Experienced Players Expecting Plenty of Friction During PBA World Series of Bowling Large field of players, lots of games mean bowling balls will hook at South Point Bowling Center LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Oct. 31, 2011) Experienced players who return to a specific baseball field, golf course or bowling center are always prepared to deal with the unique playing surfaces or scoring environment of the host facility. That conclusion applies to the field of Professional Bowlers Association and international players who are about to descend on South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas for the 2011 renewal of the PBA World Series of Bowling, which gets underway Friday. For bowlers who competed in the WSOB a year ago at South Point, the expectation is friction. In bowling context, that means lane surfaces combined with high-performance bowling balls will result in lots of hook. Even with a unique application of lane conditioner freshly applied to the lanes for every squad, every day, the heavy traffic of more than 200 bowlers bowling lots of games will result in more and more ball movement as each round progresses. Developing strategies for attacking the variety of lane conditioning patterns and the transition of oil as the day moves along are critical aspects of professional bowling. Every experienced player will arrive at South Point with an arsenal of bowling balls designed to react differently, depending upon the lane conditioning pattern, angle of attack and how much the various lane oil patterns will change as each round progresses. It s always a guessing game, but at the professional level, the bowler who makes the best educated decisions usually comes out ahead of the curve. While format changes for this year s World Series have been modified so that all events will be contested on freshlyoiled lanes, and fewer games per day are involved, the fundamental challenges from a year ago remain in place. What did returning players learn about South Point a year ago that is helping them prepare for 2011? The one thing I remember from last year is that South Point hooks, said 16-time PBA Tour title winner Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla. I have drilled some weaker balls to combat the friction. Page 4 BOWLING NEWS the continuing story by Steven Felege CHAPTER 6 The Release The importance of the release is obvious; it launches your shot down the lane. Not so obvious, but equally important, is what your release tells you. If the ball comes off your hand smoothly, it is saying that you performed the prior skills properly, that your wrist was well positioned, that your timing was good, and that you have made a good shot. If the release goes poorly, it is telling you that a mistake was made at some point in your delivery. This is the skill that gives your game that personal touch, literally. Muscle power is allowed here because it can be applied beneficially, without too much concern for inconsistency. That having been said, it s time to learn how to take your best shot! Technique 1. Initiate the release. Your arm is swinging forward. The instant it reaches vertical, relax your grip on the ball by removing the pressure your thumb is exerting on it. Concentrate on feeling the weight of the ball shift onto your fingers. 2. Apply lift. With the thumb now free of the ball, maintain the rigid posture of your wrist as much as possible. Focus on accelerating your hand along the target line, using the strength of your fingers to loft the ball out onto the lane (lift and loft are synonymous). Tip: Like the other skills, a consistent release happens in your mind first. The ball should not be allowed to simply pull itself free from your grip. Flip a coin like a referee at a football game. Notice that the thumb moves and the fingers don t. This action is identical to how a bowling ball is released! To ensure a consistent and reliable release, mentally picture yourself flipping a coin out onto the lanes. Tip: Wearing a wrist support is HIGHLY recommended. It will help prevent the wrist from flexing during the release. This keeps the fingers in the ball longer, allowing them to impart more rotation to the ball. It also allows you to feel what your wrist is doing during the armswing (when you see can t it). Finally, it is important to note that tremendous forces affect the wrist during the entire delivery. These devices provide the support necessary to greatly reduce the severity of repetitive motion injuries bowlers are prone to suffer. Tip: After the ball has left your hand, pose at the foul line until the ball has passed over its target! This ensures the consistency of your whole delivery. It also allows you to study the line the ball travels and look for changing lane conditions. If you can t maintain your balance, the indication is that you have delivered the ball too aggressively. You will be inconsistent, and unable to observe or adjust to changes in the lane conditions. WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING continued from page 1 will hopefully make me much more competitive this time around, said two-time PBA Tour winner Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, N.Y. I wasn t bowling well coming into the World Series last year and so far I feel a little better about my game than I did last year this time. South Point last year had a lot of friction, but every year the patterns are a little different and the field