QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUBNEWSLETTER Issue37 1 Out of the Rough September 2017 Presidents Message From Adrian Coles Hello fellow members, I was extremely honoured to be asked to fill the position as President of our great club. I have been associated with the club over a few periods since the mid- 80 s and since returning in May 2016 have really enjoyed the spirit and camaraderie that is synonymous with Queanbeyan Golf Club. Although the road ahead for the club will still present some challenges at times, we are certainly in a better place thanks to the commitment and dedication of Wal Harrison. His legacy is one that will never be forgotten and should be a source of inspiration for this and future boards in shaping the prosperous future of our club. In the coming months, the board will be focussed on finalising the 2016-17 financial accounts with the club s auditor, finalising the financial forecasts for the coming year and preparing action plans for growth across the business areas (clubhouse, golf, course, membership etc.). With the onset of Spring and warmer weather the hard work and dedication of our course team should become evident and inspire some great golf results. I also hope that the warmer weather engenders a thirst for at least one drink per member after each round. For support inside the club is one small way that we can all assist towards improving the future prospects for our club and provide the important cashflow to fund improvements across all areas. I look forward to meeting more and more members over time and along with the other board members will be interested to hear any constructive ideas for the betterment of our club. Happy Spring golfing.adrian What s in this Edition? Junior Clinic

QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUBNEWSLETTER Issue37 2 TIP FROM THE TOUR The Captain s Desk From Match Committee Match Committee HOOPS, ROPES AND SIGNS CHIPPING A common fault we see with most golfers is poor contact on chips shots. "Scooping" generally causes both thin and heavy shots because of the clubs angle of attack. When you see a good player chip, there is next to no wrist break in the impact zone, meaning they are generally making a very slight downward stroke on the back of the ball. A good though to have while chipping is to keep the club low after the strike, this will let your arms keep travelling, instead of trying scoop or lift the ball with your wrists. If this is a problem you're having with your game, call us to book in for an individual lesson!!!! If your game needs a tune up, see Matt or Jake in the pro shop. Local Rule for Winter Conditions continues but will be reviewed at September Match Committee meeting next week NSW 4BBB for Men At Fairbairn on Sunday 6 August Dave Cunningham and Larry Britten recorded the best result from entries of the area. Dave and Larry will be off to Bonville in October to try to be the best in the state. Holden Scrambles September is the month for scrambles. Thursday 7 September was for Women and on Sunday 24 September the Medley Scramble. Contact Jake for details for 24 September. Club Championships The 2017 Championships will be held from Saturday 7 October and final day will be Sunday 15 October. A reminder that we have added a fourth division for longer handicap players and this division will play Stableford. If times are available single day entries will be most welcome and entry forms will be available soon. The Social Committee is planning a special function on Saturday 7 October - details will be available soon. Reminders for November Queanbeyan Cup Saturday 18 November and Mixed Foursomes Saturday 25 November. Club Presentation evening will be 25 November. If you see hoops or ropes down it would be appreciated if you could take the time to put them back to protect these areas. It would be great if and when you need to move a rope, hoop or sign that you replace it to its original position. The Greens staff place these hoops, ropes and signs periodically around the course to protect new work and regenerate worn areas. Bar Attendant (Casual) The club is looking for Casual Bar Staff. Customer Service Skills Coffee making skills. Current NSW RSA Certificate. Call David Doyle on 6297 1669 for more information.

It s been a very tough few weeks for me personally with the passing of our wonderful President Wal Harrison. I have only known Wal for the past 18 months but it feels like I ve known him for years and years. He was to me simply the best person I have ever worked with in all my years in hospitality. He had a very rare trait in that he could be quick and to the point while also being diplomatic to ensure he did not cause offence. He was a great thinker and he was very good at steering people to his way of thinking but was always open to hear the opinions of others. He loved this club and worked tirelessly until the end. He was a great help to me and I will miss him very much. One of the things Wal and the Board did in the past few weeks was to ensure succession was in place. Because of that we welcome 3 new Board members; our new President Adrian Coles and two new Board members John Bull and Jon Ellwood. I know they are very keen to make a difference and I look forward to working with them to continue to strengthen the club. I would also like to thank Leigh Blyton for all his help to me and hard work for the club over the years. As always, I encourage all members to check out our sponsors and if they are in the market to use their products or services to please give them the opportunity to quote. Please Like the Club s Facebook page, we are going to be running some great competitions and giveaways to all our Friends. When you next go to our website click on the Facebook link on the top right of the Homepage. Good golfing and I will see you in our club and when it warms up, on the course. QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUBNEWSLETTER Issue37 8 Women s News From Captain Deb The Women Members of the Queanbeyan Golf Club join with the Club, in sending our condolences to the Harrison family on the passing of our Club President Wal Harrison. Wal was not only heavily involved in the Golf Club but had made a significant contribution to the Queanbeyan Community over the years. August was a busy Month with many Open Days and other competitions that our Ladies participated in and represented the Club with pride. Firstly, congratulations to our Monthly Medal Winners, Gail Goiser and Sylvia Spring (two out of two thus far). During the Course Renovations 21-23 Aug 17, it was not possible to play our normal Tuesday Comp. A big thank you to Capital Golf Club who invited us to play in their Tuesday Comp. With Twenty of our players boosting their field, we did take most of the prizes that day. Capital Ladies will be invited to join our competition when their course undergoes scheduled renovation. Thursday, 24 Aug saw three teams from Queanbeyan: Sam McLintock & Sylvia Spring, Fran Miller & Karen Ebsworth, Sue Korth & Leanne Griffith compete in the Regional Finals of the Golf NSW 4BBB vs PAR competition held at Belconnen. Unfortunately, none of our teams could beat the winning score of +7. The Yass Open was held on 30 Aug. Adding to her two other Open Titles for this year, Pauline Jeffery held on to win the Yass Open Title. Unfortunately, none of our ladies who played on the day thought to take a photo (disappointed.) The Women s Holden Scramble season within the CSGA region started off with the first match at Yowani on 31 Aug. Congratulations to (from left) Collen Langi, Sue Korth, Sue Campbell and Sue O Grady from QBN winning the day and moving onto the Regional Finals early next year. QBN will hold our Holden Scramble on Thu, 7 Sep. Good luck to all teams entered, hopefully we can get another QBN team qualified. Sponsorship Opportunity Thanks to 360 Degree and the SleepDoctor for sponsoring the 1 st and 8 th tee signs. If your company or you know of a company that would like to sponsor one or several of the tee signs please contact David Doyle on 6297 1669 or ceo@queabeyangolf.com.au
