Grand Western Council At the Regional (GWAS) AGM in March your DCAS representatives to the GWAS Council changed to Jane Forrow and Estelle Edwick. Easter Challenge Two clubs submitted photos of their themed targets for an Easter fun shoot, Junction Archers and Plymouth Archers. They are both great (see page 2), well done. Hopefully this will inspire some more clubs to do fun shoots and send in your photos in the future. 1
Junction Archer s Easter Shoot Plymouth Archers Easter themed fun shoot. Our mascot bunny came out and was dressed accordingly in Easter Bonnet. It has survived several themed shoots over the last year. One of the main attractions this year was a fluffy bunny who was rather shot to pieces and was left in a sorry state. We ran a bobbie prize of a large red bean bag and one of our junior members won this. We held a successful Chinese raffle to which many of our members donated prizes and our Chairman baked his famous chocolate cake which he decorated in an Easter theme. This raised useful funds for the club. We also had a buffet and an Easter themed quiz. Although a lot of fun was had during this shoot and the previous shoots it has enabled us to raise funds for erecting a shed to house our equipment for outdoor shooting. 2
DCAS Senior County Team Do you want to make the team for this year s GWAS Intercounties? The selection criteria for the senior county team have been changed from previous years. The last date for rounds shot for selection inclusion will be SUNDAY 30th AUGUST 2015. In order to qualify for selection, you must shoot four 12 dozen rounds at a minimum distance appropriate to your gender. One of these rounds must be shot between the last weekend in July and the 30th August. The Team will then be picked based upon the handicaps obtained for those rounds. The County Records Officer and Senior County Team Manager will be responsible for this process. It will be a condition of accepting to shoot for the County that you agree to wear the official County Colours throughout the day. The shooting top was introduced in 2014, lower garments will remain self funded, but forward going Black is the preferred colour (although green or white will be accepted). Jimmy Sandoe (Senior County Team Manager) 3
DCAS Junior County Team Do you want to make the team this year? The GWAS Junior Intercounties are contested every September and DCAS will compete against the other counties in our region, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Dorset & Wiltshire. Each year the County selects a team to represent Devon and Cornwall, which has to include 8 Recurves, 3 compounds, 2 Barebow and 2 Longbow archers who can be in any age group (shooting the round appropriate to their age group) and has to include both boys and girls. Archers have to be affiliated to Archery GB, DCAS and GWAS. Do you want to be considered for the DCAS County Junior Team? Whether you are new to archery or experienced, if you go and shoot in 3 outdoor open competitions before the deadline in the middle of August you can submit your scores for team selection. See the DCAS website for full details. Grand Western Junior Winter Postal League Many DCAS juniors have taken part in the GWAS Junior Postal league during the indoor shooting season and done well. Coaching As a further move towards the development, improvement and confidence of coaching within DCAS and the GWAS region, there is another important meeting being held on Saturday 9 th May at Neroche Hall, Bickenhall, Nr. Taunton, TA3 6TY. (It is on the south side of the M5 accessed from J25 but also close to the A303). The meeting starts at 10.00 am and will finish around 4.00 pm. All DCAS coaches are urged to attend this meeting in order to have a say in the plans for the future of coaching. Experienced but unqualified archers that are currently teaching/helping in their club are also welcome to attend. Remember that none of us know it all we can all benefit and learn from each other. Bookings so far are looking good but there are more places available. So far bookings are DCAS 20 SCAA 15 DWAA 5 GAS 2 Notts 1. Book either through myself or directly at: RCO@GWAS.onmicrosoft.com This meeting is arranged as a result of a decision taken at the last GWAS Coaching AGM and is the latest in a series of actions that have been taken since last October 2014. If your club is struggling with coaching/development this event could also be relevant to your club. The more we work together the better we will become. Please do your best and let me know of your intention to attend. Coaching CPD points can be recorded for this event. There is a Level 2 Coach Course being planned for the autumn. Priority will be given to those who are currently on the list and who are able to evidence an appropriate work log and an attempt to gain CPD points. We need a good working machine not just pretty certificates! There is also the possibility of another Level 1 Coach Course being run in the autumn/winter. Kay Hobbs of Supermarine Bowmen has arranged for Wales Archery to run a seminar on Recurve Equipment on 31 st May at Swindon. This is open to all archers. I have also booked Wales Archery to run a seminar on Compound Bow Equipment on Sunday 18 th October 2015. The venue has yet to be arranged.