of players is different and normally better prepared as well, said Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., a four-time PBA Tour title winner who made two WSOB finals in 2010. Knowing that I had a lot of success last year in that building will help me. I also have been bowling all over the world to prepare myself for the WSOB and when I m home, I practice shooting a lot of spares and using different hand positions to be able to play every part of the lane. Unfortunately I didn t take notes last year, said 2010 PBA World Champion Tom Smallwood, Saginaw, Mich. Pair to pair they were pretty different, so Team Brunswick is getting there a few days early and we WILL be taking notes on every pair we bowl on. I plan on doing the same thing I did last year: grind out the tough pairs and hammer the pairs that give me a little something, said three-time PBA Tour winner Bill O Neill. I learned that after a few games, using a lot of angle through the front worked out pretty good. That has been a part of my game that has improved tremendously over the past couple of years. Hopefully for me that house tendency continues. I didn t really bowl very well last year, so hopefully I will make much better shots and make better decisions on how to play the lanes, said PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla. Last year I definitely learned the way the house wants to play the pattern and I will be using that knowledge to my advantage, said Scott Norton of Costa Mesa, Calif., who won his first title in the Chameleon Open on his way to winning PBA Rookie of the Year honors. But I fully expect everyone else to have learned as well. The fields continue to get stronger as people adapt and learn with each new experience, so it makes winning not only that much harder, but that much more rewarding when it happens. What I focus on are the things I can control and the knowledge that regardless of the format, bowling is the same everywhere: 10 pins up, my job is to knock them down, said two-time PBA Tour titlist Mike DeVaney of Murrieta, Calif. Simplify the game and your chances at success are vastly increased. What I learned at South Point last year is knowledge I plan to use to my advantage and not something that needs to be made public. I have no interest in sharing any information with the competition. Speed rules at the South Point, said PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke. Because of the extra friction in the front part of the lane, balls tend to slow down quicker than normal and it s the players who can get good movement on their shots while keeping their speed up that will do well because speed keeps the pins lively and the carry percentage is better. For a complete World Series schedule, visit pba.com. Discussion Like the line, volumes could be written about the release, but it is not the intention of this book to beat any subject to death. The Essentials of Bowling is about teaching you what you need to know to bowl like a champion. The faster that happens, the sooner you can get to the lanes and put these lessons to the test! Let s take a quick look at the elements that make up a consistent release so that you will understand how to perform and adjust the final skill. 1. Initiating the release: The release terminates the forward portion of the armswing. It happens in the blink of an eye, so you don t have the luxury of time to think about it, unless as instructed, you have been focused on this exact instant since the end of the back-swing. This point is actually predetermined for you. It occurs when your arm is straight up and down because that is when the ball is exerting its greatest force against your grip. Take advantage of the laws of physics by just going along with what nature is telling you to do anyway: let the ball roll off your thumb. When the thumb releases its pressure, you will feel the weight of the ball shift onto your fingers. This will happen both quickly and automatically. It is referred to as the explosion point because it is where you may apply your strength to explode out of the ball. 2. Loft the ball: If you choose to apply power, now is the time because only the muscles in your fingers will be involved and they aren t powerful enough to significantly alter the path of your shot. They are, however, extremely consistent! Employing them at this point provides your ball with additional rotation. This makes the ball hook more and produces a more effective mix of the pins when it strikes them. Tip: For the sake of your consistency, think all or nothing when deciding whether or not to apply power as you loft the ball onto the lane. Anything else promotes variations in the ball s path. While simply letting go of the ball may sound like the easiest thing in the world, it is not! It must be done with such precise consistency and relies on so many other conditions that it is actually quite a challenging skill to perfect. These conditions include: the fit of your equipment timing your grip the execution of the previous skills your wrist position All these physical elements must come together perfectly for a smooth release that produces a consistent and devastating shot. Practicing the skills as described and purchasing quality equipment help ensure that happens. However, there is one more element to consider in the development of your release. It is intangible but may be the most important part of your game. It is your confidence! This is the mental element