and Billy Tubbs. Schmucker & Strnad Earn USFS Gold Medals Brittany Schmucker, coached by Kim Borgos, and Nikki Strnad coached by Martina Watkins & Boyko Alexiev both became USFS gold medalists by passing the senior level moves in the field test November 10th at the Oilers Ice Center. Senior moves in the field is the highest of eight moves tests offered by USFS. As such, it demands precise execution of difficult elements in order to receive a passing mark. During Graham Holt's senior year at Central, she was Ladies Figure Skating Champion for the Midwestern Championship of the United States. In 1953, she became the first woman at TU to receive an athletic letter. She competed on three U.S. World Figure Skating teams in Milan, Italy; Davos, Switzerland; and Oslo, Norway. In 1997, she was honored as a Distinguished Alumna for TU. Brittany Schmucker Nikki Strnad Congratulations!

The Inside Edge Page 6 November/December 2007 Club News & Events Fall Harvest Party, October 27, 2007 Come out and support our dance teams who are headed for the U.S. Junior National Championships as they perform exhibitions of their dance programs November 24th at 10:45am at the Oilers Ice Center. Exhibitions will be followed by a press conference. The exhibition will take up a very small portion of club ice time. We try to keep the club ice sessions as open skating for club members, however, due to the lack of ice time available, the club will at times have to use some club ice time to accommodate situations such as this exhibition or an occasional test session. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Club Jackets We offer two different club jacke designs. Bottom left is a windsuit type jacket. Bottom right is a lighter weight and more fitted design. Both jackets are personalized with the skater s name. Matching pants are available with either design. They are custom jackets so measurements are required. Orders can be taken at any time. The jackets are made by different companies. If you are interested in ordering the windsuit type jacket (bottom left) contact Kathy Gibson at Kathy@tulsafsc.com. For the fitted type jacket, contact Judy Banner at Judy@tulsafsc.com.
