Program Our Pros - Zack and Wil Our Pro Zack Courtyard Saving our Trees USTA News W55+6.0 Quick Tennis Links Zack's Insights... College Invitational Coming at Silverado... SNMWTL NEWS... Sportabout Marcus Perry Real Estate.. Greetings! H.I.T.S. Program

Coach Alex Lorraine (right) admires a young superstar's new forehand developed during one of the six H.I.T.S lessons. See H.I.T.S. article below. A Message from our President... A message from our President Here we are... the end of August nearing us...harvest upon us. The days getting shorter as the sun moves quickly, dipping behind the mountains of our narrow valley. Farmers, or vintners as we call them in our "hometown", find the challenge of tending to their vines and vineyards as the daylight hours shorten. Many evenings, you find the lights of tractors dotted throughout the acres of our vineyards prepping for "the perfect harvest". And then there is us - the avid tennis player. With only eight courts, how do we get all of our matches on the limited courts that we have? When is there time for our Round Robin or Mixer? Will we have to skip a month... two... or three? The challenges are all real - relative to our space and time at the moment and in life. The Board of Directors have heard, and listened. We understand the need for court time - to just be able to "drop in" and play a fun or competitive game of tennis - during day light hours. We have come up with a simple solution of starting only one match at 9:00 am. This will allow for more court availability on the weekends for drop-ins. Zack is ready to attempt this feat, but he (and we) also understand that with the solution of one challenge, brings other challenges. As a captain, please understand that you will not be able to play all your matches at 9:00 am. They will be spread out throughout the day. We only have eight courts and limited daylight hours, and although we have made some improvements, lights have not been installed for evening tennis. Be supportive. Be understanding. The "why" of the scheduling changes is a result of the feedback we have heard from our members. So, come on down - play some pickup tennis, participate in some clinics or take a lesson - we will have courts for you!

As our Club membership continues to grow (we have over 340 active members), our stewardship is even more important. We have had several instances where the Clubhouse doors have been left unlocked, and in some cases, wide open. If you have a Clubhouse key (Captains and Board Members), please ask those who are left when departing the Club if they have a key to lock up, or ask if you should lock the doors of the Clubhouse - even if you did not open them. Many times, players will show up early in the morning who have keys to the Clubhouse, open the doors, and then forget that not everyone has a key. They don't. So please be a good steward of the NVTA and be sure that the doors to the Clubhouse are locked when you depart. We are working hard to improve our Club and what we offer to our members, but we need your stewardship and support. Thank you for your participation. See you on the courts and at the Silverado College Invitational Sept 7th - 10th at Silverado Country Club and, this year, NVTA! Ericka Wel come New Members! We thank all members that have paid their 2017 Membership dues. We welcome the following new Members: Christina and Jade Barrett jade.b.barrett@gmail.com Scot Davis Liza Rios Dinoffer Susan German susaninpoway@cox.net Philip Harrison p.harrison13@sky.com Edward Peck Heather Teague "One Team" memberships are a "one time" offer only to introduce the club to those who have not played at NVTA. If you had a "One Team" Membership in the past, you must now join as an Individual Membership or as a Family Membership. As a reminder, your membership dues for 2017 was due January 31. Individual Membership is $100.00 and Family Membership is $125.00. You may pay your dues by the following methods: Drop your check off with Zack at the NVTA Clubhouse Send your check, payable to NVTA to PO Box 2225, Napa, CA 94558 Log on to our website at www.napatennis.org, click on Membership and scroll to the bottom to use PayPal. We thank you for your continued membership and your support. If you have any membership questions, please call Dan Hunt at (707 326-3425.) We will see you on the courts! Your NVTA Membership Dues is tax-deductible. NVTA is a 501(3)c non-profit-- Don't forget to include this donation on your taxes in April. ****If you are having difficulty seeing all the great photos in our newsletter, please be sure to click on"display Images" on your computer.**** Captain' s Corner

