The two teams first met in 1974 and the Buckeyes have won two of the last three contests. OSU dropped a 3-1 decision when the pair faced off in Champaign last season. Over the past 42 years, the Buckeyes and Wildcats have battled on the court 75 times. Ohio State has won 55 of the outings, including the last five matches. During the home-and-home series a season ago, OSU swept Northwestern at St. John Arena before handing the Wildcats a 3-1 loss in Evanston. BUCKEYES IN THE B1G Hannah Gruensfelder bumped her average to 4.72 digs per set, which is good for second in the league. Taylor Hughes is also representing the Buckeyes with 10.23 assists per set (11th) while Lauren Witte averages 1.02 blocks per set (14th) and has a.356 hitting percentage (13th). As a team, Ohio State stands fourth in digs per set (15.10). CAREER WATCH: TAYLOR HUGHES Junior setter Taylor Hughes currently ranks eighth in program history with 2,865 assists. Her 43 helpers at Michigan (Sept. 29) got her ahead of Amanda Peterson ( 09-12), who has 2,755 assists. CARLSTON APPROACHING 400 WINS Head coach Geoff Carlston has been in charge of three programs during his 18-year career, having spent the last 10 seasons at the helm for Ohio State. Carlston s amassed 2017 BIG TEN STANDINGS 396 career wins and is on track to check off No. 400 this season. As of Oct. 9 UPSET ALERT: DOWN GOES PURDUE The Scarlet and Gray handed Purdue its first home loss of the season with a 3-1 triumph on Sept. 23. It was the first time the Buckeyes defeated the Boilermakers in Holloway Gymnasium since 2012. BANNER DROP Ohio State dropped the 2016 All-American banner for Taylor Hughes prior to its match on Oct. 6. Hughes joined 18 other Buckeyes who have been honored to grace St. John Arena with a banner. Big Ten Overall TEAM W-L Pct. W-L Pct. SCHIRMER & SMEATHERS SHINE AT PURDUE Luisa Schirmer and Madison Smeathers combined for 41 kills when the Buckeyes bested Purdue in four sets. Schirmer was on fire with a career-high 25 kills, hitting.385 (25-5-52) on the evening. Smeathers came through with a career-best 16 kills on 31 attempts and three errors for a.419 clip. TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF Ohio State s 3-0 triumph over Maryland on Sept. 20 was the first time the team opened Big Ten play with a win since the 2013 season. The Buckeyes took down Michigan in four sets on Sept. 27, 2013. SWAN SPREADS HER WINGS It was a big weekend for rookie Ayanna Swan as Ohio State wrapped up its non-conference slate hosting the Buckeye Invitational. Swan started off her impressive night by earning her first career start versus NIU. She didn t let the opportunity go to waste as she connected on a career-high 19 kills. Through the tournament s three matches, Swan averaged a team-best 3.90 kills per set. GRUENSFELDER: ONE RECORD AT A TIME It took only three weeks into her collegiate career for freshman Hannah Gruensfelder to set an all-time Ohio State school record and a subsequent Big Ten Freshman of the Week distinction following her 38-dig performance Sept. 10 at Notre Dame. Gruensfelder s astonishing 38 digs versus the Irish are the most ever by a Buckeye in a four-set contest. Gruensfelder s digging explosion surpassed the previous four-set mark of 35 digs by Valeria Leon versus Arizona in 2015 and is the second-highest total overall (Julie Chellevold dug 41 balls in a five-set match back in 1990). Ohio State s 109 team digs total versus Notre Dame also cracked the Top-20 in school history. Gruensfelder was responsible for 7.43 digs per set and successfully handled 32 errorfree service receptions. NATIONAL TELEVISION EXPOSURE Friday s match vs. Illinois is one of five Buckeye matches televised on national television this season. Ohio State will be featured on ESPNU when Michigan comes to St. John Arena on Oct. 22. Ayanna Swan and Luisa Schirmer were both named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. CARLSTON REMAINS PERFECT When the Buckeyes hosted NIU and Dayton during the Buckeye Invitational, head coach Geoff Carlston had never lost a match to either time while at the helm. He kept his spotless record with 3-1 win over the Huskies, moving to 10-0 all-time for his career. The Buckeyes swept the Flyers to put Carlston at 3-0. BUCKEYE NATION SUPPORTS HURRICANE RELIEF FUND After the Coastal Carolina Classic (scheduled for Sept. 8-9) was cancelled because of issues associated with Hurricane Irma, an impromptu home-and-home weekend series between Ohio State and Notre Dame was born. In lieu of charging admission to the match at St. John Arena on Sept. 8, OSU Athletics encouraged fans to donate to the Red Cross Hurricane. 2

