Both teams exchanged drives in the first quarter before King s drove down to the Cougar 15 just before the end of the quarter. Beginning the second quarter with a fourth and long situation, King s took a 3-0 lead on a 33 yard Ryan Fransen field goal. Later in the quarter, Koa Wilkins found Karl Sather on a screen pass in the right flat. Sather was able to break the initial tackle and avoid another on his way to a 70 yard touchdown run down the right side of the field to give the Knights a 10 point lead that they took in the locker room. At half-time the coaching staff emphasized two things. Stop #11 (Brett Bustad) and protect the football and we ll win the game. In the third quarter, King s was driving to score for the third time when Lakewood linebacker Curtis Patton scooped up a backwards lateral and ran 61 yards for the score cutting the Knights lead to four points. On their next drive, King s matched the score when Fransen made a 21 yard circus catch over his right shoulder in the corner of the end zone to put King s back up on top by 10 points. In the fourth quarter Lakewood mounted a comeback that fell short. After scoring with 11 minutes remaining on a four yard pass from Paulmer Gregory to Matt Seiber, the Cougars two point attempt was shut down by an interception by Jake Welch. The Cougars mounted a final drive late in the fourth quarter that was thwarted by Welch s second interception of the night with under three minutes to play. With the win, the Knight s conference record improved to 2-0 (2-2 overall) and King s is currently alone in first place in the Cascade Conference. Outstanding individual performances were turned in by Sather, (5 receptions for 100 yards, one touchdown and 12 solo tackles) and Welch with two interceptions. King s next plays on Friday night against Sultan at home. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Inside the Huddle: What if they gave game balls in high school By Sam Roach One of the things that s always been entertaining in the NFL is that after a big win they always give out game balls (literally) to players who performed exceptionally well in recognition for a job well done. It got me to thinking what it would be like if high schools did the same thing. After Friday s game, in the Knights locker room there would have been many possible candidates. Laka Wilkins, in his first game this year contributed six solo tackles. Koa Wilkins was 11/15 for 150 yards, two touchdowns and rushed for another 32 yards. Defensively Cooper Wright had six solo tackles and Jackson Whitaker, Edmund Sundquist, Alex Sundquist, and Calvin Kispert all had three or more solo tackles. All of these performances were worthy of recog- nition but teams generally only give out two or three game balls. That being said, if they gave out game balls in high school, there are three guys who would have gotten one I suspect. Senior Ryan Fransen would have gotten the first one. Defensively Fransen recorded nine solo tackles and three receptions for 43 yards. The most important reception however was the 21 yard touchdown catch that came in the third quarter. Running what football purists call a, skinny post, Fransen adjusted his route to the outside and made a diving catch of a Wilkins pass that was placed where only he could get it for what turned out to be the game winning score. The second game ball would have to go to Karl Sather. Sather led all receivers with five receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown, a 70 yard screen pass in the second quarter that gave the Knights a comfortable cushion going into the intermission. Defensively, Sather recorded twelve solo tackles. The final game ball would have to go to Jake Welch. This is just my opinion but if they really did give out game balls in high school and if they only gave out one per game, he would get it. The rationale? Welch had to make four plays in the fourth quarter and if he didn t make every one of them, Lakewood wins the game. Track with me. In the fourth quarter from his free safety positon, Welch patrolled the middle of the field. Lakewood, clawing to mount a comeback, was relying on their short passing game, and Welch was up to the challenge. At the 11 minute mark, after the Cougars scored to cut King s lead to 16-12, Welch intercepted the two point conversion to keep the lead at four points. Later in the quarter, he broke up two passes that prevented Lakewood from extending drives. His most important play however came with three minutes remaining in the game. Lakewood was in King s territory, driving for what looked like would be a game winning score. Cougar quarterback Paulmer Gregory forced a pass and Welch made him pay. Welch knifed in front of the receiver and secured the interception. From there King s was able seal the win. Yes, in the end, it was a team victory but the game balls go out to Ryan Fransen, Karl Sather, and Jake Welch.
The EMAK Report: Down on the Farm: Overtime! J.V. Knights win 4 O.T. game by 1 By Sam Roach Duncan Cull, Jack Van Dyke, and Caleb Perry pace J.V. Knights victory It took four overtimes last Monday but thanks to a thirteen yard scoring pass from Ryker Roberts to Duncan Cull and a goal line stand on the two point conversion, the J.V. Knights notched their second win of the season with a 27-26 victory over Lakewood. King s jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first half on a run by Caleb Perry, a reception by Cull and a reception by Jack Van Dyke. Lakewood scored toward the end of the second period to cut the lead to 20-7 and by the 4th period had tied the game 20 all. In the overtime periods neither team could get much going offensively until the fourth overtime period when both teams scored. With the win the J.V. Knights Cascade Conference record improved to 1-1 (2-2 overall). The J.V. Knights next game will be next Monday at Sultan. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30. Photo by Ann Hermes Photo by Ann Hermes
The EMAK Report: The Scouting Report and Alumni News Sultan Turks The Knight s next opponent is the Sultan Turks. Sultan is currently 1-1 in Cascade Conference play and 2-2 overall. Sultan is in the 1 - A classification this year so this game will have extra post season implications. Offensively Sultan runs a Wing T formation and will run leads, sweeps, counters and play action passes. Defensively, Sultan will run a 3-4 and 4-3 front depending on what offense they encounter. Key players to watch for Sultan are Deion Bonilla QB/DL Sr., James MacKenzie RB/DB Sr., Matt Boller OL/LB Sr. Recently King s has dominated this series with the exception of last year when it took a goal line stand in the last two minutes to preserve a 7-3 Knights victory. 2013 King s 7 Sultan 3 Photo by Sam Roach 13 Mason Yale Mason Friedline 13 was a three year letterman at King s starting on three quarter final teams. He also was named 1st team all league offensive and defensive lines in 2011 and 2012. In addition, in 2012 Friedline was named on the all state offensive and defensive lines. Offered scholarships from 11 D-1 schools, Mason chose Yale. Currently, Mason Friedline is the starting right guard for the 2-0 Bulldogs who most recently defeated Army 49-43 in overtime.
