INDIANA MEN S GOLF The GADO North Texas Classic - Feb. 18-19, 2007-2 INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM Indiana University sophomores Seth Brandon and Jorge Campillo were invited to participate in the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational on Feb. 2-4, at the Frederica Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga. The Jones Cup Invitational, a 54-hole stroke play event, is contested biennially among the best amateur players from around the world. First contested in 2001, the Jones Cup Committee extended invitations to 99 players for the 2007 competition based on a variety of criteria, such as tournament finishes and amateur rankings. Campillo finished in a tie for 62nd-place at the event with a three-day total of 226 (70-81-75) while Brandon was one stroke behind him, wrapping up the event in a tie for 69th at 227 (76-76-75). NEW YEAR, NEW EVENTS Four members of the IU men s golf team participated in three events during the early winter months. During the semester break, sophomores Seth Brandon and Brandon Pike headed south for the Dixie Amateur Championship, held at the Palm-Aire Country Club in Pompano Beach, Fla. Each playing in their first Dixie Amateur, both failed to make the cut at the 76th playing of the annual event, which took place, Jan. 2-3. Brandon turned in a 36-hole total of 150 to miss the cut by three strokes. The Dalton, Ga., native carded a 6-over-par 77 in the first round on the Cypress Course, but came back and fired a 2-over 73 on the Oaks Course in the second round to just miss advancing to the final two rounds. Also starting on the Cypress Course, Pike wrapped up the event with a two-round total of 158. He carded a 7-over par 78 in the first round and then carded an 80 on Jan. 3 for his total. Not to be outdone, freshman Alex Martin also headed to Florida for the break, participating in the New Year s Invitational at the St. Petersburg Country Club. He finished with a 4-over-par total of 292 (70-77-69-76) at the 81st New Year's Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 7. Martin closed out the tournament in 23rd place with his total. A native of Middletown, Ohio, Martin wrapped up the 72-hole event 19 strokes behind the winner, Major Manning, at 273 (69-66-66-72). He was three strokes out of a top-20 placement and also fired a career-low 69 in the third round. SUCCESS AWAY FROM THE COURSE A hallmark of Mayer s tenure at the helm of the IU men s golf program has been the academic success that the team has had. That success has continued in the 2006-07 season, as two members of the team have already been named IU Scholar-Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Oct. 8, 2006, senior Tad Sacheck earned the honor, while sophomore Drew Allenspach was the honoree for the week ending Jan. 28, 2007. EASTERN FINISH The Indiana men's golf team finished in sixth place at The Landfall Tradition, held at the Jack Nicklaus Course at Landfall Country Club in Wilmington, N.C., Oct. 27-29. The Hoosiers wrapped up the tournament a team total of 914 (306-300-308) for their placement. It was IU's final tournament of the fall portion of its schedule. Leading the way for Indiana were sophomore Jorge Campillo and junior Santiago Quirarte. The duo tied for ninth place with a total of 224 for the tournament, with Campillo turning in rounds of 79-75-70 for his placement and Quirarte carding rounds of 77-73-74 to wrap up the fall. It was the sixth top-10 for Campillo in six appearances so far this season and was also the best finish for Quirarte in the fall. Following those two players was freshman Alex Martin, who finished in a tie for 35th place with a total of 234 (76-75-83). Sophomore Drew Allenspach wrapped up the fall in a tie for 38th with a tournament total of 236 (75-77-84) while classmate Seth Brandon wrapped up a tie for the 43rd position after carding a total of 237 (78-78-81). GO WEST YOUNG MAN The Indiana men's golf team finished 10th at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge. The Hoosiers turned in rounds of 312-304-302 for a total of 918 for their placement. The tournament was held at Pacific Dunes Golf Course and was co-hosted by the University of Oregon and Northwestern University. Picking up his fifth top-10 finish in five events played to lead the Hoosiers was sophomore Jorge Campillo, who finished in a tie for fifth. The Caceres, Spain, native turned in a final round of 73 to go along with a 75 and 76 from the first day for a 54-hole total of 224 and his placement. Fellow sophomore Seth Brandon finished in a tie for 18th position after carding a 226 (78-79-69) for the tournament. He carded a 218 (69-73-76) for the tournament. Classmate Drew Allenspach finished in 19th position after turning in a 54-hole total of 228 (75-74-79) and fellow sophomore Seth Brandon shared 31st place with a total of 232 (75-78-79) for the tournament. INDIANA MEN S GOLF The GADO North Texas Classic - Feb. 18-19, 2007-3 Jorge Campillo, who tied for third with a 10- under-par total of 206 (68-70-68). It was the lowest 54-hole total of his career and marked the first time in the Caceres, Spain, native's collegiate career in which he carded three rounds under par. In tying for third, Campillo collected his third top-10 of the season in three tournaments and the eighth of his career. Also finishing under par was sophomore Seth Brandon, who tied for 12th with a two-under 214 (72-73-69). It was the lowest 54-hole total for the Dalton, Ga., native in his two years competing for the Cream and Crimson. The third Hoosier under par for the tournament was classmate Drew Allenspach, who carded a one-under total