that is the secret to ensuring that your release is successful over and over again! Lack of confidence is what makes you believe that you must steer the ball. It prevents you from trusting yourself and giving up control of the ball, hanging on to it beyond that explosion point! This leads to shots that are pulled off the target line, which leads to bad scores, which causes a lack of confidence, which leads to more poor shots, which leads to...well, you get the idea. It s a vicious cycle. Learning and practicing good technique breaks that cycle. It is much easier to unleash your shot when you know, without a doubt, that your stance, pushaway, and armswing have your ball on the target line. Understand that the techniques you have mastered will make the ball roll over its target again and again! Rest assured that it will hit the pins with more than enough power to make mincement of them. Once you do, you will actually look forward to the release because you will enjoy watching the show. That s what confidence is all about. Practice your skills, trust yourself, turn that ball loose with confidence, and enjoy the successes you will have earned. We returned to Lake Forest where we saw 216 entries come out to the classy center, and support the ABTA. We had a decent shot for the tournament making the cut scores of +46 for the men and +42 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (3 men and 1 female) were Bob Lomax (+36), Dan West (+35), and Kathy McCollom (-35). Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 43 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week. Our top qualifier for the Men was Matt Garcia with a +185, and for the women it was Faye Josafat with a +88. Each of them will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. The Match Series was worth $676. Matt drew a 378. We had no bowlers who had this score, so we will carry that over. At our next event we will estimate the Match Series at $1,100 at Covina Bowl. For the 3-6-9 Roll-off, the final bowler was Danny Guevarra who missed on his first shot and received a $50 consolation for Merlot Money:-)). In the semis, Andrew Lung led the field the first and second games but had a bad third game allowing Matt Fukuda to overtake him to be the top qualifer with a +84 and would sit out to bowl the title match. Coming in second was Jose Acosta with a +74 to sit out the first round. It took a +24 for the men and -11 for the women. Our top seed( Matt ) in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500 which is maxed out. Our top seed drew a 262. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had no bowlers who shot that score so it will be carried over. We will have $3,500 next week at Covina Bowl, and continue to build on the second and third backup pots. This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Roger Romero, Scott R. Johnson, Barbara Miller, Bobbie McCollum, Ryan Nam, Shaun Suase, and Tom Mazzulla, They received checks of $100 each. In the second round. The losers were Jose Acosta, Derrick Brown, Matt Garcia, and Kathy McCollom. They received checks of $110 each. This would get us down to the final five bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $34 (Tao Yang) to a high of $83 (Andrew Navarro) depending on who would win. In this round we saw Chris Kelly (9th seed) bowling Andrew Lung (4th seed). Chris bowled the best in this one in a 230-205 win. In this another good match, Tao would continue his hot bowling with a 253 to 220 over Andrew Navarro advancing to the semifinal match. Both Andrew s (Lung and Navarro) finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $120 each. They Bowled very well Now Chris Kelly and Tao Yang(who lets say loves to bowl at Forest Lanes) meet. Chris was looking to have a back to back week of being in the title match. He would win this match with a 240 to 205 and advance to the semi final. In the horses we would see Tao paying $34 and Chris paying $43 if they would win their match. This would be a match where we would see both bowlers continue their good bowling. Tao fell behind early with opens in the 2nd and 5th frames to put him down by 20 pins after the 5th frame. But then he seemed to find his shot and start striking. It was the 8th frame where he would pull into the lead by 4 pins. But the excitement was not over. Chris would leave the 4-6-7 in the 9th frame. He threw a hard shot and miraculoulsy picked it up from the back. Tao would finish with strikes in the 9th and 10th frame to take the match with a 213/271 to Chris at 201/245 and send Tao to the title match. He finished with a 169/227 to 112/158 and his 3rd ABTA title. He would take home $1,000 for 1st place and $1,700 for max.cash and Carry, $100 for wearing his ABTA shirt, and $100 for bowling with a Global 900 ball, for a total of $2,900. Finishing in 2nd place on a reduced entry for $ was Matt Fukuda. And in a special moment following the win, Tao got down on his knees and made a special night of it by proposing to Catherine Cheung. TICK...TICK... BOOM! by Frank Weiler MURRIETA JOE De- CAMPO, Jr. has been hot in October, at Cal Oaks Bowl. A ticking time bomb on the lanes. The last couple of Thursdays have seen him roll 788 and 773, with a high game of 289. On the Monday between his torrid Thursdays, he rolled a 729. That s averaging 254! When I heard about Joe and went to see him bowl, I was surprised to see a bowler with his own cheerleaders. When Joe would get up to bowl his