BOSTON RED SOX (66-44) VS. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (55-53) Friday, August 2, 2013 7:10 p.m. ET Fenway Park, Boston, MA LHP Jon Lester (10-6, 4.27) vs. RHP Randall Delgado (3-3, 2.85) Game #111 Home Game #58 TV: NESN/MLBN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WUFC 1510 AM (Spanish) WALK-OFF AGAIN: The Red Sox earned their 2nd straight walk-off win last night, an 8-7 victory over the Mariners on Daniel Nava s game-ending 9th-inning single to cap a 6-run 9th inning...it was the Sox MLB-best 11th walk-off win this season and the 1st walk-off RBI of Nava s career. The 11 walk-off wins are the Sox most in a season since 1978 (11)...Boston last had more walk-off wins in 1961 (12) and is 2 shy of the club record for walkoff wins in a season (13 in 1940), according to Elias. Nava, who led off the 9th inning with a walk and scored Brock Holt s double, was the 1st player with a walk-off RBI after scoring a run earlier that inning since TOR s Aaron Hill vs. TB in 2007 (Source: Elias). The Sox have walked off in back-to-back games for the 1st time since 8/2-3/11 vs. CLE (also a 5-4 walk-off win Tue. night on Stephen Drew s 15th-inning single). EPIC COMEBACK: Boston won last night after starting the 8th inning down 7-1 and entering the 9th inning down 7-2. Shane Victorino cut the defi cit to 5 runs with an 8thinning solo homer...then Boston sent 10 men to the plate and scored 6 times on 6 hits and 2 walks in the 9th inning while making just 1 out. According to Elias, last night was the 1st time since the start of the 2011 season that a winning team trailed by at least 5 runs entering the 9th inning. CLAWING BACK: Last night was just the Red Sox 4th ever 9-inning win in which they trailed by 5 or more runs heading into the 9th inning...they hadn t done it since the 2007 Mother s Day Miracle, in which they scored 6 in the 9th to win 6-5...The others came in 1931 vs. PHA and 1937 at CLE. It was just the 3rd time in Sox history the team came back to win after trailing by 6+ runs when entering the 8th inning...they hadn t done that since 7/3/40 vs. PHA, a game that ended on back-to-back homers by future Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx... The only other instance occurred on 5/13/1911 at DET. HOME STRETCH: The Red Sox tonight continue a 7-game homestand with the 1st of 3 games against the Diamondbacks...The Sox were edged out 2-1 in Monday night s makeup vs. the Rays and then swept Seattle in 3 games. ON THE RECORD: At 66-44 (.600) the Sox own the best record in the American League and 2nd-best in the majors behind only the Pirates (.602, 65-43). BEST MLB RECORDS IN 2013 TEAM W-L WPCT Pittsburgh 65-43.602 Boston 66-44.600 Tampa Bay 64-44.593 Boston s 66 wins are the most in the majors. IN THE STANDINGS: The Sox are in 1st place in the AL East for a 2nd straight day, 1.0 game ahead of the Rays. Boston has been in 1st place or T-1st for 102 days in 2013, the most among AL teams...since 2000, the only other season in which the Sox spent more than 100 days in 1st place was 2007 (173)..500 DAYS: The Sox are the only AL team and 1 of 2 ML clubs whose record has been above.500 all season long (also Atlanta)...The last Red Sox team to go this late into a season without falling to or under.500 was the 1946 club who spent the entire season above.500. HIGH WATER MARK: With last night s win, the Red Sox are a season-high 22 games over.500 for the 1st time since the end of play on 9/19/2011 (88-66)...They haven t been 23 games over.500 since finishing 9/17/11 at 87-64. RECENT RESULTS: The Sox have won 3 straight games and 5 of their last 6 contests...boston is 8-5 in 13 games since the All-Star break...they have won 12 of their last 19, 17 of their last 