of 215 (74-72-69) at Mattaponi Springs. That total tied Allenspach's career low, which he set last season at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational. Rounding out the Hoosier lineup was junior Santiago Quirarte, who tied for 49th with a 54- hole total of 225 (70-74-81). Making his collegiate debut, Alex Martin tied for 51st after carding a 226 (77-73-76). THE NCAA CENTRAL REGIONAL PREVIEW Jorge Campillo picked up right where he finished last season, opening the 2006-07 campaign with a tie for third place at the Rich Harvest Farms/NCAA Central Regional Preview. Campillo carded a 224 (74-76-74) for his placement at the tournament. As a team, the Hoosiers finished in eighth place with a 54-hole total of 929 (305-318-306) for the tournament. Louisville captured the team title with a total of 895 (297-299-299). Seth Brandon shared 15th place for the Hoosiers, finishing with a three-round total of 229 (76-79-74). Brandon Pike finished in a tie for 30th position with a 235 total (78-80-77), while Santiago Quirarte shared 48th with a 240 (77-83- 80). Drew Allenspach finished in a tie for 58th position after carding a 245 (80-83-82) for the tournament. Competing as an individual, Aaron Harrell tied for 43rd with a 239 (80-81-78). HOOSIERS ON TOUR When IU alum Steve Wheatcroft earned his PGA Tour card on Dec. 4, 2006, it brought the total of former Hoosiers on Tour to three, something that many schools can not claim. Wheatcroft joined two-time All-American Jeff Overton and the 2004 PGA Champion, Shaun Micheel, as members of the PGA Tour in 2007. Most recently, Overton finished in a tie for 19th at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro- Am, Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 8-11. It was Overton's fifth top-25 finish of his career and his first start of the 2007 season. Wheatcroft was also in the field, but he missed the cut after firing rounds of 72-76-71. Wheatcroft has played in five events already in 2007, making just one cut. also the unanimous Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Campillo became the first IU rookie since former standout Jeff Overton in 2002 to be selected to the All-Big Ten team. Those honors wrapped up a season in which the newcomer had been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week three times. Not to be outdone, head coach Mike Mayer was named both Big Ten and Midwest Region Coach of the Year. It was his first time earning either honor and the first Big Ten recognition for a Hoosier coach since Sam Carmichael collected the accolade in 1998. RECORD SETTING Campillo cemented his place in the Indiana record book by shattering the all-time freshman scoring record with a mark of 72.67 in 39 rounds in 2005-06. That average was also good for eighth place in IU lore. Campillo also moved into a tie for the fifth-best single round score in Hoosier history with his 67 in the final round of the NCAA Eastern Regional. If not for Campillo, Allenspach would have snagged the honor for himself. Allenspach wrapped up the year with a stroke average of 74.15, second on the all-time freshman list, and he narrowly beat out Brandon for that spot. Brandon wrapped up the season with an average of 74.33 in 39 rounds. He also posted the best score of any Hoosier on the season and his 66 in the first round of the Big Ten Championships tied for the fourth best in program history. ENTERING THE WINNER S CIRCLE On April 9, Campillo wrapped up the title at the Boilermaker Invitational by eight strokes for his first individual title, becoming the first true freshman to win an event since current IU assistant coach Josh Brewer was victorious in 1995 at the Legends Intercollegiate. It was also the first time that a Hoosier had won a tournament since Overton in 2005. The following weekend, fellow newcomer Brandon shared medalist honors at the Kepler Intercollegiate. It went down as a share of first place for the Dalton, Ga., native after he dropped the second playoff hole, and he joins Campillo and Brewer as the only true freshmen to claim first place in the program s history. PICKING UP SOME HARDWARE Campillo wrapped up his first season by earning a spot on the PING All-Midwest Region team as well as All-Big Ten honors and he was

INDIANA MEN S GOLF The GADO North Texas Classic - Feb. 18-19, 2007-9 Mike Mayer is in his ninth season at the helm of the Indiana men s golf program. His focus has been to rekindle the fire that brought the Indiana men s golf team a Big Ten Championship in 1998, and he has accomplished just that. Mayer led the Hoosiers to their third consecutive NCAA Regional appearance during the 2005-06 season, marking the first time IU collected three consecutive postseason berths since advancing to six straight from 1972-77. Indiana also captured two team titles throughout the season, which culminated in Mayer being named both Big Ten and Midwest Region Coach of the Year. In addition to Mayer s honors, Jorge Campillo shattered former Hoosier and current PGA Tour member Jeff Overton s freshman scoring average, ending the season with a 72.67 average, the eighth-best in school history. Campillo was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Year by a unanimous vote and became the first IU rookie since Overton in 2002 to be selected to the All- Big Ten team. The Caceres, Spain, native also earned a spot on the PING All-Midwest Region team following the season. In addition to those honors, Campillo captured the Boilermaker Invitational for his first individual title, becoming the first true freshman to win an event since current IU assistant coach Josh Brewer was victorious in 1995. He was also