Ski & Snowboard Australia Limited (SSA) Selection Policy and Criteria Discipline: Event: Level: Snowboard Parallel Slalom/Giant Slalom (Alpine) World Cup World Championships Junior World Championships Gender: Male/ Female 1. Objective To select athletes capable of producing the best possible performances at the FIS World Cup/ World Championship level. By meeting the SSA Selection Policy and Criteria for World Cup and World Championships it does not automatically qualify an athlete for support and/or consideration for selection, to an AWE Athlete Category, Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) Athlete Contract or scholarship opportunity offered via the SIS/SAS network. 2. Selection Committee 2.1 The selection committee will comprise the National Head Coach and two other members as appointed by the relevant discipline committee. Where an Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) program is in place, the National Head Coach position on the committee will be filled by the OWIA Head Program or Technical coach. 2.2 A majority decision of the selection committee is required. The decision of the selection committee shall be final. Reasons shall not be given for any selection or other decision of the selection committee unless requested by non-selected athlete(s). The selection committee may meet with non-selected athletes to explain their decision. 2.3 Unless expressly requested by the selection committee, athletes have no right to make submissions or representations to, or appear before, the selection committee. Any right or claim to natural justice in this regard is expressly excluded, such right being preserved in the appeal process available from the SSA website. 2.4 Selections made by the relevant discipline committee are subject to final approval by the SSA Board. 3. Eligibility 3.1 To be eligible for selection athletes must: 3.1.1 Be a current member of SSA; 3.1.2 Hold an SSA license to compete at the relevant level; 1 P age
3.1.3 Have met the minimum FIS points required for participation at the selected level; and, 3.1.4 Have appropriate competition insurance (as per FIS Rule 212.4) if competing internationally. 4. Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) 4.1 SSA has an MOU with the OWIA transferring certain SSA rights in respect to National Team operations and selection to the OWIA. 4.2 Where OWIA operates a sport program, SSA affords priority World Cup, World Championship and Junior World Championship selections for that event to the OWIA. 4.3 The OWIA provides SSA with its selection recommendations by the date of team entry. These selection recommendations are not limited to OWIA performance contract holders only and can include identified SIS/SAS scholarship holders ie. NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) and Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) Scholarship Athletes 4.4 If in any event where an OWIA program operates and all available quota places for selection are not filled; then the remaining spots will be available for athletes to fill according to the SSA Selection Policy and Criteria for World Cup and World Championships as published. 4.5 The selection recommendations of OWIA, NSWIS and VIS scholarship athletes are based on a predetermined set of program goals, program and individual athlete key performance indicators (KPI s) and individual athlete performance plans (IPP). 5. Selection Criteria 5.1 SSA may select athletes to the maximum number of places as allowed by FIS quota for World Cup/World Championship participation according to this criterion. 5.2 This criterion is applied to each event, with an event defined as each discipline per gender. i.e women s PGS, men s PSL 5.3 Where athletes achieve identical results, priority is given to the highest ranked athlete according to the most recent FIS Points List for PGS & PSL. 6. Use of Snowboarding Points Lists for selection FIS Cup Ranking Lists The FIS cup ranking lists for World Cup/Europa Cup and NorAms will be used to select athletes for the purposes of this criterion (where applicable) in PGS & PSL FIS cup ranking lists can be found on the FIS website at FIS Snowboard Cup Standings FIS Points Lists The FIS points list applicable at the time of each selection priority checklist will be used to rank athletes within each Tier level. 7. Selection Priority 2 P age
7.1 Selection priority will be made according to tiered performance levels as outlined in the Snowboard Selection Priority and Ranking list table (Attachment A) and below. 7.1.1 Tiers 1,2,3 - World Cup, World Championship & Junior World Selection Criteria 7.1.2 Tier 4 - Junior World Championship Selection Criteria 7.2 The Snowboard Selection Priority and Ranking list will be reviewed by the SSA Snowboard Committee prior to Checkpoint #1 each year. 7.3 Athletes within each Tier level will be ranked according to the relevant Snowboarding points list as outlined in Section 6. 7.4 Tier 1 athletes can only drop down one level (to Tier 2) the following year in the event that neither the Tier 1 or Tier 2 performance standards have been met in a particular season. This takes into account injury or extended layoff. The SSA Selection committee may exercise discretionary selection for the final quota spot in each event. 7.5 Where personal quota spots are awarded through the ANC series, athletes must meet the Tier 3 selection criteria to be eligible to use their personal quota spot allocated by FIS. 7.6 NSWIS Scholarship holders may be selected for World Cup & WSC starts by the Snowboard Selection Committee under the following conditions: a. Compliance with Minimum Physical Testing standards b. Coach Evaluation for Development Opportunity c. The athlete selection assessment will be on a case-by-case basis 8. Discretionary Selection 8.1 The SSA Selection committee in forming its opinion will take into consideration the athlete s: Opportunities previously provided in relationship to results; Attitude and commitment; Outstanding results; Physical fitness level; Injuries; Individual Performance Plan; and, Coaches recommendation. 8.2 In the event that the SSA Selection Committee chooses not to exercise a discretionary selection, the remaining quota spot may be filled in accordance with Section 7. 9. Selection Priority Checkpoints 9.1 The selection priority list will be recalculated 3 times per calendar year being: 9.1.1 Checkpoint #1-1 May Results considered from the prior international and domestic seasons 9.1.2 Checkpoint #2-1 November Results considered since Checkpoint #1 9.1.3 Checkpoint #3-1 February* Results considered since Checkpoint #2 3 P age
* Checkpoint #3 date may change based on the publication of the FIS/ WST calendar. Notification of any change in date will be posted on the SSA website. 9.2 Athletes selected under Tier 3 at Checkpoint #1 or #2 will remain on the priority list and eligible to compete at World Cup/World Championships for the remainder of the current World Cup season even if their point level drops below that required for ongoing Tier 3 eligibility. Priority in terms of selection we be determined by the ranking list. 9.3 There will be no change to the selection priority of athletes for World Cup/World Championship events as determined by section 7 between checkpoints. 10. Notification 11. Injury 10.1 Athletes eligible for selection are required to notify the SSA office of their desire to be considered for selection as per the published Expression of Interest (EOI) process. 10.2 Where athletes are members of a sanctioned program or ratified SSA team, such notification can be made via a coach or team representative. 10.3 Subject to any constraints which may be imposed on SSA by third parties, athletes selected will be notified of their selection as soon as reasonably practicable after their individual selection or finalisation of the relevant squad, team or position. 11.1 It is the responsibility of the athlete to notify the SSA office at the time of injury in order to have their FIS points frozen. The application form is available on the SSA website. 11.2 The freezing of FIS points provides adequate allowance for injury. 12. Extenuating Circumstances 12.1 In considering the selection criteria, the selection committee may in their discretion give weight to extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances may include but are not limited to injury, personal bereavement, equipment failure and travel delays. 12.2 Athletes unable to compete at events, trials, training camps required under these criteria must notify the SSA of this fact and the reasons therefore at least five days prior to the commencement of the events, trials, training camps or other attendances required under this policy. 12.3 In the case of illness or injury, athletes may be required to undergo a medical examination by a doctor or doctors appointed by SSA. 12.4 In the case of bereavement, equipment failure, travel delays, or other extenuating circumstances, the selection committee will make a decision on a case by case basis. 13.