HEAD COACH GEOFF The 2017 season marks Geoff Carlston s 10th as Ohio State s head coach. He took the reins of the women s volleyball program on Feb. 5, 2008 and is the fifth head coach of the Buckeyes in the 46-year history of the program. Carlston enters 17 with a career winning percentage of.708 in 14 years as a Division-I head coach, racking up 337 victories compared to just 139 defeats. His squads have averaged over 24 wins per season and he owns 12 years of 20 or more victories. Carlston started his head coaching career at Division-II Concordia University, St. Paul in Minnesota, where he accumulated 49 victories in three seasons. The native Minnesotan has made his mark in the state of Ohio, guiding the Bobcats of Ohio University and the Buckeyes to a combined 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. Carlston has directed Ohio State to the NCAA `Sweet 16 five times since 2010, one of just 11 schools in the country to accomplish that feat. The Buckeyes have rattled off three consecutive trips to the NCAA Regionals (only eight teams nationally have done so from 2014-16). Before arriving in Columbus, Carlston started his NCAA Tournament success with five straight Mid-American Conference championships to propel Ohio into the Big Dance, including his first Sweet 16 showing in 2005. Carlston s squads are a combined 9-3 all-time in the NCAA First Round and 7-0 at Ohio State. He led the Bobcats to a conference crown in each of his five campaigns in Athens. Carlston s pupils have often been recognized among the nation s elite, totaling 17 All-American accolades overall and at least one in each of the past six seasons. Taylor Hughes and Taylor Sandbothe both picked up All-America distinction in 2016, marking the third straight All-America campaign for Sandbothe. Elizabeth Campbell joined Sandbothe as repeat All-Americans in 2015, each earning recognition for the second year in a row. Sandbothe was voted to the First Team. For the first time in school history, three Buckeyes -- Campbell, Sandbothe and Taylor Sherwin - earned AVCA All-America honors (honorable mention) in 2014. Ohio State s Katie Dull (2009), Emily Danks (2011) and Kaitlyn Leary (2013) also earned All-America honorable mention while Mari Hole was chosen in back-to-back seasons as an 11 honorable mention and Third Team member in 2012. Five Bobcats picked up All-American status under the tutelage of Carlston. On the conference level, Carlston has molded 16 All-Big Ten, 25 All-MAC and eight All-NSIC performers since 2000. Academic success has followed Carlston throughout his career as well. Student-athletes receiving academic all-conference laurels has been a common occurrence under Carlston, racking up a total of 92 such awards: 57 Academic All-Big Ten, 25 Academic All-MAC, 10 Academic All-NSIC). His program was honored by the NCAA in May 2014 with the Public Recognition Award, given to teams scoring in the top-10 percent nationally in each sport based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR). Following a run to the Sweet 16 in 2014, Carlston s Buckeyes added Academic prowess to place themselves in rare company. Just three schools nationally could boast both advancement into the NCAA Sweet 16 and perfect multi-year APR scores of 1000 three or more times each between 2010-14. During the summer of 2011, Carlston served as head coach of one of the USA A-2 squads that played at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships Women s Open, finishing second. Carlston came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach at Ohio University, building a powerhouse in the Mid-American Conference. His squads reached the NCAA Tournament every season and won five straight conference crowns with an overall record of 144-22 during Carlston s time in Athens. The Bobcats won 78 of 80 MAC matches and went 14-1 in the conference tournament with four tourney titles. Four Bobcats were named MAC Player of the Year and a pair were tabbed MAC Freshman of the Year. He was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year. Prior to Ohio, Carlston posted a 49-42 record in three seasons at the helm of the Concordia University, St. Paul (Minn.) program. He took the Golden Bears from an 0-18 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference the season before his arrival to a serious run at the league title in 2002. CUSP finished