named Big Ten Golfer of the Week three times throughout the season. During the 2004-05 campaign, Mayer led the Hoosiers back into the NCAAs for the second straight year, the first time since the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons IU had made consecutive appearances in the postseason. Indiana also corralled its best finish at the Big Ten Championships since 1998, finishing in second place, five shots behind Michigan State. Mayer also directed the career of one of the most accomplished golfers to ever step foot on the IU campus. Overton completed his four years in Bloomington leaving his personal stamp on the program. Overton earned second team All-America accolades in 2004 and 2005. He is the only Hoosier golfer to ever card a single-season scoring average under 70 with 69.97 in 2004-05, and his career average of 71.72 bested Randy Leen s 73.49 mark for the top spot in school history. Indiana s success came on the heels of one one of the greatest seasons in the program s history in 2003-04. For the first time since the 1996-97 season and the first time in his tenure, Mayer led the Hoosiers into the NCAA Tournament. IU finished tied for 20th at the Central Regional, and Overton became the first Hoosier since Leen (1998) to advance to the NCAA Championship. In addition to returning to the NCAAs, Mayer led Indiana to four team titles, the second-most in school history and the most in a single season since 1974-75. Mayer also coached Indiana s first All-American since Leen (1998) in Overton. Along with Overton, Mayer helped develop Heath Peters into one of the top golfers in the conference. Peters narrowly missed advancing to the NCAA Championships, tying for 30th at the NCAA Regionals. Peters finished the year earning a spot on the All- Midwest Region team and was a second team All-Big Ten member. The success derived by Mayer is even more rewarding given Mayer s familiarity with IU. He is an alumnus of the university and spent nine seasons as an assistant coach under Sam Carmichael before taking over the men s program in the fall of 1998. During those nine seasons as an assistant coach, Mayer was a part of two Big Ten Championships and a trip to the NCAA Championships. In his first year as head coach, Mayer had the pressure of repeating what the team had accomplished in 1998, winning a Big Ten Championship. Though the Hoosiers did not repeat, he helped set the foundation for what is once again one of the top programs in the conference. In that first season, Mayer had his first All-Big Ten recipient, as Brent Landry was named to the all-conference squad. With Steve Wheatcroft accomplishing the feat in 2000 and 2001, Overton in 2002 and 2003, Overton and Peters in 2004, Overton in 2005 and Campillo in 2006, Mayer has coached at least one Hoosier golfer to All-Big Ten honors in each of his eight full seasons. Individual accolades have not only come for Mayer s golfers on the course, but also in the classroom. During his tenure, Indiana golfers have earned 39 Academic All-Big Ten honors, including a programrecord eight in both 2004 and 2005. Additionally, Ryan Cassidy was named an All- America Scholar in 2004, while Brad Marek and Scott Seibert collected All-America Scholar honors in 2005. Mayer has brought the Hoosiers into the Big Ten spotlight as the conference has emerged as one of the best in the nation. A big asset in Mayer returning the program to prominence has been his strong recruiting classes. Over the last five seasons, Mayer s newcomers have produced the first-, second-, third-, fifth-, and sixth-lowest freshman scoring stroke averages in school history. Mayer s recruits also have set new season and career stroke averages. Overton owns the top two and the fifth-lowest single-season scoring averages in school history, while Peters claims the 10th-lowest single-season stroke average. In addition, Overton closed his career with the lowest career stroke average in the program s history, while Peters staked the third-lowest career average. Mayer s recruiting efforts paid off, as the 2005-06 freshmen class finished the year with a 73.89 stroke average and ranked second in Golfstat s Freshman Class Impact Ranking. The recruiting success for Mayer promises to continue as the Hoosiers enjoyed arguably their most impressive recruiting tool three seasons ago in the form of a state-of-the-art practice facility. The facility features bent grass tees, fairways, bunkers and many large greens, which are a product of Mayer s hard work and dedication to success. Before Mayer embarked upon his coaching career, he worked as the sports editor for the North Vernon HEAD COACH MIKE MAYER NINTH SEASON Plain Dealer and Sun as well as a sports writer and columnist for the Bedford Times Mail. In addition to his sports writing credentials, Mayer also has held the position of Golf Course Manager and Superintendent at Muscatuck Country Club, located in North Vernon, Ind. Mayer, a 1975 graduate of Jennings County High School, obtained degrees in journalism and English literature from Indiana in 1987, and went on to receive his master s degree in sport management from IU in 1998. Mayer also serves as the Director of Golf at Indiana University in charge of the IU golf facility and is a Class A member of the Professional Golfers Association of America and a Class A PGA Professional. Born Michael Barry Mayer on Feb. 17, 1957, in Seymour, Ind., Mayer married the former Kimberly Collier on July 26, 2005. The couple resides in Unionville and have two children, Mayer s stepson, Zachary Collier, 14, and newborn son Ty. THE MAYER FILE PERSONAL Date of Birth Feb. 17, 1957 Birthplace Seymour, Ind.