cheerleaders (teammates) would chant TICK...TICK...TICK... TICK...BOOM! Then they chanted it again and again. Before long Joe s ball would hit the pins with a BOOM. What was this all about? I found that Joe was the most deliberate bowler I have seen since watching PATRICK AL- LEN on the PBA tour. Just like Allen, Joe Jr. takes a long time to set up. He stares down at his ball and hand position for at least ten seconds before starting his pushaway. Then Joe takes five very slow steps to the foul line. Subsequently, he rolls a very accurate ball straight to the pocket. He does it time after time. Perfect form, perfect timing, and perfect strikes again and again. His secret to outpacing the competition is DELIBERATION. I have never seen a bowler roll such a straight ball for such high scores. Joe releases his ball at the five board, rolls it in a trajectory over the second arrow in a perfectly straight line to the pocket. I found that you don t have to roll a big hook or apply a lot of revolutions to a bowling ball to score. When you re smooth as silk and as accurate as a chalk line, you will bowl high scores. ANITA MURTISHAW S 700 Leads Team To Title by Frank Weiler MURRIETA Anita Murtishaw used her Storm Victory Road to bowl 700 (226-230 - 244) recently to lead her FAST LANES PRO SHOP team to the first block title in Cal Oaks 640 Scratch league. It was position round for the first eight week block and Anita s team trailed the MISS DONUTS team by eight points. The Fast Lanes team needed a decisive win to move into first place. With Anita leading the way, they did it with a 20-4 point win. Anita had help from her teammates BRIENT KILL- INGS and husband JIM MUR- TISHAW. The guys averaged over 230 per game to contribute to the victory. The Miss Donuts team were at a disadvantage when SEAN KUCERA couldn t bowl. The team missed his 227 average. Also, team captain SENG TONG was injured and on crutches right up until bowling started. He contributed a heroic 600 on one good leg. Arvhin bowled in the 2PM squad and shot games of 203, 296 and 271 with handicap for a series total of 770 and the $500 1st place prize. Richard Valdez came in second shooting a 759 with handicap. Low to cash was +115. Our newest championship, Arvhin Garcia is a 23-year old student. Arvhin has only been bowling for about a year and does his league bowling at AMF Carter Lanes. BOWLING NEWS Page 11 Rancho Cucamonga Hello there and get ready for this week s double JAT Farm Club tournament update. First we step back in time to October 2nd and our third tournament of the season. This was held at Forest Lanes and we had twentyseven bowlers traveling deep down south. This tournament was also our first of three PBA Challenges of the season. The pattern put out for our bowlers (to my knowledge) was the Chameleon and it appears that this layout was a little difficult for the young bowlers. The tournament average for the entire field was a mere 157.7, meaning we ll have to work on that shot more often. JAT thanks the staff and management of Forest Lanes and I want to thank Executive Director David Yamauchi, and Dino Bidwell for taking care of the JAT Farm Club in my absence. But more so, a big thank you to the bowlers and supporters for going about business in their usual, wonderful manner. The qualifying round only produced three reportable scores, coming from Daniel Martinez 227, Baujee Harlan 225, and Chelsea Houston 222. The cut to advance into match play came in at minus 182, while Valerie Riggin led the field with at minus 38. In match play, things got a little better as either the pattern started spreading and/or the bowlers started to figure it out. Here we found Tyler Salverda making a nine position jump behind scores of 252-236-224. Very good. We also had a few more make this article with Bianca Taylor 243, Harlan 235, Riggin 224-226, and Michal Ma 222. The finals then started with 5th seed Martinez (-45) meeting the 4th seed Ashley Dunn (-38). Martinez took this close game 160-155 to advance to meet the 3rd seed Harlan (+64). Harlan knew that low scoring wasn t going to cut it, and proceeded to dismiss Martinez 214-167. Now Harlan met the 2nd seed Salverda (+80) and as he figured it would take high scoring from here on out. Harlan did just that with a 210, but Salverda topped that big time with the tournament high game of 256 and a chance at his first Farm Club title. But first he had to get pass the top seed Riggin (+103) in the best of three games. The first game was capture by Riggin 223-177 and Salverda even things up with a second game win 224-202. With things all even and one game to go, it looks like the two battled frame by frame. The ending score was a squeaker 204-201, going to Riggin for her second straight title. Congratulations Valerie. That brings us up to current date, where this past Sunday the group visited Brunswick Deer Creek Lanes. Here we had thirtythree bowlers and they had a lot to prove with the scoring and was eager to get back on to the lanes after the long layoff. A big thank you to Brunswick Deer Creek Lanes as the accommodations were wonderful. The qualifying round had some the following super scores posted by: Treven Goldsmith 278-257-221, Frank Aldrete 258-276, Tyler Salverda 244-257-222-228-247, Bert Dominick 257, and Chelsea Houston 252-242. Excellent bowling! But wait there s more: Jason Tilden 226-248, Terrence Robinson 244-225- 247, Zachary Smith 236-247, Jason Meister 245-229, Matthew Zweig 243, Matthew