the 2002 campaign with a 24-9 record - its best in Division II competition - and earned its first national ranking during the season. Carlson recruited three consecutive NSIC Freshman of the Year selections to play for the Golden Bears. In the summer of 2002, Carlston served as coach of a Division II all-star team that played in a tournament in Holland. Competing against the top Dutch college and professional league teams, the group won gold and bronze medals. Before Concordia, Carlston served two seasons as a student assistant coach at Minnesota while completing a master s degree in social work. Carlston began his coaching career in 1994 as head coach at Hopkins High School. In his two-year tenure, his teams went 41-17 and captured the Classic Lake Conference title both seasons. He left the high school ranks for two years of service in Belize as a Peace Corps volunteer but stayed close to the sport, serving as head coach of the Belize women s national team and as an assistant for the men s national team. He helped develop a year-round training program and the team finished fourth at the 1997 Central America championship, earning the country s first international victories. Upon his return to the United States, Carlston became head coach of the 17 s team of the Minnesota One Junior Olympics club, which competed in the 17 Open Division at USA Nationals three consecutive years under his direction. In June 1993, Carlston earned his undergraduate degree in speech communication from the University of Minnesota, where he played on the club team for the Gophers. The Plymouth, Minn., native is married to the former Sara Tibesar of St. Paul. The couple has three children and resides in Columbus. 21

SUSAN HALVERSON ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH COACHING STAFF BEN SPURLOCK ASSISTANT COACH Susan Halverson-Maloney returned to life as a Buckeye in August 2015, signing on as an assistant coach. She was then promoted to associate head coach in the summer of 2017 after backto-back trips to the NCAA Regional Semifinals. Halverson-Maloney had logged five previous seasons at Ohio State before becoming a full-time staff member, serving as the program s volunteer coach in 2012 and competing as a defensive specialist from 2007-10. She was selected to the 2016 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Thirty Under 30 list. Halverson-Maloney was the lone Big Ten coach chosen and one of just 12 Division-I honorees nationally. The AVCA Thirty Under 30 award was created to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport. Halverson-Maloney has pushed the Buckeyes to the NCAA Sweet 16 in each of her two seasons as an assistant coach in 2015-16, five years after doing so as a team captain on the 2010 OSU squad. Valeria León shattered the all-time Ohio State career digs record in 2016 under the tutelage of Halverson-Maloney, a former Buckeye defensive specialist herself. Halverson-Maloney s previous two seasons were spent patrolling the sidelines at the University of North Texas as an assistant coach. She and the Mean Green racked up 22 wins in 2014 on the strength of Conference USA Player of the Year, Carnae Dillard. While living in the Lone Star State, Halverson-Maloney also continued her work with USA Volleyball as the Technical Coordinator for the North Point Volleyball Club located in the USA Volleyball North Texas Region. During her prior stint in Columbus, Halverson-Maloney was the System Coordinator (2011-13) for the Elite Volleyball Training Center in the USA Volleyball Ohio Valley Region. Ben Spurlock, a former Buckeye studentathlete and Ohio native, returned to Columbus as an assistant coach for the Ohio State women s volleyball program in July 2017. Spurlock had been coaching at the collegiate level for eight years after concluding his playing career in 2009. Spurlock spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach for Saint Louis University. He led the Billiken recruiting efforts, signing two state s Gatorade Player of the Year nominees and the 2013 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. Spurlock was also responsible for on-court training of defenders and blockers, opponent scouting and directing the programs day-to-day operations. During the 2016 campaign, he guided SLU to an 18-win season with a conference record of 11-3, concluding with a second straight trip to the A-10 Tourney Finals. Prior to Saint Louis, Spurlock was an assistant coach at Northwood University in Midland, Mich., for two years.
