Sept. 14, 2017 Venue...Jeffrey Field Location...University Park, Pa. Listen...N/A Watch...Big Ten Network #8/6 PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS (4-2-0) NU S TOP STORYLINES, STREAKS & TRENDS SERIES HISTORY Penn State leads the all-time series with Northwestern, 23-3-0. The Wildcats have not yet won a contest in University Park, dropping all 12 matches on the road. The teams did not play last season after 22 straight years of being on each other s schedule. Northwestern ended the Nittany Lions 19-match winning streak in the series in the 2014 Big Ten Tournament, when the Cats upset No. 6 PSU, 1-0, in the quarterfinals. Penn State has since won the last three contests, including two of them in University Park. SET PIECE SPECIALIST Junior defender Kayla Sharples scored her second goal of the season on Sept. 3 against Cincinnati on a set piece from the left of the box. The goal was Sharples fifth of her career, all as a defender. Each of her goals have come since the start of 2016, and she has been the Wildcats third top goal scorer in that time span. ASSISTING OTHERS Marisa Viggiano recorded her first assist of the season and the eighth assist of her career on Sept. 3 against Cincinnati. She has the most career assists out of any active Wildcat with eight. Viggiano has 14 career points, including two penalty kick goals, the third-highest total on the current roster behind Brenna Lovera (17) and Kassidy Gorman (15). SAVED BY CLEM Senior All-American goalkeeper Lauren Clem made a season high seven saves against Pepperdine on Sunday to bring her season total to 29. Clem ranks third in the Big Ten with 4.1 saves per game in 2017. Clem has made 281 saves in her career, tied for the second-highest total in program history with Wendy Ekeberg (2007-10). She trails only Wendy Scholz (1994-97) with 577 and with her next save will stand alone in second place. YOUTH MOVEMENT Northwestern s first year class has already proven itself in the first month of college play. Madi Kennel scored the first two goals of her career in a 3-0 win at Illinois State, with her first career goal - and the gamewinner - coming in the 54th minute. She tacked on another one in the 78th minute. Fellow rookie McKenna Angotti followed with her first career goal in the 84th minute. The Wildcats started four first years on Sept. 7 against Missouri, with Kennel, Angotti, and Regan Steigleder joined by Mikayla Hampton, who scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of that match. All seven newcomers have played overall with all of them taking at least three shots through the first seven matches. LOVERA IS BACK Junior forward Brenna Lovera has returned to lead the line in 2017 after a season-ending injury cut her 2016 year short. In just 10 matches last season, Lovera scored six goals, tied for the team lead, including four gamewinners. She scored the game-tying goal in the 86th minute at Loyola Marymount for her first goal since returning to action. SUFFOCATING DEFENSE The Wildcat defense was impenetrable in 2016, posting a school-record -- and NCAA leading -- 17 shutouts in 23 matches. Northwestern conceded just seven goals all season, a 0.29 goalsagainst average, a mark that was also tops in the entire country. Northwestern returns its entire defensive unit from that historic season, including All-Big Ten players Hannah Davison, Kassidy Gorman, and Kayla Sharples to go along with Nikia Smith and All-American goalkeeper Lauren Clem.

LED BY THE GOALIE... Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem is, quite simply, one of the best goalies in the entire country. Clem earned Third Team All-America honors last season after leading the country in shutouts (17), goals against average (.290) and save percentage (.927). She has 39 career shutouts to her name and is the reigning Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year....WITH AN IMPENETRABLE BACK LINE Clem s number have been aided in large part by a stifling Northwestern back line. Led by Preseason All-Big Ten student-athletes Kayla Sharples and Hannah Davison, Northwestern has only allowed 15 goals in the past two seasons. CAN T SCORE ON CLEM Senior Lauren Clem holds the Northwestern program record for career shutouts with 39. She is tied for 15th in NCAA history and continues to climb the ranks, now 16 away from tying the all-time NCAA record of 55, set by Katelyn Rowland (UCLA) from 2011-14. MOYNIHAN S MAGIC Head coach Michael Moynihan, now in his sixth season, has completely turned around the Wildcat program since arriving from Milwaukee for the 2012 season. Northwestern has won 52 matches since Moynihan s arrival and claimed the 2016 Big Ten championship after going 2-16-1 the year before he arrived. NU s season win total has increased in every year since 2013, culminating in last year s NCAA Round of 16 appearance. MAC HERMANN WATCH LIST Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List on Aug. 8. The award is given annually to the best men s and best women s player in the country. Clem is one of 30 women to be named to the watch list. PRESEASON ACCOLADES Northwestern was picked second in the annual Big Ten Coaches Preseason Poll, released Aug. 14. The Wildcats came in just behind preseason favorite Penn State, who they will play in front of a national TV audience in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 14 on BTN. Rutgers, Michigan, and Minnesota round out the top-five preseason selections. Goalkeeper Lauren Clem and defenders Hannah Davison and Kayla Sharples were named to the Big Ten Preseason Honors List, also voted on by the conference coaches. BIG TEN CHAMPS Northwestern won its first-ever Big Ten regular season championship in 2016, following a 1-0 overtime win in the regular season finale against Illinois. The Wildcats split the conference crown with Minnesota and Penn State with a 7-1-3 Big Ten record and a 16-3-4 mark overall. IN THE RECORD BOOKS The 2016 Wildcats finished the season with a 16-3-4 record, tying the 1998 Northwestern team for most wins in a single season. The Cats.783 winning percentage was the best singleseason mark in program history. Last year s team also matched the 1998 team with the best postseason run, advancing to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. The Cats finished the year ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, the second-highest finish ever by a Northwestern team (No. 14-1998).