Green 243, Kyle Duster 238, Marguerite Evans 236, Ashley Dunn, 226, Karlie Loop 226, Bianca Taylor 223-220, and Evan Blevins 220. Salverda led the group after five games at plus 198 and 16th spot (last to advance in to the second round) came in at minus 41. Scoring like day and night between the last two tournaments. And in match play the high scoring kept on coming. Tilden posted up the tournament high game with a near perfect 279. We also had reportable scores from Robinson 259-257, Duster 248, Salverda 246-237-226, James Knapp 242-226, Dominick 234, Smith 234, Taylor 228-221, Goldsmith 226, Aldrete 226, Dunn 225, and Matt Miller 224. The big jump during match play was from Knapp with a seven position movement. Unfortunately, it just wasn t quite enough to get into the finals. Instead we found the 5th Taylor (+195) starting off the finals against the 4th seed Tilden (+212). Taylor set the tone of high scoring for the finals with a big 245-175 win. She now faced off with the 3rd seed Goldsmith (+331) and kept things going 206-187. However, now Taylor faced the 2nd seed Robinson (+353), who had been watching closely and knew what it would take to win. Taylor jumped out quickly, but Robinson came back and stayed steady. When it was all over Robinson had the victory 259-233, and the honor to bowl for the title. Now he was up Forest Lanes October 2nd, 2011 (l-r): Tyler Salverda 2nd; Valerie Riggin 1st; BJ Harlan 3rd. Brunswick Deer Creek Lanes Oct. 30th, 2011 (l-r): Terrence Robinson 2nd; Tyler Salverda 1st; Bianca Taylor 3rd against the top seed Salverda (+411) who had looked strong all tournament and show it with the first game win 247-205. Robinson fought back to show he had skills too and took the second game 237-210. The last and deciding game was a nail biter. Both bowlers were dead on through much of the match. Salverda though did have an open frame early and was on a 269 pace through seven, while Robinson was strike clean for as many frames. A spare for Robinson tighten things a bit to allow for experience (or lack of experience) to kick in. Robinson could only put together spares to try and hold his lead, hoping it would be enough. Salverda meanwhile close the gap some more when the first ball in the tenth frame yielded a 3-pin split. Regaining his composure (experience) Salverda picked up the needed split and buried the pocket on his last throw, for a 244-242 title victory. Congratulations Tyler on your first title. I want to mention that there was a number of condolences and consultation needed throughout the entire tournament. I m proud of the sportsmanship that was displayed by our bowlers and parents. For you bowlers, you have NOTH- ING to feel bad or ashamed about. You are all still young, learning, and bursting with talent. Our next tournament will be this coming Sunday (11/06) at Cal Bowl in Lakewood. This special tournament will be an Adult/Member (Adult/ Jr) Doubles tournament and we ll be running two divisions, Scratch (410 and over) and Handicap (409 and under). The cost is $40 per bowler ($80 p/team) and please remember to bring average verification (adults, please be honest) if you plan on being in the handicap division. Also for the adults, this is a junior event and although there is not a formal dress code, please keep it mature and bowling related. If there are any bowlers that do not yet have a partner, please contact the directors through our website (bowljat. org) in advance, and we ll put together an in need list and try to match up singles. A field of 14 bowlers took the lanes in the Open Division and scoring was very healthy. After 5 games of qualifying, Joshua Taylor led at +204 followed by the red-hot Wesley Low Jr. at +197 and Justin Sims at +166 on the strength of his perfect game in game 3. Low-to-qualify was Luke Holley at +60. The top-8 advanced to match-play to qualify for the top-4 stepladder where Wesley Low Jr. took the lead at +453 followed by Bobby Hornacek at +436, Joshua Taylor at +408 and low-toadvance Parker Brooks at +286 on the strength of a 265 game to double jump himself into the 4th place position. In the quarterfinal match, 4th seed Parker Brooks defeated 3rd seed Joshua Taylor 229-196 to advance to meet 2nd seed Bobby Hornacek. Hornacek was dialed in as he advanced to the title match 257-246 over Brooks, setting up a rematch against top-seeded Wesley Low Jr. Once again, as in the past three events, Wesley remained sharp and bowled his way to a 234-214 win and his fourth consecutive JAT Open title. Wesley remains undefeated this season going four-for-four and winning his 7th JAT title. Congratulations! We arrived to find newly resurfaced approaches and hot coffee. Special thanks to John and staff for having team rosters entered and everything ready to bowl. Super hot shot of the day was Kim Cato with 225 and 234 games to post a league season high 627 series. Additional bowlers mastering the lanes were Ella Wilson with a 215 game and 543 series, Dee Phipps with a 202 game and 541 series. Also posting a 541 series was Mary Dixon. Other high performers were Kathy Parish with 539 series, Ora McCormick with 523, Mary Smyth with 518, Loreda Silk with 215/514, Cil Moons with 512, Vi Wilson at 506, Joy Bennett at 502, Pearlie Watts at 501, and Linda Kenny with 500. First position round was very exciting with several team standing shifts and position ties. Cal 1 remained in first place with 21 wins, closely followed by Westminister 2 at 20 wins.