27, and 21 of their last 32 games. SERIES TALK: The sweep of the Mariners gave the Sox their MLB-best 22nd series win of 2013...The Red Sox have won all but 2 of their last 12 home series dating back to their set vs. the Indians from 5/23-26 (9-2-1). The Red Sox now have 7 sweeps this season, 1 shy of the AL lead behind Oakland and Tampa Bay (8 each). FRIENDLY FENWAY: The Red Sox are 5-4 in their last 9 home games...overall, they have won 14 of their last 19, 18 of their last 24, and 24 of their last 33 games at Fenway. The Red Sox.649 win percentage (37-20) at home ranks 3rd in the AL...The Sox 57 home games thus far in 2013 match 3 other teams for the most in MLB. The Sox lead MLB with a.463 SLG, 219 extra-base hits, and 147 doubles at home, and are 2nd with a.284 AVG and.349 OBP...Their 144 doubles at Fenway are 39 more than any other club at home (2nd, TOR at 108). SOX AND D-BACKS: Tonight the Sox open a 3-game Interleague series with the Diamondbacks at Fenway Park... Boston holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series against Arizona...Of the clubs 15 matchups through this season (including the current set), 12 will have been played in Boston. Boston swept their last series, a 3-game set at Fenway in 2010, and has won 5 straight against Arizona since 6/24/08, with each of those 5 at home...before that, the Sox lost their 1st 4 meetings with ARI at Fenway. NATIONAL SUCCESS: Boston is 2nd in the AL (3rd in MLB) with a 7-2 (.778) Interleague record this year...the Sox have won 16 of their last 20 games vs. the NL and have the best Interleague mark in baseball since 2003 (.651, 123-66). The Red Sox lead MLB with a.340 AVG and 5.8 runs per game this year in Interleague games. INTERLEAGUE INTRIGUE: Jacoby Ellsbury has hit safely in all 9 of Boston s Interleague games this year at a.487 AVG (19-for-39) and has a hit in each of his last 12 Interleague contests since 6/30/11 (.481 AVG, 25-for-52). Dustin Pedroia s career.339 AVG vs. the NL is the 2ndbest Interleague mark among actives (min. 300 PA)... Only BAL s Nick Markakis has a better mark (.348). START UP: Red Sox starters have held opponents to 3 earned runs or fewer in 22 of the club s last 28 games...the rotation s 3.83 ERA is 3rd-best among AL starters...sox starters 3.44 ERA at home is 2nd in the AL to Chicago (3.33). APPROACHING 40: Jacoby Ellsbury tops MLB with 39 stolen bases in 42 attempts (92.9%)...He is 1 stolen base shy of recording his 3rd 40-steal campaign (50 in 2008, club-record 70 in 2009)...He would join Tris Speaker (1912-14) as the only players to record 3, 40-steal seasons with the Red Sox. OFFENSIVE LINE: Sox batters tops the majors with 553 runs, 532 RBI (tied), 240 doubles, 379 extra-base hits, and 1,676 total bases, and are 2nd with a.273 AVG,.345 OBP, 1,044 hits, 25 triples (tied, 1st in AL), 394 walks, and 83 stolen bases (1st in the AL). FIRST WATCH: The Red Sox are 44-9 (.830) when scoring 1st this year, the highest such win percentage in the majors, and have won each of their last 3 such contests...they have only scored 1st twice in their last 12 contests. According to Elias, Boston is 19-1 (.950) when scoring 1st at Fenway Park in 2013 (only loss, 5/9 vs. MIN) but hasn t scored 1st in their last 9 home games. REHAB UPDATES: RHP Alex Wilson, on the 15-day DL with a right thumb sprain, continued a rehab assignment with Pawtucket last night vs. Norfolk (BAL) and threw a scoreless inning with 1 hit allowed...in 2 rehab outings he has allowed 3 hits, 1 run, and 1 walk with 1 strikeout. LHP Franklin Morales, on the 15-day DL with a left pectoralis strain, has 3 SO in 2.0 perfect innings over 2 rehab outings with Pawtucket...He is slated to pitch again with the PawSox Saturday and Sunday.
