PEACE BALL ACTION MAE SOT TOURNAMENT 2016 Sponsorship request for Football tournament Background Peace Ball Action Mae Sot Tournament was held for the first time on May, 2015 in the border town of Mae Sot, Tak Province, Thailand. About 252 migrant children attended and made this event a great success. A few months after the tournament, I received a mail with a picture from one of the children that I had given a Peace Ball Action T-shirt as a present during the soccer tournament, with the quote " When is the next soccer tournament?" After last year soccer tournament, these children have been expecting and practicing a lot for the upcoming tournament. Objectives The purpose of holding the 2 nd Annual Peace Ball Action Mae Sot Soccer Tournament 2016, is to give Mae Sot children the opportunity to have hope and to dream. By continuing to hold this football tournament, these children will pursue their dreams of winning, which will encourage them to keep playing soccer. And by keeping to play soccer, they will learn about life skills such as "cooperation", "teamwork", "responsibility", and "honesty" that will help them to adapt in a global community. I hope that the children learn the importance of having a dream and hope as part of the tournament and they will work hard for success. This tournament plays also a role as a place for international exchange. By connecting people together, regardless of the nationality, it is one the contributions of Peace Ball Action in football. By understanding the value of Peace Ball Action Thailand soccer tournament, we would appreciate your support and sponsorship. 2

PEACE BALL ACTION THAILAND? Peace Ball Action began in Japan, based on the policy to contribute to the world peace through soccer. Peace Ball Action Thailand was started by Daiki Higuchi (THAI HONDA FC) as the director of this organization, from July 2014 in Thailand. We have donated soccer balls to children inside and outside of Thailand. Mae Sot, a border town of Myanmar and Northwest Thailand, is a one of the main destination of our work in partnership with NGO Help Without Frontier(HWF) and Play On Side. In Mae Sot, there are many learning centres for migrants and many immigrants from Myanmar, ethic minorities, and stateless children. Those children have a passion to play soccer that Peace Ball Action Thailand aims to keep supporting as much as we can. Brief on Migrant Children and Football There are over 3 million migrants, stateless persons and ethnic minorities residing in Thailand. It is estimated that there are more than 400,000 migrant children who are under the age of 18. Most of them migrate to Thailand with their families from Myanmar, Lao PDR and Cambodia or in the case that the parents have settled, they are born in Thailand and become children of migrants living in provinces such as Tak, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phang Nga, Ranong, Samutsakorn and Bangkok. Unfortunately, less than 20 percent of the children have access to education due to various reasons such as poverty, nature of migration, lack of knowledge and support from family and community, etc. which cause more than 300,000 migrant children to be out-of-school. Migrant Learning Centers(MLC) have been the most comfortable places for these children to obtain education as they often face lots of challenges in other public schools such as language barriers, difficulties from textbooks, learning in Thai environment and cultural shock. In Tak provinces, there are about 65 4
MLCs and there are about 13,000 learners at these MLCs. Teachers are mostly volunteers with low salary and live in poor conditions. Most of them are very committed to teach these children 7 days a week. Despite such difficult situations, many children have a lot of passion for football and they play the football almost every day. Many of them don t have football shoes. When they play, they are so absorbed into it and forget all pains and difficulties they face in their lives. Some MLCs have football pitches which are very much hand-made. Objective The main purpose of this tournament is to give a hope and dream to children through soccer. Specifically, The following 6 measures were included. 1. Providing the children a chance to play soccer. 2. Gender Equality & Integration. (Girl teams participate in this tournament.) 3. Interaction the children with Professional soccer players. 4. Interaction among the children in Migrant Learning Centres. 5. Opportunity to know the existence and the situation of migrants and ethnic minorities, stateless children. 6. Enhancing awareness of Peace Ball Action. 5
The event last year At this tournament, 252 children attended in total, including ethnic minorities, stateless children, and immigrant from Myanmar who commute to Migrant Learning Center (MLC) which exist about 65 in Tak province. On the first day, the games followed a single-elimination style, and within the day, the best two team were able to proceed to the final. 6
The second day was New Blood vs Ah You Uoo. The match was exciting and both teams deserved the final match. Finally, New Blood took the chance of the goal, won by 3-0. And they became the first champion. At a prize-giving ceremony, Japanese pro soccer players gave a throphy and medals to each teams one by one. After the awards ceremony, 4 Japanese soccer players in Thai league, including Higuchi, the director of Peace Ball Action Thailand, Kawamura, Kushida, and Kato held a soccer clinic to the children. 7
Many of the children in Mae Sot seemed to be not familiar with professional soccer players. Normally, children in Bangkok come to get an autograph from us when they hear that we are pro soccer players. However, children in Mae Sot were different. They do not understand what those autograph mean. There were even some children who said It makes my T-shirt dirty when we asked them to sign their T-shirts. This event was originally planned for giving them a dream through communication with professional soccer players, but actually it was an opportunity to let them recognize what professional soccer players are. 8