Got Filtered Water?? Yes and isn't it nice that you or your teammates no longer have to schlep a case of bottled water and ice up to the courts?! The new water filtration system was very expensive. The board felt it was a good investment in the long run and we are being environmentally conscious by eliminating over 500 plastic water bottles in only two months. If your team is loving this new addition in the courtyard, why not think about a team donation to NVTA to defray the cost of the fountain? All Players Must be NVTA Members Please make sure all your team members are current NVTA members and have paid their annual dues. Please see our "One Team Membership" rule mentioned above. Locking the Clubhouse Doors and Court Gates As you leave the courts, please be sure all doors and gates are closed and locked. It is the captain's responsibility. If you are last at the courts with keys, you must lock the clubhouse. We work too hard to keep our club and courtyard beautiful, please don't encourage vandalism. Reserving Courts for Matches Captains: PLEASE email Zack, our court scheduler, of cancelled matches so he can take the match off the calendar. It is inconvenient for other captains and NVTA members who check the calendar to see if matches are scheduled. Please be considerate of your fellow captains and all NVTA members. Members -- We need your hel p!! The 6th Annual College Invitational will be held September 7-10 at Silverado Resort & Spa AND NVTA. Are you an empty nester? An extra bedroom or two? The College Invitational is fast approaching and we still need housing for a few players and coaches. You never know...i remember several years ago a friend housed a tall, lanky kid from Georgia. His legs hung over the edge of the bed but he didn't care; he was happy to be in a nice house with a nice family. And that kid grew up to be John Isner!! All you need to do is provide a bedroom, bath, a little tlc, breakfast snack and get them to their matches on time. We also are looking for donations for our Silent Auction and wine donations for the wine tasting on Saturday, September 9 at Silverado. We need volunteers for the Tasting Lounge and the Silent Auction. Can't house a player or volunteer? Donate Lunch one day for 16 hungry, growing, appreciative college players. If you would like to house a coach or player (or a team) please click here to email Quinn Saine or call him at 707.257.5541. Members -- Want to pl ay with a col l ege

The H.I.T.S Program was a huge success. It's a six week program, one hour every Saturday afternoon. We had two groups, one starting at 4pm and the next at pm. Despite the fact that nearly every Saturday afternoon during the program we experienced 95+ degree temperatures, the kids had a great time and learned the foundation of tennis. They received a life lesson at the end of each clinic. H.I.T.S. is an acronym for Honesty, Inspiration, Teamwork and Sportsmanship. This program will be offered again next summer and hopefully we will see some of our superstars return! Led by coaches Wil and Zack, the volunteers were trained to be a H.I.T.S. coach. The coaches were: Wil Cochrane, Carmen Contreras, Kyle Cuddy, Lorraine Fazzolare, Alexandra Lorraine, Zack Miskel, Chuck Simonds, Yong Willendrup and Zdenek Zahradnicek.

Pictured clockwise from top left: coach Chuck is challenged by 'best dressed' T; coach Lorraine watches on as the girls lead the boys in the race to the net; coaches Lorraine and Kyle conduct a 'watch the ball' exercise; coaches Alex and Kyle give a yoga session focusing on stretching and balance; Bella Sims (Terrance's daughter) is loving her last day as she gives us a Starmont tattoo fist pump; coach Lorraine works on hand/eye practice; coach Kyle works with Odin Zahradnicek (Zdenek's grandson) and T; coach Chuck looks at young athletes wondering who will be the next Andre and Stefi; the coaches--kyle, Chuck, Wil, Lorraine, Zack, Alex and Carmen (not pictured Yong and Zdenek) A special thanks to Wil and Zack for volunteering their time and making this such a successful program for NVTA! Watch a 2 minute video about why families are loving this new USTA NorCal program! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmyyncm7ej8&t=3s For More Information: http://www.norcal.usta.com/hits/ Our Pros are AWESOME! Wil Cochrane and Zack Miskel took on the pros at Silverado a few weeks ago. It was a great match and very close as all players stayed on serve until Will and Zack went ahead 5-4 and served out the match for an NVTA 6-4 victory over SCC's pros Quinn Saine and Ian Risenhoover.

As we enjoy the shade from the hot summer sun, we will think of you and smile. Left photo: Wil Cochrane, Zack Miskel, Quinn Saine, Ian Risenhoover. Right Photo: Wil serving, Zack at the net. Doesn't everyone's service motion look like Wil's? If not, you better get a lesson with Wil soon! Are you on your toes at the net? If not, you better get a lesson with Zack soon! Zack is on the Winner' s Pl atform Again Zack Miskel and Saint Mary's college teammate Marco Sanchez were finalists in the 5.0 Men's Doubles at Silverado's NTRP tournament last week. Courtyard -- Member Saves our Trees A big thank you to member Nancy Baty for donating the tree trimming cost to take care of our trees! You may ask why this came about - we did! Once we thanked Nancy for her generosity, we then asked her what propelled her to decide to donate this service. Her response was: "When I was working as referee for the Super Seniors Sectionals (at NVTA), Napa was having 100 degree temperatures. The trees saved the day for me. When Bob mentioned removing/trimming them, I knew that could not happen and I was determined to do something about it."

Thank you, Nancy for saving our trees. NVTA Co-Founder Howard Jamison We were saddened to learn that Howard Jamison passed away on July 3, 2017, after his brief battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with Howard's wife, Geri, and his family. Howard Jamison was instrumental in developing tennis throughout the Napa Valley, starting on the Napa Valley College tennis team and later coaching tennis teams throughout the valley. Howard was an NVTA founding father. We thank Howard for his hard work and determination to develop NVTA, as we are currently in our 50 year Celebration. Howard was NVTA Board President in 1977 and again in 1983. Howard was also responsible for starting the tennis program at Crane Park, in St. Helena.
